Thorns
एकं समयं भगवा वेसालियं विहरति महावने कूटागारसालायं सम्बहुलेहि अभिञ्ञातेहि अभिञ्ञातेहि थेरेहि सावकेहि सद्धिं—आयस्मता च चालेन, आयस्मता च उपचालेन, आयस्मता च कुक्कुटेन, आयस्मता च कळिम्भेन, आयस्मता च निकटेन, आयस्मता च कटिस्सहेन; अञ्ञेहि च अभिञ्ञातेहि अभिञ्ञातेहि थेरेहि सावकेहि सद्धिं।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ sambahulehi abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṁ—āyasmatā ca cālena, āyasmatā ca upacālena, āyasmatā ca kukkuṭena, āyasmatā ca kaḷimbhena, āyasmatā ca nikaṭena, āyasmatā ca kaṭissahena; aññehi ca abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṁ.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof, together with several well-known senior disciples. They included Venerables Cāla, Upacāla, Kakkaṭa, Kaṭimbha, Kaṭa, Kaṭissaṅga, and other well-known senior disciples.
तेन खो पन समयेन सम्बहुला अभिञ्ञाता अभिञ्ञाता लिच्छवी भद्रेहि भद्रेहि यानेहि परपुराय उच्चासद्दा महासद्दा महावनं अज्झोगाहन्ति भगवन्तं दस्सनाय। अथ खो तेसं आयस्मन्तानं एतदहोसि:
Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā abhiññātā abhiññātā licchavī bhadrehi bhadrehi yānehi parapurāya1 uccāsaddā mahāsaddā mahāvanaṁ ajjhogāhanti bhagavantaṁ dassanāya. Atha kho tesaṁ āyasmantānaṁ etadahosi:
Now at that time several well-known Licchavis plunged deep into the Great Wood to see the Buddha. Driving a succession of fine carriages, they made a dreadful racket. Then those venerables thought:
“इमे खो सम्बहुला अभिञ्ञाता अभिञ्ञाता लिच्छवी भद्रेहि भद्रेहि यानेहि परपुराय उच्चासद्दा महासद्दा महावनं अज्झोगाहन्ति भगवन्तं दस्सनाय। सद्दकण्टका खो पन झाना वुत्ता भगवता। यन्नून मयं येन गोसिङ्गसालवनदायो तेनुपसङ्कमेय्याम। तत्थ मयं अप्पसद्दा अप्पाकिण्णा फासुं विहरेय्यामा”ति। अथ खो ते आयस्मन्तो येन गोसिङ्गसालवनदायो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; तत्थ ते आयस्मन्तो अप्पसद्दा अप्पाकिण्णा फासुं विहरन्ति।
“ime kho sambahulā abhiññātā abhiññātā licchavī bhadrehi bhadrehi yānehi parapurāya uccāsaddā mahāsaddā mahāvanaṁ ajjhogāhanti bhagavantaṁ dassanāya. Saddakaṇṭakā kho pana jhānā vuttā bhagavatā. Yannūna mayaṁ yena gosiṅgasālavanadāyo tenupasaṅkameyyāma. Tattha mayaṁ appasaddā appākiṇṇā phāsuṁ2 vihareyyāmā”ti. Atha kho te āyasmanto yena gosiṅgasālavanadāyo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; tattha te āyasmanto appasaddā appākiṇṇā phāsuṁ viharanti.
“These several well-known Licchavis have plunged deep into the Great Wood to see the Buddha. Driving a succession of fine carriages, they’re making a dreadful racket. But the Buddha has said that sound is a thorn to jhāna. Let’s go to the Gosiṅga Sal Wood. There we can meditate comfortably, free of noise and crowds.” Then those venerables went to the Gosiṅga Sal Wood, where they meditated comfortably, free of noise and crowds.
अथ खो भगवा भिक्खू आमन्तेसि:
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
Then the Buddha said to the bhikkhus:
“कहं नु खो, भिक्खवे, चालो, कहं उपचालो, कहं कुक्कुटो, कहं कळिम्भो, कहं निकटो, कहं कटिस्सहो; कहं नु खो ते, भिक्खवे, थेरा सावका गता”ति?
“kahaṁ nu kho, bhikkhave, cālo, kahaṁ upacālo, kahaṁ kukkuṭo, kahaṁ kaḷimbho, kahaṁ nikaṭo, kahaṁ kaṭissaho; kahaṁ nu kho te, bhikkhave, therā sāvakā gatā”ti?
“Bhikkhus, where are Cāla, Upacāla, Kakkaṭa, Kaṭimbha, Kaṭa, and Kaṭissaṅga? Where have these senior disciples gone?”
