This species is motile by a single polar flagellum, catalase positive, and hydrolyzes indoxyl acetate and arylsulfatase but not hippurate. H. fennelliae is part of the normal flora of human and animal intestines and is an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients. (NCI Thesaurus)
