    At Isigili

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते। तत्र खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “भिक्खवो”ति।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati isigilismiṁ pabbate. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “bhikkhavo”ti.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Isigili Mountain. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”

    “भदन्ते”ति ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, एतं वेभारं पब्बतन्”ति?

    “Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ vebhāraṁ pabbatan”ti?

    “Bhikkhus, do you see that Mount Vebhāra?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “एतस्सपि खो, भिक्खवे, वेभारस्स पब्बतस्स अञ्ञाव समञ्ञा अहोसि अञ्ञा पञ्ञत्ति। पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, एतं पण्डवं पब्बतन्”ति?

    “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, vebhārassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ paṇḍavaṁ pabbatan”ti?

    “It used to have a different label and description. Do you see that Mount Paṇḍava?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “एतस्सपि खो, भिक्खवे, पण्डवस्स पब्बतस्स अञ्ञाव समञ्ञा अहोसि अञ्ञा पञ्ञत्ति। पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, एतं वेपुल्लं पब्बतन्”ति?

    “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, paṇḍavassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ vepullaṁ pabbatan”ti?

    “It too used to have a different label and description. Do you see that Mount Vepulla?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “एतस्सपि खो, भिक्खवे, वेपुल्लस्स पब्बतस्स अञ्ञाव समञ्ञा अहोसि अञ्ञा पञ्ञत्ति। पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, एतं गिज्झकूटं पब्बतन्”ति?

    “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, vepullassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaṁ gijjhakūṭaṁ pabbatan”ti?

    “It too used to have a different label and description. Do you see that Mount Vulture’s Peak?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “एतस्सपि खो, भिक्खवे, गिज्झकूटस्स पब्बतस्स अञ्ञाव समञ्ञा अहोसि अञ्ञा पञ्ञत्ति। पस्सथ नो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, इमं इसिगिलिं पब्बतन्”ति?

    “Etassapi kho, bhikkhave, gijjhakūṭassa pabbatassa aññāva samaññā ahosi aññā paññatti. Passatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, imaṁ isigiliṁ pabbatan”ti?

    “It too used to have a different label and description. Do you see that Mount Isigili?”

    “एवं, भन्ते”।

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “इमस्स खो पन, भिक्खवे, इसिगिलिस्स पब्बतस्स एसाव समञ्ञा अहोसि एसा पञ्ञत्ति।

    “Imassa kho pana, bhikkhave, isigilissa pabbatassa esāva samaññā ahosi esā paññatti.

    “It used to have exactly the same label and description.

    भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, पञ्च पच्चेकबुद्धसतानि इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासिनो अहेसुं। ते इमं पब्बतं पविसन्ता दिस्सन्ति, पविट्ठा न दिस्सन्ति। तमेनं मनुस्सा दिस्वा एवमाहंसु: ‘अयं पब्बतो इमे इसी गिलतीऽति; ‘इसिगिलि इसिगिलिऽ त्वेव समञ्ञा उदपादि।

    Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, pañca paccekabuddhasatāni imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsino ahesuṁ. Te imaṁ pabbataṁ pavisantā dissanti, paviṭṭhā na dissanti. Tamenaṁ manussā disvā evamāhaṁsu: ‘ayaṁ pabbato ime isī1 gilatī’ti; ‘isigili isigili’ tveva samaññā udapādi.

    Once upon a time, five hundred independent Buddhas dwelt for a long time on this Isigili. They were seen entering the mountain, but after entering were seen no more. When people noticed this they said: ‘That mountain swallows these seers!’ That’s how it came to be known as Isigili.

    आचिक्खिस्सामि, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकबुद्धानं नामानि; कित्तयिस्सामि, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकबुद्धानं नामानि; देसेस्सामि, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकबुद्धानं नामानि। तं सुणाथ, साधुकं मनसि करोथ, भासिस्सामी”ति।

    Ācikkhissāmi, bhikkhave, paccekabuddhānaṁ nāmāni; kittayissāmi, bhikkhave, paccekabuddhānaṁ nāmāni; desessāmi, bhikkhave, paccekabuddhānaṁ nāmāni. Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

    I shall declare the names of the independent Buddhas; I shall extol the names of the independent Buddhas; I shall teach the names of the independent Buddhas. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “अरिट्ठो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; उपरिट्ठो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; तगरसिखी नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; यसस्सी नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; सुदस्सनो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; पियदस्सी नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; गन्धारो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; पिण्डोलो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; उपासभो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; नीतो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; तथो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि, सुतवा नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि; भावितत्तो नाम, भिक्खवे, पच्चेकसम्बुद्धो इमस्मिं इसिगिलिस्मिं पब्बते चिरनिवासी अहोसि।

