A class of interferon (leukocyte interferon) produced predominantly by B lymphocytes. Located in a cluster on 9p22 there are at least 13 functional genes and 1 pseudogene. (NCI Thesaurus)
Definition 2
One of the type I interferons (INTERFERON TYPE I) produced by peripheral blood leukocytes or lymphoblastoid cells when exposed to live or inactivated virus, double-stranded RNA, or bacterial products. It is the major interferon produced by virus-induced leukocyte cultures and, in addition to its pronounced antiviral activity, it causes activation of NK cells. (NLM, Medical Subject Headings)
