    अथ खो जाणुस्सोणि ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो जाणुस्सोणि ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho jāṇussoṇi1 brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    And then the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

    “खत्तिया, भो गोतम, किंअधिप्पाया, किंउपविचारा, किंअधिट्ठाना, किंअभिनिवेसा, किंपरियोसाना”ति?

    “Khattiyā, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiṭṭhānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānā”ti?

    “Aristocrats, Master Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they dedicated to? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?”

    “खत्तिया खो, ब्राह्मण, भोगाधिप्पाया पञ्ञूपविचारा बलाधिट्ठाना पथवीभिनिवेसा इस्सरियपरियोसाना”ति।

    “Khattiyā kho, brāhmaṇa, bhogādhippāyā paññūpavicārā balādhiṭṭhānā pathavībhinivesā issariyapariyosānā”ti.

    “Aristocrats, brahmin, have wealth as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re dedicated to power. They insist on territory. Their ultimate goal is authority.”

    “ब्राह्मणा पन, भो गोतम, किंअधिप्पाया, किंउपविचारा, किंअधिट्ठाना, किंअभिनिवेसा, किंपरियोसाना”ति?

    “Brāhmaṇā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiṭṭhānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānā”ti?

    “Brahmins, Master Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they dedicated to? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?”

    “ब्राह्मणा खो, ब्राह्मण, भोगाधिप्पाया पञ्ञूपविचारा मन्ताधिट्ठाना यञ्ञाभिनिवेसा ब्रह्मलोकपरियोसाना”ति।

    “Brāhmaṇā kho, brāhmaṇa, bhogādhippāyā paññūpavicārā mantādhiṭṭhānā yaññābhinivesā brahmalokapariyosānā”ti.

    “Brahmins have wealth as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re dedicated to the hymns. They insist on sacrifice. Their ultimate goal is the Brahmā realm.”

    “गहपतिका पन, भो गोतम, किंअधिप्पाया, किंउपविचारा, किंअधिट्ठाना, किंअभिनिवेसा, किंपरियोसाना”ति?

    “Gahapatikā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiṭṭhānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānā”ti?

    “Householders, Master Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they dedicated to? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?”

    “गहपतिका खो, ब्राह्मण, भोगाधिप्पाया पञ्ञूपविचारा सिप्पाधिट्ठाना कम्मन्ताभिनिवेसा निट्ठितकम्मन्तपरियोसाना”ति।

    “Gahapatikā kho, brāhmaṇa, bhogādhippāyā paññūpavicārā sippādhiṭṭhānā kammantābhinivesā niṭṭhitakammantapariyosānā”ti.

    “Householders have wealth as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re dedicated to their profession. They insist on work. Their ultimate goal is to complete their work.”

    “इत्थी पन, भो गोतम, किंअधिप्पाया, किंउपविचारा, किंअधिट्ठाना, किंअभिनिवेसा, किंपरियोसाना”ति?

    “Itthī pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiṭṭhānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānā”ti?

    “Women, Master Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they dedicated to? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?”

    “इत्थी खो, ब्राह्मण, पुरिसाधिप्पाया अलङ्कारूपविचारा पुत्ताधिट्ठाना असपत्तीभिनिवेसा इस्सरियपरियोसाना”ति।

    “Itthī kho, brāhmaṇa, purisādhippāyā alaṅkārūpavicārā puttādhiṭṭhānā asapattībhinivesā issariyapariyosānā”ti.

    “Women have a man as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with adornments. They’re dedicated to their children. They insist on being without a co-wife. Their ultimate goal is authority.”

    “चोरा पन, भो गोतम, किंअधिप्पाया, किंउपविचारा, किंअधिट्ठाना, किंअभिनिवेसा, किंपरियोसाना”ति?

    “Corā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiṭṭhānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānā”ti?

    “Bandits, Master Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they dedicated to? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?”

    “चोरा खो, ब्राह्मण, आदानाधिप्पाया गहनूपविचारा सत्थाधिट्ठाना अन्धकाराभिनिवेसा अदस्सनपरियोसाना”ति।

    “Corā kho, brāhmaṇa, ādānādhippāyā gahanūpavicārā satthādhiṭṭhānā andhakārābhinivesā adassanapariyosānā”ti.

    “Bandits have theft as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with a hiding place. They’re dedicated to their sword. They insist on darkness. Their ultimate goal is invisibility.”

    “समणा पन, भो गोतम, किंअधिप्पाया, किंउपविचारा, किंअधिट्ठाना, किंअभिनिवेसा, किंपरियोसाना”ति?

    “Samaṇā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiṭṭhānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānā”ti?

    “Ascetics, Master Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they dedicated to? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?”

    “समणा खो, ब्राह्मण, खन्तिसोरच्चाधिप्पाया पञ्ञूपविचारा सीलाधिट्ठाना आकिञ्चञ्ञाभिनिवेसा निब्बानपरियोसाना”ति।

    “Samaṇā kho, brāhmaṇa, khantisoraccādhippāyā paññūpavicārā sīlādhiṭṭhānā ākiñcaññābhinivesā nibbānapariyosānā”ti.

    “Ascetics have patience and gentleness as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re dedicated to ethical conduct. They insist on owning nothing. Their ultimate goal is Nibbana.”

    “अच्छरियं, भो गोतम, अब्भुतं, भो गोतम। खत्तियानम्पि भवं गोतमो जानाति अधिप्पायञ्च उपविचारञ्च अधिट्ठानञ्च अभिनिवेसञ्च परियोसानञ्च। ब्राह्मणानम्पि भवं गोतमो जानाति …पे… गहपतीनम्पि भवं गोतमो जानाति … इत्थीनम्पि भवं गोतमो जानाति … चोरानम्पि भवं गोतमो जानाति … समणानम्पि भवं गोतमो जानाति अधिप्पायञ्च उपविचारञ्च अधिट्ठानञ्च अभिनिवेसञ्च परियोसानञ्च। अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… उपासकं मं भवं गोतमो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    “Acchariyaṁ, bho gotama, abbhutaṁ, bho gotama. Khattiyānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti adhippāyañca upavicārañca adhiṭṭhānañca abhinivesañca pariyosānañca. Brāhmaṇānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti …pe… gahapatīnampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti … itthīnampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti … corānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti … samaṇānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti adhippāyañca upavicārañca adhiṭṭhānañca abhinivesañca pariyosānañca. Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    “It’s incredible, Master Gotama, it’s amazing! Master Gotama knows the ambition, preoccupation, dedication, insistence, and ultimate goal of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, women, bandits, and ascetics. Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
