A Field
“अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागते, भिक्खवे, खेत्ते बीजं वुत्तं न महप्फलं होति न महस्सादं न फातिसेय्यं। कथं अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागते? इध, भिक्खवे, खेत्तं उन्नामनिन्नामि च होति, पासाणसक्खरिकञ्च होति, ऊसरञ्च होति, न च गम्भीरसितं होति, न आयसम्पन्नं होति, न अपायसम्पन्नं होति, न मातिकासम्पन्नं होति, न मरियादसम्पन्नं होति। एवं अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागते, भिक्खवे, खेत्ते बीजं वुत्तं न महप्फलं होति न महस्सादं न फातिसेय्यं।
“Aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgate, bhikkhave, khette bījaṁ vuttaṁ na mahapphalaṁ hoti na mahassādaṁ na phātiseyyaṁ. Kathaṁ aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgate? Idha, bhikkhave, khettaṁ unnāmaninnāmi ca hoti, pāsāṇasakkharikañca hoti, ūsarañca hoti, na ca gambhīrasitaṁ hoti, na āyasampannaṁ hoti, na apāyasampannaṁ hoti, na mātikāsampannaṁ hoti, na mariyādasampannaṁ hoti. Evaṁ aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgate, bhikkhave, khette bījaṁ vuttaṁ na mahapphalaṁ hoti na mahassādaṁ na phātiseyyaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, when a field has eight factors a seed sown in it is not very fruitful or rewarding or productive. What eight factors does it have? It’s when a field has mounds and ditches. It has stones and gravel. It’s salty. It doesn’t have deep furrows. And it’s not equipped with water inlets, water outlets, irrigation channels, and boundaries. When a field has these eight factors a seed sown in it is not fruitful or rewarding or productive.
एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागतेसु समणब्राह्मणेसु दानं दिन्नं न महप्फलं होति न महानिसंसं न महाजुतिकं न महाविप्फारं। कथं अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागतेसु? इध, भिक्खवे, समणब्राह्मणा मिच्छादिट्ठिका होन्ति, मिच्छासङ्कप्पा, मिच्छावाचा, मिच्छाकम्मन्ता, मिच्छाआजीवा, मिच्छावायामा, मिच्छासतिनो, मिच्छासमाधिनो। एवं अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागतेसु, भिक्खवे, समणब्राह्मणेसु दानं दिन्नं न महप्फलं होति न महानिसंसं न महाजुतिकं न महाविप्फारं।
Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgatesu samaṇabrāhmaṇesu dānaṁ dinnaṁ na mahapphalaṁ hoti na mahānisaṁsaṁ na mahājutikaṁ na mahāvipphāraṁ. Kathaṁ aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgatesu? Idha, bhikkhave, samaṇabrāhmaṇā micchādiṭṭhikā honti, micchāsaṅkappā, micchāvācā, micchākammantā, micchāājīvā, micchāvāyāmā, micchāsatino, micchāsamādhino. Evaṁ aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgatesu, bhikkhave, samaṇabrāhmaṇesu dānaṁ dinnaṁ na mahapphalaṁ hoti na mahānisaṁsaṁ na mahājutikaṁ na mahāvipphāraṁ.
In the same way, when an ascetic or brahmin has eight factors a gift given to them is not very fruitful or beneficial or splendid or bountiful. What eight factors do they have? It’s when an ascetic or brahmin has wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong immersion. When an ascetic or brahmin has these eight factors a gift given to them is not very fruitful or beneficial or splendid or bountiful.
अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागते, भिक्खवे, खेत्ते बीजं वुत्तं महप्फलं होति महस्सादं फातिसेय्यं। कथं अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागते? इध, भिक्खवे, खेत्तं अनुन्नामानिन्नामि च होति, अपासाणसक्खरिकञ्च होति, अनूसरञ्च होति, गम्भीरसितं होति, आयसम्पन्नं होति, अपायसम्पन्नं होति, मातिकासम्पन्नं होति, मरियादसम्पन्नं होति। एवं अट्ठङ्गसमन्नागते, भिक्खवे, खेत्ते बीजं वुत्तं महप्फलं होति महस्सादं फातिसेय्यं।

Evaṁ aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgatesu, bhikkhave, samaṇabrāhmaṇesu dānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ hoti mahānisaṁsaṁ mahājutikaṁ mahāvipphāranti.
In the same way, when an ascetic or brahmin has eight factors a gift given to them is very fruitful and beneficial and splendid and bountiful. What eight factors do they have? It’s when an ascetic or brahmin has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. When an ascetic or brahmin has these eight factors a gift given to them is very fruitful and beneficial and splendid and bountiful.
यथापि खेत्ते सम्पन्ने, पवुत्ता बीजसम्पदा; देवे सम्पादयन्तम्हि, होति धञ्ञस्स सम्पदा।
Yathāpi khette sampanne, pavuttā bījasampadā; Deve sampādayantamhi, hoti dhaññassa sampadā.
When the field is excellent, and the seed sown in it is excellent, and the rainfall is excellent, the crop of grain will be excellent.
अनीतिसम्पदा होति, विरूळ्ही भवति सम्पदा; वेपुल्लसम्पदा होति, फलं वे होति सम्पदा।
Anītisampadā hoti, virūḷhī bhavati sampadā; Vepullasampadā hoti, phalaṁ ve hoti sampadā.
Its health is excellent, its growth is excellent, its maturation is excellent, and its fruit is excellent.
एवं सम्पन्नसीलेसु, दिन्ना भोजनसम्पदा; सम्पदानं उपनेति, सम्पन्नं हिस्स तं कतं।
Evaṁ sampannasīlesu, dinnā bhojanasampadā; Sampadānaṁ upaneti, sampannaṁ hissa taṁ kataṁ.
So too, when you give excellent food to those of excellent ethics, it leads to many excellences, for what you did was excellent.
तस्मा सम्पदमाकङ्खी, सम्पन्नत्थूध पुग्गलो; सम्पन्नपञ्ञे सेवेथ, एवं इज्झन्ति सम्पदा।
Tasmā sampadamākaṅkhī, sampannatthūdha puggalo; Sampannapaññe sevetha, evaṁ ijjhanti sampadā.
So if a person wants excellence, let them excel in this. You should frequent those with excellent wisdom, so that your own excellence will flourish.
विज्जाचरणसम्पन्ने, लद्धा चित्तस्स सम्पदं; करोति कम्मसम्पदं, लभति चत्थसम्पदं।
Vijjācaraṇasampanne, laddhā cittassa sampadaṁ; Karoti kammasampadaṁ, labhati catthasampadaṁ.
Excelling in knowledge and conduct, and having excellence of mind, you perform excellent deeds, and gain excellent benefits.
लोकं ञत्वा यथाभूतं, पप्पुय्य दिट्ठिसम्पदं; मग्गसम्पदमागम्म, याति सम्पन्नमानसो।
Lokaṁ ñatvā yathābhūtaṁ, pappuyya diṭṭhisampadaṁ; Maggasampadamāgamma, yāti sampannamānaso.
Truly knowing the world, and having attained excellence of view, one who excels in mind proceeds, relying on excellence in the path.
ओधुनित्वा मलं सब्बं, पत्वा निब्बानसम्पदं; मुच्चति सब्बदुक्खेहि, सा होति सब्बसम्पदा”ति।
Odhunitvā malaṁ sabbaṁ, patvā nibbānasampadaṁ; Muccati sabbadukkhehi, sā hoti sabbasampadā”ti.
Shaking off all stains, and attaining the excellence of Nibbana, you’re freed from all sufferings: this is complete excellence.”
