Bad Conduct (2nd)
“पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आदीनवा दुच्चरिते। कतमे पञ्च? अत्तापि अत्तानं उपवदति; अनुविच्च विञ्ञू गरहन्ति; पापको कित्तिसद्दो अब्भुग्गच्छति; सद्धम्मा वुट्ठाति; असद्धम्मे पतिट्ठाति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आदीनवा दुच्चरिते।
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā duccarite. Katame pañca? Attāpi attānaṁ upavadati; anuvicca viññū garahanti; pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati; saddhammā vuṭṭhāti; asaddhamme patiṭṭhāti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā duccarite.
“Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks of bad conduct. What five? You blame yourself. After examination, sensible people criticize you. You get a bad reputation. You drift away from true teachings. You settle on untrue teachings. These are the five drawbacks of bad conduct.
पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आनिसंसा सुचरिते। कतमे पञ्च? अत्तापि अत्तानं न उपवदति; अनुविच्च विञ्ञू पसंसन्ति; कल्याणो कित्तिसद्दो अब्भुग्गच्छति; असद्धम्मा वुट्ठाति; सद्धम्मे पतिट्ठाति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आनिसंसा सुचरिते”ति।
Pañcime, bhikkhave, ānisaṁsā sucarite. Katame pañca? Attāpi attānaṁ na upavadati; anuvicca viññū pasaṁsanti; kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggacchati; asaddhammā vuṭṭhāti; saddhamme patiṭṭhāti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ānisaṁsā sucarite”ti.
There are these five benefits of good conduct. What five? You don’t blame yourself. After examination, sensible people praise you. You get a good reputation. You drift away from untrue teachings. You settle on true teachings. These are the five benefits of good conduct.”
