    Hatthakasutta

    With Hatthaka

    एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    अथ खो हत्थको देवपुत्तो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णो केवलकप्पं जेतवनं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा: “भगवतो पुरतो ठस्सामी”ति ओसीदतिमेव संसीदतिमेव, न सक्कोति सण्ठातुं। सेय्यथापि नाम सप्पि वा तेलं वा वालुकाय आसित्तं ओसीदतिमेव संसीदतिमेव, न सण्ठाति; एवमेवं हत्थको देवपुत्तो: “भगवतो पुरतो ठस्सामी”ति ओसीदतिमेव संसीदतिमेव, न सक्कोति सण्ठातुं।

    Atha kho hatthako devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā: “bhagavato purato ṭhassāmī”ti osīdatimeva saṁsīdatimeva, na sakkoti saṇṭhātuṁ. Seyyathāpi nāma sappi vā telaṁ vā vālukāya āsittaṁ osīdatimeva saṁsīdatimeva, na saṇṭhāti; evamevaṁ hatthako devaputto: “bhagavato purato ṭhassāmī”ti osīdatimeva saṁsīdatimeva, na sakkoti saṇṭhātuṁ.

    Then, late at night, the glorious god Hatthaka, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha. Thinking, “I will stand before the Buddha,” he sank and melted down, and wasn’t able to stay still. It’s like when ghee or oil is poured on sand, it sinks and melts down, and can’t remain stable.

    अथ खो भगवा हत्थकं देवपुत्तं एतदवोच: “ओळारिकं, हत्थक, अत्तभावं अभिनिम्मिनाही”ति।

    Atha kho bhagavā hatthakaṁ devaputtaṁ etadavoca: “oḷārikaṁ, hatthaka, attabhāvaṁ abhinimmināhī”ti.

    Then the Buddha said to Hatthaka, “Hatthaka, manifest in a solid life-form.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति, खो हत्थको देवपुत्तो भगवतो पटिस्सुत्वा ओळारिकं अत्तभावं अभिनिम्मिनित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठासि।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti, kho hatthako devaputto bhagavato paṭissutvā oḷārikaṁ attabhāvaṁ abhinimminitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

    “Yes, sir,” replied Hatthaka. He manifested in a solid life-form, bowed to the Buddha, and stood to one side.

    एकमन्तं ठितं खो हत्थकं देवपुत्तं भगवा एतदवोच: “ये ते, हत्थक, धम्मा पुब्बे मनुस्सभूतस्स पवत्तिनो अहेसुं, अपि नु ते ते धम्मा एतरहि पवत्तिनो”ति?

    Ekamantaṁ ṭhitaṁ kho hatthakaṁ devaputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “Ye te, hatthaka, dhammā pubbe manussabhūtassa pavattino ahesuṁ, api nu te te dhammā etarahi pavattino”ti?

    The Buddha said to him, “Hatthaka, I wonder whether you still rehearse now the teachings that you rehearsed when you were a human being?”

    “ये च मे, भन्ते, धम्मा पुब्बे मनुस्सभूतस्स पवत्तिनो अहेसुं, ते च मे धम्मा एतरहि पवत्तिनो; ये च मे, भन्ते, धम्मा पुब्बे मनुस्सभूतस्स नप्पवत्तिनो अहेसुं, ते च मे धम्मा एतरहि पवत्तिनो।

    “Ye ca me, bhante, dhammā pubbe manussabhūtassa pavattino ahesuṁ, te ca me dhammā etarahi pavattino; ye ca me, bhante, dhammā pubbe manussabhūtassa nappavattino ahesuṁ, te ca me dhammā etarahi pavattino.

    “I still rehearse now the teachings that I rehearsed as a human being. And I also rehearse teachings that I didn’t rehearse as a human being.

    सेय्यथापि, भन्ते, भगवा एतरहि आकिण्णो विहरति भिक्खूहि भिक्खुनीहि उपासकेहि उपासिकाहि राजूहि राजमहामत्तेहि तित्थियेहि तित्थियसावकेहि; एवमेवं खो अहं, भन्ते, आकिण्णो विहरामि देवपुत्तेहि। दूरतोपि, भन्ते, देवपुत्ता आगच्छन्ति हत्थकस्स देवपुत्तस्स सन्तिके ‘धम्मं सोस्सामाऽति।

    Seyyathāpi, bhante, bhagavā etarahi ākiṇṇo viharati bhikkhūhi bhikkhunīhi upāsakehi upāsikāhi rājūhi rājamahāmattehi titthiyehi titthiyasāvakehi; evamevaṁ kho ahaṁ, bhante, ākiṇṇo viharāmi devaputtehi. Dūratopi, bhante, devaputtā āgacchanti hatthakassa devaputtassa santike ‘dhammaṁ sossāmā’ti.

    Just as the Buddha these days lives crowded by monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen; by rulers and their ministers, and monastics of other religions and their disciples, so I live crowded by the gods. The gods come from far away, thinking, ‘We’ll hear the teaching in the presence of Hatthaka.’

    तिण्णाहं, भन्ते, धम्मानं अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो कालङ्कतो। कतमेसं तिण्णं? भगवतो अहं, भन्ते, दस्सनस्स अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो कालङ्कतो; सद्धम्मसवनस्साहं, भन्ते, अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो कालङ्कतो; सङ्घस्साहं, भन्ते, उपट्ठानस्स अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो कालङ्कतो। इमेसं खो अहं, भन्ते, तिण्णं धम्मानं अतित्तो अप्पटिवानो कालङ्कतोति।

    Tiṇṇāhaṁ, bhante, dhammānaṁ atitto appaṭivāno kālaṅkato. Katamesaṁ tiṇṇaṁ? Bhagavato ahaṁ, bhante, dassanassa atitto appaṭivāno kālaṅkato; saddhammasavanassāhaṁ, bhante, atitto appaṭivāno kālaṅkato; saṅghassāhaṁ, bhante, upaṭṭhānassa atitto appaṭivāno kālaṅkato. Imesaṁ kho ahaṁ, bhante, tiṇṇaṁ dhammānaṁ atitto appaṭivāno kālaṅkatoti.

    Sir, I passed away without getting enough of three things. What three? Seeing the Buddha; hearing the true teaching; and serving the Saṅgha. I passed away without getting enough of these three things.

    नाहं भगवतो दस्सनस्स, तित्तिमज्झगा कुदाचनं; सङ्घस्स उपट्ठानस्स, सद्धम्मसवनस्स च।

    Nāhaṁ bhagavato1 dassanassa, Tittimajjhagā2 kudācanaṁ; Saṅghassa upaṭṭhānassa, Saddhammasavanassa ca.

    I could never get enough of seeing the Buddha, serving the Saṅgha, or hearing the teaching.

    अधिसीलं सिक्खमानो, सद्धम्मसवने रतो; तिण्णं धम्मानं अतित्तो, हत्थको अविहं गतो”ति।

    Adhisīlaṁ sikkhamāno, saddhammasavane rato; Tiṇṇaṁ dhammānaṁ atitto, hatthako avihaṁ gato”ti.

    Training in the higher ethics, loving to hear the true teaching, Hatthaka has gone to the Aviha realm without getting enough of these three things.”

    पञ्चमं।
