7.2 magnitude earthquake hits Alaska

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake triggered a brief tsunami warning in southern Alaska, but the warning was lifted about an hour later.

The quake was felt in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska Peninsula and Cook Inlet regions, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

The US Geological Survey posted on social media that the quake struck 106 kilometers (65.8 miles) south of Sand Point, Alaska, at 10:48 p.m. Saturday.

There were about eight aftershocks in the same area of Alaska, including one with a magnitude of 5.0 three minutes after the initial quake, KTUU-TV reported.
