Three Trainings (2nd)
“तिस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, सिक्खा। कतमा तिस्सो? अधिसीलसिक्खा, अधिचित्तसिक्खा, अधिपञ्ञासिक्खा।
“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, sikkhā. Katamā tisso? Adhisīlasikkhā, adhicittasikkhā, adhipaññāsikkhā.
“Bhikkhus, these are the three trainings. What three? The training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, अधिसीलसिक्खा? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सीलवा होति …पे… समादाय सिक्खति सिक्खापदेसु। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अधिसीलसिक्खा।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, adhisīlasikkhā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhisīlasikkhā.
And what is the training in the higher ethics? It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken. This is called the training in the higher ethics.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, अधिचित्तसिक्खा? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु विविच्चेव कामेहि …पे… चतुत्थं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अधिचित्तसिक्खा।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, adhicittasikkhā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi …pe… catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhicittasikkhā.
And what is the training in the higher mind? It’s when a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna … second jhāna … third jhāna … fourth jhāna. This is called the training in the higher mind.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, अधिपञ्ञासिक्खा? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अधिपञ्ञासिक्खा। इमा खो, भिक्खवे, तिस्सो सिक्खाति।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, adhipaññāsikkhā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhipaññāsikkhā. Imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso sikkhāti.
And what is the training in the higher wisdom? It’s when a bhikkhu realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. This is called the training in the higher wisdom. These are the three trainings.
अधिसीलं अधिचित्तं, अधिपञ्ञञ्च वीरियवा; थामवा धितिमा झायी, सतो गुत्तिन्द्रियो चरे।
Adhisīlaṁ adhicittaṁ, adhipaññañca vīriyavā; Thāmavā dhitimā jhāyī, sato guttindriyo1 care.
The higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom should be practiced by those energetic, steadfast, and resolute, practicing absorption, mindful, with guarded senses.
यथा पुरे तथा पच्छा, यथा पच्छा तथा पुरे; यथा अधो तथा उद्धं, यथा उद्धं तथा अधो।
Yathā pure tathā pacchā, yathā pacchā tathā pure; Yathā adho tathā uddhaṁ, yathā uddhaṁ tathā adho.
As before, so after; as after, so before. As below, so above; as above, so below.
यथा दिवा तथा रत्तिं, यथा रत्तिं तथा दिवा; अभिभुय्य दिसा सब्बा, अप्पमाणसमाधिना।
Yathā divā tathā rattiṁ, yathā rattiṁ tathā divā; Abhibhuyya disā sabbā, appamāṇasamādhinā.
As by day, so by night; as by night, so by day. Having mastered every direction with limitless immersion,
तमाहु सेखं पटिपदं, अथो संसुद्धचारियं; तमाहु लोके सम्बुद्धं, धीरं पटिपदन्तगुं।
Tamāhu sekhaṁ paṭipadaṁ, atho saṁsuddhacāriyaṁ; Tamāhu loke sambuddhaṁ, dhīraṁ paṭipadantaguṁ.
they call them a ‘trainee on the path’, and ‘one living a pure life’. But a wise one who has gone to the end of the path they call a ‘Buddha’ in the world.
विञ्ञाणस्स निरोधेन, तण्हाक्खयविमुत्तिनो; पज्जोतस्सेव निब्बानं, विमोक्खो होति चेतसो”ति।
Viññāṇassa nirodhena, taṇhākkhayavimuttino; Pajjotasseva nibbānaṁ, vimokkho hoti cetaso”ti.
With the cessation of consciousness, freed by the ending of craving, the liberation of their heart is like a lamp going out.”
