    अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो अनाथपिण्डिकं गहपतिं भगवा एतदवोच:

    Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

    “पञ्चिमे, गहपति, धम्मा इट्ठा कन्ता मनापा दुल्लभा लोकस्मिं। कतमे पञ्च? आयु, गहपति, इट्ठो कन्तो मनापो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं; वण्णो इट्ठो कन्तो मनापो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं; सुखं इट्ठं कन्तं मनापं दुल्लभं लोकस्मिं; यसो इट्ठो कन्तो मनापो दुल्लभो लोकस्मिं; सग्गा इट्ठा कन्ता मनापा दुल्लभा लोकस्मिं। इमे खो, गहपति, पञ्च धम्मा इट्ठा कन्ता मनापा दुल्लभा लोकस्मिं।

    “Pañcime, gahapati, dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. Katame pañca? Āyu, gahapati, iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ; vaṇṇo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ; sukhaṁ iṭṭhaṁ kantaṁ manāpaṁ dullabhaṁ lokasmiṁ; yaso iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ; saggā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. Ime kho, gahapati, pañca dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ.

    “Householder, these five things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable are hard to get in the world. What five? Long life, beauty, happiness, fame, and heaven. These are the five things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.

    इमेसं खो, गहपति, पञ्चन्नं धम्मानं इट्ठानं कन्तानं मनापानं दुल्लभानं लोकस्मिं न आयाचनहेतु वा पत्थनाहेतु वा पटिलाभं वदामि। इमेसं खो, गहपति, पञ्चन्नं धम्मानं इट्ठानं कन्तानं मनापानं दुल्लभानं लोकस्मिं आयाचनहेतु वा पत्थनाहेतु वा पटिलाभो अभविस्स, को इध केन हायेथ?

    Imesaṁ kho, gahapati, pañcannaṁ dhammānaṁ iṭṭhānaṁ kantānaṁ manāpānaṁ dullabhānaṁ lokasmiṁ na āyācanahetu vā patthanāhetu vā1 paṭilābhaṁ vadāmi. Imesaṁ kho, gahapati, pañcannaṁ dhammānaṁ iṭṭhānaṁ kantānaṁ manāpānaṁ dullabhānaṁ lokasmiṁ āyācanahetu vā patthanāhetu vā paṭilābho abhavissa, ko idha kena hāyetha?

    And I say that these five things are not got by praying or wishing for them. If they were, who would lack them?

    न खो, गहपति, अरहति अरियसावको आयुकामो आयुं आयाचितुं वा अभिनन्दितुं वा आयुस्स वापि हेतु। आयुकामेन, गहपति, अरियसावकेन आयुसंवत्तनिका पटिपदा पटिपज्जितब्बा। आयुसंवत्तनिका हिस्स पटिपदा पटिपन्ना आयुपटिलाभाय संवत्तति। सो लाभी होति आयुस्स दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा।

    Na kho, gahapati, arahati ariyasāvako āyukāmo āyuṁ āyācituṁ vā abhinandituṁ vā āyussa vāpi hetu. Āyukāmena, gahapati, ariyasāvakena āyusaṁvattanikā paṭipadā paṭipajjitabbā. Āyusaṁvattanikā hissa paṭipadā paṭipannā āyupaṭilābhāya saṁvattati. So lābhī hoti āyussa dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

    A noble disciple who wants to live long ought not pray for it, or hope for it, or pine for it. Instead, they should practice the way that leads to long life. For by practicing that way they gain long life as a god or a human being.

    न खो, गहपति, अरहति अरियसावको वण्णकामो वण्णं आयाचितुं वा अभिनन्दितुं वा वण्णस्स वापि हेतु। वण्णकामेन, गहपति, अरियसावकेन वण्णसंवत्तनिका पटिपदा पटिपज्जितब्बा। वण्णसंवत्तनिका हिस्स पटिपदा पटिपन्ना वण्णपटिलाभाय संवत्तति। सो लाभी होति वण्णस्स दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा।

    Na kho, gahapati, arahati ariyasāvako vaṇṇakāmo vaṇṇaṁ āyācituṁ vā abhinandituṁ vā vaṇṇassa vāpi hetu. Vaṇṇakāmena, gahapati, ariyasāvakena vaṇṇasaṁvattanikā paṭipadā paṭipajjitabbā. Vaṇṇasaṁvattanikā hissa paṭipadā paṭipannā vaṇṇapaṭilābhāya saṁvattati. So lābhī hoti vaṇṇassa dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

    A noble disciple who wants to be beautiful ought not pray for it, or hope for it, or pine for it. Instead, they should practice the way that leads to beauty. For by practicing that way they gain beauty as a god or a human being.

