    A substance that stimulates or suppresses the immune system and may help the body fight cancer, infection, or other diseases. Specific immunomodulating agents, such as monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, and vaccines, affect specific parts of the immune system. Nonspecific immunomodulating agents, such as BCG and levamisole, affect the immune system in a general way. (NCI Dictionary)

    Substances that enhance, restore or alter the host's immune system. Immunomodulating agents can be preventive or therapeutic and can suppress or activate the immune system, either directly or indirectly. For cancer treatment purposes, immunomodulating agents can be used to prevent or inhibit tumorigenesis. Examples of immunomodulators include, but are not limited to, cytokines, monoclonal antibodies and vaccines. (NCI Thesaurus)
