    Kammanirodhasutta

    The Cessation of Action

    “नवपुराणानि, भिक्खवे, कम्मानि देसेस्सामि कम्मनिरोधं कम्मनिरोधगामिनिञ्च पटिपदं। तं सुणाथ, साधुकं मनसि करोथ, भासिस्सामीति।

    “Navapurāṇāni, bhikkhave, kammāni desessāmi kammanirodhaṁ kammanirodhagāminiñca paṭipadaṁ. Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmīti.

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you old action, new action, the cessation of action, and the practice that leads to the cessation of action. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak. …

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुराणकम्मं?

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, purāṇakammaṁ?

    And what is old action?

    चक्खु, भिक्खवे, पुराणकम्मं अभिसङ्खतं अभिसञ्चेतयितं वेदनियं दट्ठब्बं …पे…

    Cakkhu, bhikkhave, purāṇakammaṁ abhisaṅkhataṁ abhisañcetayitaṁ vedaniyaṁ daṭṭhabbaṁ …pe…

    The eye is old action. It should be seen as produced by choices and intentions, as something to be felt.

    जिव्हा पुराणकम्मा अभिसङ्खता अभिसञ्चेतयिता वेदनिया दट्ठब्बा …पे… मनो पुराणकम्मो अभिसङ्खतो अभिसञ्चेतयितो वेदनियो दट्ठब्बो।

    jivhā purāṇakammā abhisaṅkhatā abhisañcetayitā vedaniyā daṭṭhabbā …pe… mano purāṇakammo abhisaṅkhato abhisañcetayito vedaniyo daṭṭhabbo.

    The ear … nose … tongue … body … mind is old action. It should be seen as produced by choices and intentions, as something to be felt.

    इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पुराणकम्मं।

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, purāṇakammaṁ.

    This is called old action.

    कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, नवकम्मं?

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, navakammaṁ?

    And what is new action?

    यं खो, भिक्खवे, एतरहि कम्मं करोति कायेन वाचाय मनसा,

    Yaṁ kho, bhikkhave, etarahi kammaṁ karoti kāyena vācāya manasā,

    The deeds you currently perform by way of body, speech, and mind.

    इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, नवकम्मं।

    idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, navakammaṁ.

    This is called new action.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, कम्मनिरोधो?

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kammanirodho?

    And what is the cessation of action?

    यो खो, भिक्खवे, कायकम्मवचीकम्ममनोकम्मस्स निरोधा विमुत्तिं फुसति,

    Yo kho, bhikkhave, kāyakammavacīkammamanokammassa nirodhā vimuttiṁ phusati,

    When you experience freedom due to the cessation of deeds by body, speech, and mind.

    अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, कम्मनिरोधो।

    ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kammanirodho.

    This is called the cessation of action.

    कतमा च, भिक्खवे, कम्मनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदा?

    Katamā ca, bhikkhave, kammanirodhagāminī paṭipadā?

    And what’s the practice that leads to the cessation of action?

    अयमेव अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि, सम्मासङ्कप्पो, सम्मावाचा, सम्माकम्मन्तो, सम्माआजीवो, सम्मावायामो, सम्मासति, सम्मासमाधि—

    Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi—

    It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

    अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, कम्मनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदा।

    ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kammanirodhagāminī paṭipadā.

    This is called the practice that leads to the cessation of action.

    इति खो, भिक्खवे, देसितं मया पुराणकम्मं, देसितं नवकम्मं, देसितो कम्मनिरोधो, देसिता कम्मनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदा।

    Iti kho, bhikkhave, desitaṁ mayā purāṇakammaṁ, desitaṁ navakammaṁ, desito kammanirodho, desitā kammanirodhagāminī paṭipadā.

    So, bhikkhus, I’ve taught you old action, new action, the cessation of action, and the practice that leads to the cessation of action.

    यं खो, भिक्खवे, सत्थारा करणीयं सावकानं हितेसिना अनुकम्पकेन अनुकम्पं उपादाय, कतं वो तं मया। एतानि, भिक्खवे, रुक्खमूलानि, एतानि सुञ्ञागारानि। झायथ, भिक्खवे, मा पमादत्थ; मा पच्छाविप्पटिसारिनो अहुवत्थ। अयं वो अम्हाकं अनुसासनी”ति।

    Yaṁ kho, bhikkhave, satthārā karaṇīyaṁ sāvakānaṁ hitesinā anukampakena anukampaṁ upādāya, kataṁ vo taṁ mayā. Etāni, bhikkhave, rukkhamūlāni, etāni suññāgārāni. Jhāyatha, bhikkhave, mā pamādattha; mā pacchāvippaṭisārino ahuvattha. Ayaṁ vo amhākaṁ anusāsanī”ti.

    Out of compassion, I’ve done what a teacher should do who wants what’s best for their disciples. Here are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice jhāna, bhikkhus! Don’t be negligent! Don’t regret it later! This is my instruction to you.”

    पठमं।