    न खो, गहपति, अरहति अरियसावको सुखकामो सुखं आयाचितुं वा अभिनन्दितुं वा सुखस्स वापि हेतु। सुखकामेन, गहपति, अरियसावकेन सुखसंवत्तनिका पटिपदा पटिपज्जितब्बा। सुखसंवत्तनिका हिस्स पटिपदा पटिपन्ना सुखपटिलाभाय संवत्तति। सो लाभी होति सुखस्स दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा।

    Na kho, gahapati, arahati ariyasāvako sukhakāmo sukhaṁ āyācituṁ vā abhinandituṁ vā sukhassa vāpi hetu. Sukhakāmena, gahapati, ariyasāvakena sukhasaṁvattanikā paṭipadā paṭipajjitabbā. Sukhasaṁvattanikā hissa paṭipadā paṭipannā sukhapaṭilābhāya saṁvattati. So lābhī hoti sukhassa dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

    A noble disciple who wants to be happy ought not pray for it, or hope for it, or pine for it. Instead, they should practice the way that leads to happiness. For by practicing that way they gain happiness as a god or a human being.

    न खो, गहपति, अरहति अरियसावको यसकामो यसं आयाचितुं वा अभिनन्दितुं वा यसस्स वापि हेतु। यसकामेन, गहपति, अरियसावकेन यससंवत्तनिका पटिपदा पटिपज्जितब्बा। यससंवत्तनिका हिस्स पटिपदा पटिपन्ना यसपटिलाभाय संवत्तति। सो लाभी होति यसस्स दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा।

    Na kho, gahapati, arahati ariyasāvako yasakāmo yasaṁ āyācituṁ vā abhinandituṁ vā yasassa vāpi hetu. Yasakāmena, gahapati, ariyasāvakena yasasaṁvattanikā paṭipadā paṭipajjitabbā. Yasasaṁvattanikā hissa paṭipadā paṭipannā yasapaṭilābhāya saṁvattati. So lābhī hoti yasassa dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

    A noble disciple who wants to be famous ought not pray for it, or hope for it, or pine for it. Instead, they should practice the way that leads to fame. For by practicing that way they gain fame as a god or a human being.

    न खो, गहपति, अरहति अरियसावको सग्गकामो सग्गं आयाचितुं वा अभिनन्दितुं वा सग्गानं वापि हेतु। सग्गकामेन, गहपति, अरियसावकेन सग्गसंवत्तनिका पटिपदा पटिपज्जितब्बा। सग्गसंवत्तनिका हिस्स पटिपदा पटिपन्ना सग्गपटिलाभाय संवत्तति। सो लाभी होति सग्गानन्ति।

    Na kho, gahapati, arahati ariyasāvako saggakāmo saggaṁ āyācituṁ vā abhinandituṁ vā saggānaṁ vāpi hetu. Saggakāmena, gahapati, ariyasāvakena saggasaṁvattanikā paṭipadā paṭipajjitabbā. Saggasaṁvattanikā hissa paṭipadā paṭipannā saggapaṭilābhāya saṁvattati. So lābhī hoti saggānanti.

    A noble disciple who wants to go to heaven ought not pray for it, or hope for it, or pine for it. Instead, they should practice the way that leads to heaven. For by practicing that way they gain heaven, they are one who gains the heavens.

    आयुं वण्णं यसं कित्तिं, सग्गं उच्चाकुलीनतं; रतियो पत्थयानेन, उळारा अपरापरा।

    Āyuṁ vaṇṇaṁ yasaṁ kittiṁ, Saggaṁ uccākulīnataṁ; Ratiyo patthayānena, Uḷārā aparāparā.

    For one who desires a continuous flow of exceptional delights—long life, beauty, fame and reputation, heaven, and birth in an eminent family—

    अप्पमादं पसंसन्ति, पुञ्ञकिरियासु पण्डिता; अप्पमत्तो उभो अत्थे, अधिगण्हाति पण्डितो।

    Appamādaṁ pasaṁsanti, puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā; Appamatto ubho atthe, adhigaṇhāti paṇḍito.

    the astute praise diligence in making merit. Being diligent, an astute person secures both benefits:

    दिट्ठे धम्मे च यो अत्थो, यो चत्थो सम्परायिको; अत्थाभिसमया धीरो, पण्डितोति पवुच्चती”ति।

    Diṭṭhe dhamme ca2 yo attho, yo cattho samparāyiko; Atthābhisamayā dhīro, paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.

    the benefit in this life, and in lives to come. A wise one, comprehending the meaning, is called ‘astute’.”
