Kāyasakkhīsutta
A Personal Witness
“‘कायसक्खी, कायसक्खीऽति, आवुसो, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, आवुसो, कायसक्खी वुत्तो भगवता”ति?
“‘Kāyasakkhī, kāyasakkhī’ti, āvuso, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, kāyasakkhī vutto bhagavatā”ti?
“Friend, they speak of a person called ‘personal witness’. What is the personal witness that the Buddha spoke of?”
इधावुसो, भिक्खु विविच्चेव कामेहि …पे… पठमं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। यथा यथा च तदायतनं तथा तथा नं कायेन फुसित्वा विहरति। एत्तावतापि खो, आवुसो, कायसक्खी वुत्तो भगवता परियायेन।
Idhāvuso, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi …pe… paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. Yathā yathā ca tadāyatanaṁ tathā tathā naṁ kāyena phusitvā viharati. Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, kāyasakkhī vutto bhagavatā pariyāyena.
“First, take a bhikkhu who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and remains in the first jhāna. They meditate directly experiencing that dimension in every way. To this extent the Buddha spoke of the personal witness in a qualified sense.
पुन चपरं, आवुसो, भिक्खु वितक्कविचारानं वूपसमा …पे… दुतियं झानं … ततियं झानं … चतुत्थं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। यथा यथा च तदायतनं तथा तथा नं कायेन फुसित्वा विहरति। एत्तावतापि खो, आवुसो, कायसक्खी वुत्तो भगवता परियायेन।
Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā …pe… dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ … tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ … catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. Yathā yathā ca tadāyatanaṁ tathā tathā naṁ kāyena phusitvā viharati. Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, kāyasakkhī vutto bhagavatā pariyāyena.
Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who, as the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, enters and remains in the second jhāna … third jhāna … fourth jhāna. They meditate directly experiencing that dimension in every way. To this extent the Buddha spoke of the personal witness in a qualified sense.
पुन चपरं, आवुसो, भिक्खु सब्बसो रूपसञ्ञानं समतिक्कमा पटिघसञ्ञानं अत्थङ्गमा नानत्तसञ्ञानं अमनसिकारा ‘अनन्तो आकासोऽति आकासानञ्चायतनं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। यथा यथा च तदायतनं तथा तथा नं कायेन फुसित्वा विहरति। एत्तावतापि खो, आवुसो, कायसक्खी वुत्तो भगवता परियायेन …पे…।
Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso rūpasaññānaṁ samatikkamā paṭighasaññānaṁ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṁ amanasikārā ‘ananto ākāso’ti ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati. Yathā yathā ca tadāyatanaṁ tathā tathā naṁ kāyena phusitvā viharati. Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, kāyasakkhī vutto bhagavatā pariyāyena …pe….
Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who, going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ‘space is infinite’, enters and remains in the dimension of infinite space. They meditate directly experiencing that dimension in every way. To this extent the Buddha spoke of the personal witness in a qualified sense. Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who enters and remains in the dimension of infinite consciousness … the dimension of nothingness … the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception …
पुन चपरं, आवुसो, भिक्खु सब्बसो नेवसञ्ञानासञ्ञायतनं समतिक्कम्म सञ्ञावेदयितनिरोधं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति, पञ्ञाय चस्स दिस्वा आसवा परिक्खीणा होन्ति। यथा यथा च तदायतनं तथा तथा नं कायेन फुसित्वा विहरति। एत्तावतापि खो, आवुसो, कायसक्खी वुत्तो भगवता निप्परियायेना”ति।
Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ upasampajja viharati, paññāya cassa disvā āsavā parikkhīṇā honti. Yathā yathā ca tadāyatanaṁ tathā tathā naṁ kāyena phusitvā viharati. Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, kāyasakkhī vutto bhagavatā nippariyāyenā”ti.
Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, enters and remains in the cessation of perception and feeling. And, having seen with wisdom, their defilements come to an end. They meditate directly experiencing that dimension in every way. To this extent the Buddha spoke of the personal witness in a definitive sense.”