    “Ariṭṭho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; upariṭṭho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; tagarasikhī2 nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; yasassī nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; sudassano nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; piyadassī nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; gandhāro nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; piṇḍolo nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; upāsabho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; nīto nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; tatho nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi, sutavā nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi; bhāvitatto nāma, bhikkhave, paccekasambuddho imasmiṁ isigilismiṁ pabbate ciranivāsī ahosi.

    “The independent Buddhas who dwelt for a long time on this Isigili were named Ariṭṭha, Upariṭṭha, Tagarasikhī, Yasassin, Sudassana, Piyadassin, Gandhāra, Piṇḍola, Upāsabha, Nītha, Tatha, Sutavā, and Bhāvitatta.

    ये सत्तसारा अनीघा निरासा, पच्चेकमेवज्झगमंसु बोधिं; तेसं विसल्लान नरुत्तमानं, नामानि मे कित्तयतो सुणाथ।

    Ye sattasārā anīghā nirāsā, Paccekamevajjhagamaṁsu bodhiṁ; Tesaṁ visallāna naruttamānaṁ, Nāmāni me kittayato suṇātha.

    Those saintly beings, untroubled, with no need for hope, who each achieved awakening independently; hear me extol their names, the supreme persons, free of thorns.

    अरिट्ठो उपरिट्ठो तगरसिखी यसस्सी, सुदस्सनो पियदस्सी च सुसम्बुद्धो; गन्धारो पिण्डोलो उपासभो च, नीतो तथो सुतवा भावितत्तो।

    Ariṭṭho upariṭṭho tagarasikhī yasassī, Sudassano piyadassī ca susambuddho; Gandhāro piṇḍolo upāsabho ca, Nīto tatho sutavā bhāvitatto.

    Ariṭṭha, Upariṭṭha, Tagarasikhī, Yasassin, Sudassana, and Piyadassin the awakened; Gandhāra, Piṇḍola, and Upāsabha, Nītha, Tatha, Sutavā, and Bhāvitatta.

    सुम्भो सुभो मतुलो अट्ठमो च, अथस्सुमेघो अनीघो सुदाठो; पच्चेकबुद्धा भवनेत्तिखीणा, हिङ्गू च हिङ्गो च महानुभावा।

    Sumbho subho matulo3 aṭṭhamo ca, Athassumegho4 anīgho sudāṭho; Paccekabuddhā bhavanettikhīṇā, Hiṅgū ca hiṅgo ca mahānubhāvā.

    Sumbha, Subha, Methula, and Aṭṭhama, and Assumegha, Anīgha, and Sudāṭha, independent Buddhas, enders of the conduit to rebirth. Hiṅgū, and Hiṅga the mighty.

    द्वे जालिनो मुनिनो अट्ठको च, अथ कोसल्लो बुद्धो अथो सुबाहु; उपनेमिसो नेमिसो सन्तचित्तो, सच्चो तथो विरजो पण्डितो च।

    Dve jālino munino aṭṭhako ca, Atha kosallo buddho atho subāhu; Upanemiso nemiso santacitto, Sacco tatho virajo paṇḍito ca.

    Two sages named Jāli, and Aṭṭhaka. Then the Buddha Kosala and Subāhu; Upanemi, Nemi, and Santacitta, right and true, stainless and astute.

    काळूपकाळा विजितो जितो च, अङ्गो च पङ्गो च गुत्तिजितो च; पस्सि जहि उपधिदुक्खमूलं, अपराजितो मारबलं अजेसि।

    Kāḷūpakāḷā vijito jito ca, Aṅgo ca paṅgo ca guttijito5 ca; Passi jahi upadhidukkhamūlaṁ, Aparājito mārabalaṁ ajesi.

    Kāḷa and Upakāḷa, Vijita and Jita, Aṅga and Paṅga, and Guttijita too; Passin gave up attachment, suffering’s root, while Aparājita defeated Māra’s power.

    सत्था पवत्ता सरभङ्गो लोमहंसो, उच्चङ्गमायो असितो अनासवो; मनोमयो मानच्छिदो च बन्धुमा, तदाधिमुत्तो विमलो च केतुमा।

    Satthā pavattā sarabhaṅgo lomahaṁso, Uccaṅgamāyo asito anāsavo; Manomayo mānacchido ca bandhumā, Tadādhimutto vimalo ca ketumā.

