    “Bhikkhus, these four people are found in the world. What four?

      अत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो नो परहिताय,

      attahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya,

      One who practices to benefit themselves, but not others;

    परहिताय पटिपन्नो नो अत्तहिताय,

    parahitāya paṭipanno no attahitāya,

    one who practices to benefit others, but not themselves;

    नेवत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो नो परहिताय,

    nevattahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya,

    one who practices to benefit neither themselves nor others; and

    अत्तहिताय चेव पटिपन्नो परहिताय च।

    attahitāya ceva paṭipanno parahitāya ca.

    one who practices to benefit both themselves and others.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो अत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो होति, नो परहिताय? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो खिप्पनिसन्ती च होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, सुतानञ्च धम्मानं धारकजातिको होति, धातानञ्च धम्मानं अत्थूपपरिक्खी होति अत्थमञ्ञाय धम्ममञ्ञाय, धम्मानुधम्मप्पटिपन्नो होति; नो च कल्याणवाचो होति कल्याणवाक्करणो पोरिया वाचाय समन्नागतो विस्सट्ठाय अनेलगलाय अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनिया, नो च सन्दस्सको होति समादपको समुत्तेजको सम्पहंसको सब्रह्मचारीनं। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो अत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो होति, नो परहिताय।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo attahitāya paṭipanno hoti, no parahitāya? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo khippanisantī ca hoti kusalesu dhammesu, sutānañca dhammānaṁ dhārakajātiko1 hoti, dhātānañca dhammānaṁ atthūpaparikkhī hoti atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya, dhammānudhammappaṭipanno hoti; no ca kalyāṇavāco hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagalāya atthassa viññāpaniyā, no ca sandassako hoti samādapako2 samuttejako sampahaṁsako sabrahmacārīnaṁ. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo attahitāya paṭipanno hoti, no parahitāya.

    And how does a person practice to benefit themselves, but not others? It’s when a person is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings. They readily memorize the teachings they’ve heard. They examine the meaning of teachings they’ve memorized. Understanding the meaning and the teaching, they practice accordingly. But they’re not a good speaker. Their voice isn’t polished, clear, articulate, and doesn’t express the meaning. They don’t educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire their spiritual companions. That’s how a person practices to benefit themselves, but not others.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो परहिताय पटिपन्नो होति, नो अत्तहिताय? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो न हेव खो खिप्पनिसन्ती होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, नो च सुतानं धम्मानं धारकजातिको होति, नो च धातानं धम्मानं अत्थूपपरिक्खी होति, नो च अत्थमञ्ञाय धम्ममञ्ञाय धम्मानुधम्मप्पटिपन्नो होति; कल्याणवाचो च होति कल्याणवाक्करणो पोरिया वाचाय समन्नागतो विस्सट्ठाय अनेलगलाय अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनिया, सन्दस्सको च होति समादपको समुत्तेजको सम्पहंसको सब्रह्मचारीनं। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो परहिताय पटिपन्नो होति, नो अत्तहिताय।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo parahitāya paṭipanno hoti, no attahitāya? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo na heva kho khippanisantī hoti kusalesu dhammesu, no ca sutānaṁ dhammānaṁ dhārakajātiko hoti, no ca dhātānaṁ dhammānaṁ atthūpaparikkhī hoti, no ca atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno hoti; kalyāṇavāco ca hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagalāya atthassa viññāpaniyā, sandassako ca hoti samādapako samuttejako sampahaṁsako sabrahmacārīnaṁ. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo parahitāya paṭipanno hoti, no attahitāya.

    And how does a person practice to benefit others, but not themselves? It’s when a person is not quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings. … But they’re a good speaker. … That’s how a person practices to benefit others, but not themselves.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो नेवत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो होति, नो परहिताय? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो न हेव खो खिप्पनिसन्ती होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु, नो च सुतानं धम्मानं धारकजातिको होति, नो च धातानं धम्मानं अत्थूपपरिक्खी होति, नो च अत्थमञ्ञाय धम्ममञ्ञाय धम्मानुधम्मप्पटिपन्नो होति; नो च कल्याणवाचो होति कल्याणवाक्करणो पोरिया वाचाय समन्नागतो विस्सट्ठाय अनेलगलाय अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनिया, नो च सन्दस्सको होति समादपको समुत्तेजको सम्पहंसको सब्रह्मचारीनं। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो नेवत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो होति, नो परहिताय।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo attahitāya ceva paṭipanno hoti parahitāya ca?
