    Sick

    एकं समयं भगवा वेसालियं विहरति महावने कूटागारसालायं। अथ खो भगवा सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येन गिलानसाला तेनुपसङ्कमि। अद्दसा खो भगवा अञ्ञतरं भिक्खुं दुब्बलं गिलानकं; दिस्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। निसज्ज खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि:

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ. Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena gilānasālā tenupasaṅkami. Addasā kho bhagavā aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ dubbalaṁ gilānakaṁ; disvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat and went to the infirmary, where he saw a certain bhikkhu who was weak and sick. He sat down on the seat spread out, and addressed the bhikkhus:

    “यं किञ्चि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुं दुब्बलं गिलानकं पञ्च धम्मा न विजहन्ति, तस्सेतं पाटिकङ्खं: ‘नचिरस्सेव आसवानं खया अनासवं चेतोविमुत्तिं पञ्ञाविमुत्तिं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरिस्सतीऽति।

    “Yaṁ kiñci, bhikkhave, bhikkhuṁ dubbalaṁ gilānakaṁ pañca dhammā na vijahanti, tassetaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ: ‘nacirasseva āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissatī’ti.

    “Bhikkhus, if a weak and sick bhikkhu does not neglect five things, it can be expected that they will soon realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

    कतमे पञ्च? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु असुभानुपस्सी काये विहरति, आहारे पटिकूलसञ्ञी, सब्बलोके अनभिरतसञ्ञी, सब्बसङ्खारेसु अनिच्चानुपस्सी, मरणसञ्ञा खो पनस्स अज्झत्तं सूपट्ठिता होति। यं किञ्चि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुं दुब्बलं गिलानकं इमे पञ्च धम्मा न विजहन्ति, तस्सेतं पाटिकङ्खं: ‘नचिरस्सेव आसवानं खया …पे… सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरिस्सतीऽ”ति।

    Katame pañca? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asubhānupassī kāye viharati, āhāre paṭikūlasaññī, sabbaloke anabhiratasaññī, sabbasaṅkhāresu aniccānupassī, maraṇasaññā kho panassa ajjhattaṁ sūpaṭṭhitā hoti. Yaṁ kiñci, bhikkhave, bhikkhuṁ dubbalaṁ gilānakaṁ ime pañca dhammā na vijahanti, tassetaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ: ‘nacirasseva āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissatī’”ti.

    What five? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates observing the ugliness of the body, perceives the repulsiveness of food, perceives dissatisfaction with the whole world, observes the impermanence of all conditions, and has well established the perception of their own death. If a weak and sick bhikkhu does not neglect these five things, it can be expected that they will soon realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.”
