अथ खो आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो येनायस्मा सारिपुत्तो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता सारिपुत्तेन सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो आयस्मन्तं सारिपुत्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā anuruddho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca:
Then Venerable Anuruddha went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him:
“इधाहं, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, दिब्बेन चक्खुना विसुद्धेन अतिक्कन्तमानुसकेन सहस्सं लोकं ओलोकेमि। आरद्धं खो पन मे वीरियं असल्लीनं, उपट्ठिता सति असम्मुट्ठा, पस्सद्धो कायो असारद्धो, समाहितं चित्तं एकग्गं। अथ च पन मे नानुपादाय आसवेहि चित्तं विमुच्चती”ति।
“idhāhaṁ, āvuso sāriputta, dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaṁ lokaṁ olokemi. Āraddhaṁ kho pana me vīriyaṁ asallīnaṁ, upaṭṭhitā sati asammuṭṭhā, passaddho kāyo asāraddho, samāhitaṁ cittaṁ ekaggaṁ. Atha ca pana me nānupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuccatī”ti.
“Here’s the thing, Friend Sāriputta. With clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, I survey the entire galaxy. My energy is roused up and unflagging, my mindfulness is established and lucid, my body is tranquil and undisturbed, and my mind is immersed in samādhi. But my mind is not freed from the defilements by not grasping.”
“यं खो ते, आवुसो अनुरुद्ध, एवं होति: ‘अहं दिब्बेन चक्खुना विसुद्धेन अतिक्कन्तमानुसकेन सहस्सं लोकं वोलोकेमीऽति, इदं ते मानस्मिं। यम्पि ते, आवुसो अनुरुद्ध, एवं होति: ‘आरद्धं खो पन मे वीरियं असल्लीनं, उपट्ठिता सति असम्मुट्ठा, पस्सद्धो कायो असारद्धो, समाहितं चित्तं एकग्गन्ऽति, इदं ते उद्धच्चस्मिं। यम्पि ते, आवुसो अनुरुद्ध, एवं होति: ‘अथ च पन मे नानुपादाय आसवेहि चित्तं विमुच्चतीऽति, इदं ते कुक्कुच्चस्मिं। साधु वतायस्मा अनुरुद्धो इमे तयो धम्मे पहाय, इमे तयो धम्मे अमनसिकरित्वा अमताय धातुया चित्तं उपसंहरतू”ति।
“Yaṁ kho te, āvuso anuruddha, evaṁ hoti: ‘ahaṁ dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaṁ lokaṁ volokemī’ti, idaṁ te mānasmiṁ. Yampi te, āvuso anuruddha, evaṁ hoti: ‘āraddhaṁ kho pana me vīriyaṁ asallīnaṁ, upaṭṭhitā sati asammuṭṭhā, passaddho kāyo asāraddho, samāhitaṁ cittaṁ ekaggan’ti, idaṁ te uddhaccasmiṁ. Yampi te, āvuso anuruddha, evaṁ hoti: ‘atha ca pana me nānupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuccatī’ti, idaṁ te kukkuccasmiṁ. Sādhu vatāyasmā anuruddho ime tayo dhamme pahāya, ime tayo dhamme amanasikaritvā amatāya dhātuyā cittaṁ upasaṁharatū”ti.
“Well, Friend Anuruddha, when you say: ‘With clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, I survey the entire galaxy,’ that’s your conceit. And when you say: ‘My energy is roused up and unflagging, my mindfulness is established and lucid, my body is tranquil and undisturbed, and my mind is immersed in samādhi,’ that’s your restlessness. And when you say: ‘But my mind is not freed from the defilements by not grasping,’ that’s your remorse. It would be good to give up these three things. Ignore them and apply your mind to the deathless.”
अथ खो आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो अपरेन समयेन इमे तयो धम्मे पहाय, इमे तयो धम्मे अमनसिकरित्वा अमताय धातुया चित्तं उपसंहरि। अथ खो आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो नचिरस्सेव—यस्सत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति, तदनुत्तरं—ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहासि।
Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho aparena samayena ime tayo dhamme pahāya, ime tayo dhamme amanasikaritvā amatāya dhātuyā cittaṁ upasaṁhari. Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.
After some time Anuruddha gave up these three things. Ignoring them, he applied his mind to the deathless. Then Anuruddha, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme culmination of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
“खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्ताया”ति अब्भञ्ञासि। अञ्ञतरो च पनायस्मा अनुरुद्धो अरहतं अहोसीति।
“Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro ca panāyasmā anuruddho arahataṁ ahosīti.
He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And Venerable Anuruddha became one of the perfected.