“इध, भन्ते, तेसं आयस्मन्तानं एतदहोसि: ‘इमे खो सम्बहुला अभिञ्ञाता अभिञ्ञाता लिच्छवी भद्रेहि भद्रेहि यानेहि परपुराय उच्चासद्दा महासद्दा महावनं अज्झोगाहन्ति भगवन्तं दस्सनाय सद्दकण्टका खो पन झाना वुत्ता भगवता यन्नून मयं येन गोसिङ्गसालवनदायो तेनुपसङ्कमेय्याम तत्थ मयं अप्पसद्दा अप्पाकिण्णा फासुं विहरेय्यामाऽति। अथ खो ते, भन्ते, आयस्मन्तो येन गोसिङ्गसालवनदायो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु। तत्थ ते आयस्मन्तो अप्पसद्दा अप्पाकिण्णा फासुं विहरन्ती”ति।
“Idha, bhante, tesaṁ āyasmantānaṁ etadahosi: ‘ime kho sambahulā abhiññātā abhiññātā licchavī bhadrehi bhadrehi yānehi parapurāya uccāsaddā mahāsaddā mahāvanaṁ ajjhogāhanti bhagavantaṁ dassanāya saddakaṇṭakā kho pana jhānā vuttā bhagavatā yannūna mayaṁ yena gosiṅgasālavanadāyo tenupasaṅkameyyāma tattha mayaṁ appasaddā appākiṇṇā phāsuṁ vihareyyāmā’ti. Atha kho te, bhante, āyasmanto yena gosiṅgasālavanadāyo tenupasaṅkamiṁsu. Tattha te āyasmanto appasaddā appākiṇṇā phāsuṁ viharantī”ti.
And the bhikkhus told him what had happened.
“साधु साधु, भिक्खवे, यथा ते महासावका सम्मा ब्याकरमाना ब्याकरेय्युं, सद्दकण्टका हि, भिक्खवे, झाना वुत्ता मया।
“Sādhu sādhu, bhikkhave, yathā te mahāsāvakā sammā byākaramānā byākareyyuṁ, saddakaṇṭakā hi, bhikkhave, jhānā vuttā mayā.
“Good, good, bhikkhus! It’s just as those great disciples have so rightly explained. I have said that sound is a thorn to jhāna.
दसयिमे, भिक्खवे, कण्टका। कतमे दस? पविवेकारामस्स सङ्गणिकारामता कण्टको, असुभनिमित्तानुयोगं अनुयुत्तस्स सुभनिमित्तानुयोगो कण्टको, इन्द्रियेसु गुत्तद्वारस्स विसूकदस्सनं कण्टको, ब्रह्मचरियस्स मातुगामूपचारो कण्टको, पठमस्स झानस्स सद्दो कण्टको, दुतियस्स झानस्स वितक्कविचारा कण्टका, ततियस्स झानस्स पीति कण्टको, चतुत्थस्स झानस्स अस्सासपस्सासो कण्टको, सञ्ञावेदयितनिरोधसमापत्तिया सञ्ञा च वेदना च कण्टको रागो कण्टको दोसो कण्टको मोहो कण्टको।
Dasayime, bhikkhave, kaṇṭakā. Katame dasa? Pavivekārāmassa saṅgaṇikārāmatā kaṇṭako, asubhanimittānuyogaṁ anuyuttassa subhanimittānuyogo kaṇṭako, indriyesu guttadvārassa visūkadassanaṁ kaṇṭako, brahmacariyassa3 mātugāmūpacāro kaṇṭako, paṭhamassa jhānassa saddo kaṇṭako, dutiyassa jhānassa vitakkavicārā kaṇṭakā, tatiyassa jhānassa pīti kaṇṭako, catutthassa jhānassa assāsapassāso kaṇṭako, saññāvedayitanirodhasamāpattiyā saññā ca vedanā ca kaṇṭako rāgo kaṇṭako doso kaṇṭako moho kaṇṭako.
Bhikkhus, there are these ten thorns. What ten? Relishing company is a thorn for someone who loves seclusion. Focusing on the beautiful feature of things is a thorn for someone pursuing the meditation on ugliness. Seeing shows is a thorn to someone restraining the senses. Lingering in the neighborhood of females is a thorn to celibacy. Sound is a thorn to the first jhāna. Placing the mind and keeping it connected are a thorn to the second jhāna. Rapture is a thorn to the third jhāna. Breathing is a thorn to the fourth jhāna. Perception and feeling are a thorn to the attainment of the cessation of perception and feeling. Greed, hate, and delusion are thorns.
अकण्टका, भिक्खवे, विहरथ। निक्कण्टका, भिक्खवे, विहरथ। अकण्टकनिक्कण्टका, भिक्खवे, विहरथ। अकण्टका, भिक्खवे, अरहन्तो; निक्कण्टका, भिक्खवे, अरहन्तो; अकण्टकनिक्कण्टका, भिक्खवे, अरहन्तो”ति।
Akaṇṭakā, bhikkhave, viharatha. Nikkaṇṭakā, bhikkhave, viharatha. Akaṇṭakanikkaṇṭakā, bhikkhave, viharatha. Akaṇṭakā, bhikkhave, arahanto; nikkaṇṭakā, bhikkhave, arahanto; akaṇṭakanikkaṇṭakā, bhikkhave, arahanto”ti.
Bhikkhus, live free of thorns! Live rid of thorns! Bhikkhus, live free of thorns and rid of thorns! The perfected ones live free of thorns, rid of thorns, free and rid of thorns.”
