With Kāḷī
एकं समयं आयस्मा महाकच्चानो अवन्तीसु विहरति कुररघरे पवत्ते पब्बते।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā mahākaccāno avantīsu viharati kuraraghare pavatte pabbate.
At one time Venerable Mahākaccāna was staying in the land of the Avantis near Kuraraghara on Steep Mountain.
अथ खो काळी उपासिका कुररघरिका येनायस्मा महाकच्चानो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं महाकच्चानं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्ना खो काळी उपासिका कुररघरिका आयस्मन्तं महाकच्चानं एतदवोच: “वुत्तमिदं, भन्ते, भगवता कुमारिपञ्हेसु:
Atha kho kāḷī upāsikā kuraragharikā yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ mahākaccānaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho kāḷī upāsikā kuraragharikā āyasmantaṁ mahākaccānaṁ etadavoca: “vuttamidaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā kumāripañhesu:
Then the laywoman Kāḷī of Kurughara went up to Venerable Mahākaccāna, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, this was said by the Buddha in ‘The Maidens’ Questions’:
‘अत्थस्स पत्तिं हदयस्स सन्तिं, जेत्वान सेनं पियसातरूपं; एकोहं झायं सुखमनुबोधिं, तस्मा जनेन न करोमि सक्खिं; सक्खी न सम्पज्जति केनचि मेऽति।
‘Atthassa pattiṁ hadayassa santiṁ, Jetvāna senaṁ piyasātarūpaṁ; Ekohaṁ1 jhāyaṁ sukhamanubodhiṁ, Tasmā janena2 na karomi sakkhiṁ; Sakkhī3 na sampajjati kenaci me’ti.
‘I’ve reached the goal, peace of heart. Having conquered the army
of the likable and pleasant, alone, practicing jhāna, I awakened to bliss. That’s why I don’t get too close to people, and no-one gets too close to me.’
इमस्स खो, भन्ते, भगवता सङ्खित्तेन भासितस्स कथं वित्थारेन अत्थो दट्ठब्बो”ति?
Imassa kho, bhante, bhagavatā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa kathaṁ vitthārena attho daṭṭhabbo”ti?
How should we see the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement?”
“पथवीकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि, एके समणब्राह्मणा ‘अत्थोऽति अभिनिब्बत्तेसुं। यावता खो, भगिनि, पथवीकसिणसमापत्तिपरमता, तदभिञ्ञासि भगवा। तदभिञ्ञाय भगवा अस्सादमद्दस आदीनवमद्दस निस्सरणमद्दस मग्गामग्गञाणदस्सनमद्दस। तस्स अस्साददस्सनहेतु आदीनवदस्सनहेतु निस्सरणदस्सनहेतु मग्गामग्गञाणदस्सनहेतु अत्थस्स पत्ति हदयस्स सन्ति विदिता होति।
“Pathavīkasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā ‘attho’ti abhinibbattesuṁ. Yāvatā kho, bhagini, pathavīkasiṇasamāpattiparamatā, tadabhiññāsi bhagavā. Tadabhiññāya bhagavā assādamaddasa ādīnavamaddasa nissaraṇamaddasa maggāmaggañāṇadassanamaddasa. Tassa assādadassanahetu ādīnavadassanahetu nissaraṇadassanahetu maggāmaggañāṇadassanahetu atthassa patti hadayassa santi viditā hoti.
“Sister, some ascetics and brahmins regard the attainment of the meditation on universal earth to be the ultimate. Thinking ‘this is the goal’, they are reborn. The Buddha directly knew the extent to which the attainment of the meditation on universal earth was the ultimate. Directly knowing this he saw the beginning, the drawback, and the escape. And he saw the knowledge and vision of the variety of paths. Because he saw the beginning, the drawback, and the escape, and he saw the knowledge and vision of the variety of paths, he knew that he had reached the goal, peace of heart.
आपोकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि …पे… तेजोकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि … वायोकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि … नीलकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि … पीतकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि … लोहितकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि … ओदातकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि … आकासकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि … विञ्ञाणकसिणसमापत्तिपरमा खो, भगिनि, एके समणब्राह्मणा ‘अत्थोऽति अभिनिब्बत्तेसुं। यावता खो, भगिनि, विञ्ञाणकसिणसमापत्तिपरमता, तदभिञ्ञासि भगवा। तदभिञ्ञाय भगवा अस्सादमद्दस … आदीनवमद्दस … निस्सरणमद्दस … मग्गामग्गञाणदस्सनमद्दस … तस्स अस्साददस्सनहेतु आदीनवदस्सनहेतु निस्सरणदस्सनहेतु मग्गामग्गञाणदस्सनहेतु अत्थस्स पत्ति हदयस्स सन्ति विदिता होति।
Āpokasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini …pe… tejokasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini … vāyokasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini … nīlakasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini … pītakasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini … lohitakasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini … odātakasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini … ākāsakasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini … viññāṇakasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā ‘attho’ti abhinibbattesuṁ. Yāvatā kho, bhagini, viññāṇakasiṇasamāpattiparamatā, tadabhiññāsi bhagavā. Tadabhiññāya bhagavā assādamaddasa … ādīnavamaddasa … nissaraṇamaddasa … maggāmaggañāṇadassanamaddasa … tassa assādadassanahetu ādīnavadassanahetu nissaraṇadassanahetu maggāmaggañāṇadassanahetu atthassa patti hadayassa santi viditā hoti.
Some ascetics and brahmins regard the attainment of the meditation on universal water to be the ultimate. Thinking ‘this is the goal’, they are reborn. … Some ascetics and brahmins regard the attainment of the meditation on universal fire … universal air … universal blue … universal yellow … universal red … universal white … universal space … universal consciousness to be the ultimate. Thinking ‘this is the goal’, they are reborn. The Buddha directly knew the extent to which the attainment of the meditation on universal consciousness was the ultimate. Directly knowing this he saw the beginning, the drawback, and the escape. And he saw the knowledge and vision of the variety of paths. Because he saw the beginning, the drawback, and the escape, and he saw the knowledge and vision of the variety of paths, he knew that he had reached the goal, peace of heart.
इति खो, भगिनि, यं तं वुत्तं भगवता कुमारिपञ्हेसु:
Iti kho, bhagini, yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā kumāripañhesu:
So, sister, that’s how to understand the detailed meaning of what the Buddha said in brief in ‘The Maiden’s Questions’:
‘अत्थस्स पत्तिं हदयस्स सन्तिं, जेत्वान सेनं पियसातरूपं; एकोहं झायं सुखमनुबोधिं, तस्मा जनेन न करोमि सक्खिं; सक्खी न सम्पज्जति केनचि मेऽति।