    Satthar, Pavattar, Sarabhaṅga, Lomahaṁsa, Uccaṅgamāya, Asita, Anāsava, Manomaya, and Bandhumant the cutter of conceit, and Tadādhimutta the immaculate and resplendent.

    केतुम्भरागो च मातङ्गो अरियो, अथच्चुतो अच्चुतगामब्यामको; सुमङ्गलो दब्बिलो सुपतिट्ठितो, असय्हो खेमाभिरतो च सोरतो।

    Ketumbharāgo ca mātaṅgo ariyo, Athaccuto accutagāmabyāmako; Sumaṅgalo dabbilo supatiṭṭhito, Asayho khemābhirato ca sorato.

    Ketumbarāga, Mātaṅga, and Ariya, then Accuta, Accutagāma, and Byāmaka, Sumaṅgala, Dabbila, Supatiṭṭhita, Asayha, Khemābhirata, and Sorata.

    दुरन्नयो सङ्घो अथोपि उज्जयो, अपरो मुनि सय्हो अनोमनिक्कमो; आनन्दो नन्दो उपनन्दो द्वादस, भारद्वाजो अन्तिमदेहधारी।

    Durannayo saṅgho athopi ujjayo, Aparo muni sayho anomanikkamo; Ānando nando upanando dvādasa, Bhāradvājo antimadehadhārī.

    Durannaya, Saṅgha, and also Ujjaya, another sage, Sayha of peerless effort. There are twelve Ānandas, Nandas, and Upanandas, and Bhāradvāja, bearing his final body.

    बोधि महानामो अथोपि उत्तरो, केसी सिखी सुन्दरो द्वारभाजो; तिस्सूपतिस्सा भवबन्धनच्छिदा, उपसिखि तण्हच्छिदो च सिखरि।

    Bodhi mahānāmo athopi uttaro, Kesī sikhī sundaro dvārabhājo; Tissūpatissā bhavabandhanacchidā, Upasikhi taṇhacchido ca sikhari.

    Bodhi, also Mahānāma the supreme, Kesī, Sikhī, Sundara, and Bhāradvāja, Tissa and Upatissa, who’ve both cut the bonds to rebirth, Upasīdarin and Sīdarin, who’ve both cut off craving.

    बुद्धो अहु मङ्गलो वीतरागो, उसभच्छिदा जालिनिं दुक्खमूलं; सन्तं पदं अज्झगमोपनीतो, उपोसथो सुन्दरो सच्चनामो।

    Buddho ahu maṅgalo vītarāgo, Usabhacchidā jāliniṁ dukkhamūlaṁ; Santaṁ padaṁ ajjhagamopanīto, Uposatho sundaro saccanāmo.

    Maṅgala was awakened, free of greed, Usabha cut the net, the root of suffering, Upanīta who attained the state of peace, Uposatha, Sundara, and Saccanāma.

    जेतो जयन्तो पदुमो उप्पलो च, पदुमुत्तरो रक्खितो पब्बतो च; मानत्थद्धो सोभितो वीतरागो, कण्हो च बुद्धो सुविमुत्तचित्तो।

    Jeto jayanto padumo uppalo ca, Padumuttaro rakkhito pabbato ca; Mānatthaddho sobhito vītarāgo, Kaṇho ca buddho suvimuttacitto.

    Jeta, Jayanta, Paduma, and Uppala; Padumuttara, Rakkhita, and Pabbata, Mānatthaddha, beautiful and free of greed, and the Buddha Kaṇha, his mind well freed.

    एते च अञ्ञे च महानुभावा, पच्चेकबुद्धा भवनेत्तिखीणा; ते सब्बसङ्गातिगते महेसी, परिनिब्बुते वन्दथ अप्पमेय्ये”ति।

    Ete ca aññe ca mahānubhāvā, Paccekabuddhā bhavanettikhīṇā; Te sabbasaṅgātigate mahesī, Parinibbute vandatha appameyye”ti.

    These and other mighty ones awakened for themselves, enders of the conduit to rebirth—honor these great seers who have slipped all chains, fully extinguished, limitless.”

    इसिगिलिसुत्तं निट्ठितं छट्ठं।

    Isigilisuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ chaṭṭhaṁ.
