A Thoroughbred (2nd)
“चतूहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो भद्रो अस्साजानीयो राजारहो होति राजभोग्गो, रञ्ञो अङ्गन्तेव सङ्खं गच्छति। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो भद्रो अस्साजानीयो वण्णसम्पन्नो च होति, बलसम्पन्नो च, जवसम्पन्नो च, आरोहपरिणाहसम्पन्नो च। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो भद्रो अस्साजानीयो राजारहो होति राजभोग्गो, रञ्ञो अङ्गन्तेव सङ्खं गच्छति।
“Catūhi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato rañño bhadro assājānīyo rājāraho hoti rājabhoggo, rañño aṅganteva saṅkhaṁ gacchati. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, bhikkhave, rañño bhadro assājānīyo vaṇṇasampanno ca hoti, balasampanno ca, javasampanno ca, ārohapariṇāhasampanno ca. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi aṅgehi samannāgato rañño bhadro assājānīyo rājāraho hoti rājabhoggo, rañño aṅganteva saṅkhaṁ gacchati.
“Bhikkhus, a fine royal thoroughbred with four factors is worthy of a king, fit to serve a king, and considered a factor of kingship. What four? It’s when a fine royal thoroughbred is beautiful, strong, fast, and well-proportioned. A fine royal thoroughbred with these four factors is worthy of a king. …
एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो होति …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्स। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु वण्णसम्पन्नो च होति, बलसम्पन्नो च, जवसम्पन्नो च, आरोहपरिणाहसम्पन्नो च।
Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vaṇṇasampanno ca hoti, balasampanno ca, javasampanno ca, ārohapariṇāhasampanno ca.
In the same way, a bhikkhu with four qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu is beautiful, strong, fast, and well proportioned.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु वण्णसम्पन्नो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सीलवा होति …पे… समादाय सिक्खति सिक्खापदेसु। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु वण्णसम्पन्नो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vaṇṇasampanno hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vaṇṇasampanno hoti.
And how is a bhikkhu beautiful? It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken. That’s how a bhikkhu is beautiful.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु बलसम्पन्नो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु आरद्धवीरियो विहरति अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय, कुसलानं धम्मानं उपसम्पदाय, थामवा दळ्हपरक्कमो अनिक्खित्तधुरो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु बलसम्पन्नो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu balasampanno hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āraddhavīriyo viharati akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ upasampadāya, thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu balasampanno hoti.
And how is a bhikkhu strong? It’s when a bhikkhu lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They are strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. That’s how a bhikkhu is strong.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु जवसम्पन्नो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु आसवानं खया …पे… सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु जवसम्पन्नो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu javasampanno hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu javasampanno hoti.
And how is a bhikkhu fast? It’s when a bhikkhu realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. That’s how a bhikkhu is fast.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु आरोहपरिणाहसम्पन्नो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु लाभी होति चीवरपिण्डपातसेनासनगिलानपच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारानं। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु आरोहपरिणाहसम्पन्नो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ārohapariṇāhasampanno hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu lābhī hoti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ārohapariṇāhasampanno hoti.
And how is a bhikkhu well proportioned? It’s when a bhikkhu receives robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. That’s how a bhikkhu is well proportioned.
इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो होति …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्सा”ति।
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā”ti.
A bhikkhu with these four qualities … is the supreme field of merit for the world.”
