    Khemasutta

    With Khema

    एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा च खेमो आयस्मा च सुमनो सावत्थियं विहरन्ति अन्धवनस्मिं। अथ खो आयस्मा च खेमो आयस्मा च सुमनो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदिंसु। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा खेमो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ca khemo āyasmā ca sumano sāvatthiyaṁ viharanti andhavanasmiṁ. Atha kho āyasmā ca khemo āyasmā ca sumano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā khemo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Now at that time Venerable Khema and Venerable Sumana were staying near Sāvatthī in the Dark Forest. Then they went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. Venerable Khema said to the Buddha:

    “यो सो, भन्ते, भिक्खु अरहं खीणासवो वुसितवा कतकरणीयो ओहितभारो अनुप्पत्तसदत्थो परिक्खीणभवसंयोजनो सम्मदञ्ञाविमुत्तो तस्स न एवं होति: ‘अत्थि मे सेय्योति वा अत्थि मे सदिसोति वा अत्थि मे हीनोति वाऽ”ति।

    “Yo so, bhante, bhikkhu arahaṁ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojano sammadaññāvimutto tassa na evaṁ hoti: ‘atthi me seyyoti vā atthi me sadisoti vā atthi me hīnoti vā’”ti.

    “Sir, a bhikkhu who is perfected—with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetters of rebirth, and is rightly freed through enlightenment—does not think: ‘There is someone better than me, or equal to me, or worse than me.’”

    इदमवोचायस्मा खेमो। समनुञ्ञो सत्था अहोसि। अथ खो आयस्मा खेमो “समनुञ्ञो मे सत्था”ति उट्ठायासना भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा पक्कामि।

    Idamavocāyasmā khemo. Samanuñño satthā ahosi. Atha kho āyasmā khemo “samanuñño me satthā”ti uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.

    That is what Khema said, and the teacher approved. Then Khema, knowing that the teacher approved, got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

    अथ खो आयस्मा सुमनो अचिरपक्कन्ते आयस्मन्ते खेमे भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho āyasmā sumano acirapakkante āyasmante kheme bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    And then, not long after Khema had left, Sumana said to the Buddha:

    “यो सो, भन्ते, भिक्खु अरहं खीणासवो वुसितवा कतकरणीयो ओहितभारो अनुप्पत्तसदत्थो परिक्खीणभवसंयोजनो सम्मदञ्ञाविमुत्तो तस्स न एवं होति: ‘नत्थि मे सेय्योति वा नत्थि मे सदिसोति वा नत्थि मे हीनोति वाऽ”ति।

    इदमवोचायस्मा सुमनो। समनुञ्ञो सत्था अहोसि। अथ खो आयस्मा सुमनो “समनुञ्ञो मे सत्था”ति उट्ठायासना भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा पक्कामि।

    Idamavocāyasmā sumano. Samanuñño satthā ahosi. Atha kho āyasmā sumano “samanuñño me satthā”ti uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.

    That is what Sumana said, and the teacher approved. Then Sumana, knowing that the teacher approved, got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

    अथ खो भगवा अचिरपक्कन्तेसु आयस्मन्ते च खेमे आयस्मन्ते च सुमने भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “एवं खो, भिक्खवे, कुलपुत्ता अञ्ञं ब्याकरोन्ति। अत्थो च वुत्तो अत्ता च अनुपनीतो। अथ च पन इधेकच्चे मोघपुरिसा हसमानका मञ्ञे अञ्ञं ब्याकरोन्ति। ते पच्छा विघातं आपज्जन्तीति।

    Atha kho bhagavā acirapakkantesu āyasmante ca kheme āyasmante ca sumane bhikkhū āmantesi: “evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, kulaputtā aññaṁ byākaronti. Attho ca vutto attā ca anupanīto. Atha ca pana idhekacce moghapurisā hasamānakā1 maññe aññaṁ byākaronti. Te pacchā vighātaṁ āpajjantīti.

    And then, soon after Khema and Sumana had left, the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, this is how gentlemen declare enlightenment. The goal is spoken of, but the self is not involved. But it seems that there are some foolish people here who declare enlightenment as a joke. Later they will fall into anguish.

    न उस्सेसु न ओमेसु, समत्ते नोपनीयरे; खीणा जाति वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, चरन्ति संयोजनविप्पमुत्ता”ति।

    Na ussesu na omesu, Samatte nopanīyare; Khīṇā jāti vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, Caranti saṁyojanavippamuttā”ti.

    They don’t rank themselves as being among superiors, inferiors, or equals. Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed. They live freed from fetters.”

    सत्तमं।
