Sensual Pleasures
“येभुय्येन, भिक्खवे, सत्ता कामेसु लळिता। असितब्याभङ्गिं, भिक्खवे, कुलपुत्तो ओहाय अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजितो होति, ‘सद्धापब्बजितो कुलपुत्तोऽति अलंवचनाय। तं किस्स हेतु? लब्भा, भिक्खवे, योब्बनेन कामा ते च खो यादिसा वा तादिसा वा। ये च, भिक्खवे, हीना कामा ये च मज्झिमा कामा ये च पणीता कामा, सब्बे कामा ‘कामाऽत्वेव सङ्खं गच्छन्ति।
“Yebhuyyena, bhikkhave, sattā kāmesu laḷitā. Asitabyābhaṅgiṁ, bhikkhave, kulaputto ohāya agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito hoti, ‘saddhāpabbajito kulaputto’ti alaṁvacanāya. Taṁ kissa hetu? Labbhā, bhikkhave, yobbanena kāmā te ca kho yādisā vā tādisā vā. Ye ca, bhikkhave, hīnā kāmā ye ca majjhimā kāmā ye ca paṇītā kāmā, sabbe kāmā ‘kāmā’tveva saṅkhaṁ gacchanti.
“Bhikkhus, sentient beings are mostly charmed by sensual pleasures. When a gentleman has abandoned the scythe and flail and gone forth from the lay life to homelessness, they’re qualified to be called ‘a faithful renunciate from a good family’. Why is that? Because a youth can get sensual pleasures of this kind or that. Now, all sensual pleasures are just reckoned as ‘sensual pleasures’, regardless of whether they’re inferior, average, or superior.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, दहरो कुमारो मन्दो उत्तानसेय्यको धातिया पमादमन्वाय कट्ठं वा कठलं वा मुखे आहरेय्य। तमेनं धाति सीघं सीघं मनसि करेय्य; सीघं सीघं मनसि करित्वा सीघं सीघं आहरेय्य। नो चे सक्कुणेय्य सीघं सीघं आहरितुं, वामेन हत्थेन सीसं परिग्गहेत्वा दक्खिणेन हत्थेन वङ्कङ्गुलिं करित्वा सलोहितम्पि आहरेय्य। तं किस्स हेतु? ‘अत्थेसा, भिक्खवे, कुमारस्स विहेसा; नेसा नत्थीऽति वदामि। करणीयञ्च खो एतं, भिक्खवे, धातिया अत्थकामाय हितेसिनिया अनुकम्पिकाय, अनुकम्पं उपादाय। यतो च खो, भिक्खवे, सो कुमारो वुद्धो होति अलंपञ्ञो, अनपेक्खा दानि, भिक्खवे, धाति तस्मिं कुमारे होति: ‘अत्तगुत्तो दानि कुमारो नालं पमादायाऽति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, daharo kumāro mando uttānaseyyako dhātiyā pamādamanvāya kaṭṭhaṁ vā kaṭhalaṁ1 vā mukhe āhareyya. Tamenaṁ dhāti sīghaṁ sīghaṁ2 manasi kareyya; sīghaṁ sīghaṁ manasi karitvā sīghaṁ sīghaṁ āhareyya. No ce sakkuṇeyya sīghaṁ sīghaṁ āharituṁ, vāmena hatthena sīsaṁ pariggahetvā dakkhiṇena hatthena vaṅkaṅguliṁ karitvā salohitampi āhareyya. Taṁ kissa hetu? ‘Atthesā, bhikkhave, kumārassa vihesā; nesā natthī’ti vadāmi. Karaṇīyañca kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, dhātiyā atthakāmāya hitesiniyā anukampikāya, anukampaṁ upādāya. Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, so kumāro vuddho hoti alaṁpañño, anapekkhā dāni, bhikkhave, dhāti tasmiṁ kumāre hoti: ‘attagutto dāni kumāro nālaṁ pamādāyā’ti.
Suppose there was a little baby boy who, because of his nurse’s negligence, puts a stick or stone in his mouth. The nurse would very quickly notice and try to take it out. If that didn’t work, she’d cradle his head with her left hand, and take it out using a hooked finger of her right hand, even if it drew blood. Why is that? I admit she’d know, ‘This will distress the child, there’s no denying.’ Still, it should be done by a nurse who wants what’s best for him, out of kindness and compassion. And when the boy has grown up and has enough sense, his nurse would not worry about him, thinking: ‘The boy can look after himself. He won’t be negligent.’
एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, यावकीवञ्च भिक्खुनो सद्धाय अकतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, हिरिया अकतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, ओत्तप्पेन अकतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, वीरियेन अकतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, पञ्ञाय अकतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, अनुरक्खितब्बो ताव मे सो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु होति। यतो च खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो सद्धाय कतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, हिरिया कतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, ओत्तप्पेन कतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, वीरियेन कतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, पञ्ञाय कतं होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, अनपेक्खो दानाहं, भिक्खवे, तस्मिं भिक्खुस्मिं होमि: ‘अत्तगुत्तो दानि भिक्खु नालं पमादायाऽ”ति।
Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, yāvakīvañca bhikkhuno saddhāya akataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, hiriyā akataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, ottappena akataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, vīriyena akataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, paññāya akataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, anurakkhitabbo tāva me so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti. Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno saddhāya kataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, hiriyā kataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, ottappena kataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, vīriyena kataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, paññāya kataṁ hoti kusalesu dhammesu, anapekkho dānāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tasmiṁ bhikkhusmiṁ homi: ‘attagutto dāni bhikkhu nālaṁ pamādāyā’”ti.
In the same way, I still need to look after a bhikkhu who hasn’t finished developing faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities. But when a bhikkhu has finished developing faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities, I need not be concerned, thinking: ‘They can look after themselves. They won’t be negligent.’”
