The Simile of the Tree Trunk (2nd)
एकं समयं भगवा किमिलायं विहरति गङ्गाय नदिया तीरे। अद्दसा खो भगवा महन्तं दारुक्खन्धं गङ्गाय नदिया सोतेन वुय्हमानं। दिस्वान भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, अमुं महन्तं दारुक्खन्धं गङ्गाय नदिया सोतेन वुय्हमानन्”ति?
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kimilāyaṁ1 viharati gaṅgāya nadiyā tīre. Addasā kho bhagavā mahantaṁ dārukkhandhaṁ gaṅgāya nadiyā sotena vuyhamānaṁ. Disvāna bhikkhū āmantesi: “passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, amuṁ mahantaṁ dārukkhandhaṁ gaṅgāya nadiyā sotena vuyhamānan”ti?
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kimibilā on the bank of the Ganges river. Seeing a large tree trunk being carried along by the current, he addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, do you see that large tree trunk being carried along by the current of the Ganges river?”
“एवं, भन्ते” …पे… एवं वुत्ते, आयस्मा किमिलो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
“Evaṁ, bhante” …pe… evaṁ vutte, āyasmā kimilo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
“Yes, sir,” they replied. … When this was said, Venerable Kimbila said to the Buddha:
“किं नु खो, भन्ते, ओरिमं तीरं …पे…
“kiṁ nu kho, bhante, orimaṁ tīraṁ …pe…
“But sir, what’s the near shore and what’s the far shore? What’s sinking in the middle? What’s getting stranded on high ground? What’s getting taken by humans or non-humans? What’s getting caught up in a whirlpool? And what’s rotting away?” …
“कतमो च, किमिल, अन्तोपूतिभावो। इध, किमिल, भिक्खु अञ्ञतरं सङ्किलिट्ठं आपत्तिं आपन्नो होति यथारूपाय आपत्तिया न वुट्ठानं पञ्ञायति। अयं वुच्चति, किमिल, अन्तोपूतिभावो”ति।
“katamo ca, kimila, antopūtibhāvo. Idha, kimila, bhikkhu aññataraṁ saṅkiliṭṭhaṁ āpattiṁ āpanno hoti yathārūpāya āpattiyā na vuṭṭhānaṁ paññāyati. Ayaṁ vuccati, kimila, antopūtibhāvo”ti.
“And what, Kimbila, is rotting away? It’s when a bhikkhu has committed the kind of corrupt offense from which there is no rehabilitation. This is called ‘rotting away’.”
