What’s the Purpose
“किमत्थियं, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, समणे गोतमे ब्रह्मचरियं वुस्सती”ति?
“Kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso sāriputta, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī”ti?
“Friend Sāriputta, what’s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?”
“दुक्खस्स खो, आवुसो, परिञ्ञत्थं भगवति ब्रह्मचरियं वुस्सती”ति।
“Dukkhassa kho, āvuso, pariññatthaṁ bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatī”ti.
“The purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand suffering.”
“अत्थि पनावुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा एतस्स दुक्खस्स परिञ्ञाया”ति?
“Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa dukkhassa pariññāyā”ti?
“But, friend, is there a path and a practice for completely understanding this suffering?”
“अत्थि खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा, एतस्स दुक्खस्स परिञ्ञाया”ति?
“Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā, etassa dukkhassa pariññāyā”ti?
“There is.” …
“कतमो पनावुसो, मग्गो कतमा पटिपदा, एतस्स दुक्खस्स परिञ्ञाया”ति?
“Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā, etassa dukkhassa pariññāyā”ti?
“अयमेव खो, आवुसो, अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, एतस्स दुक्खस्स परिञ्ञाय, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि। अयं खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अयं पटिपदा एतस्स दुक्खस्स परिञ्ञाया”ति। “भद्दको, आवुसो, मग्गो भद्दिका पटिपदा, एतस्स दुक्खस्स परिञ्ञाय। अलञ्च पनावुसो सारिपुत्त, अप्पमादाया”ति।
“Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, etassa dukkhassa pariññāya, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā etassa dukkhassa pariññāyā”ti. “Bhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā, etassa dukkhassa pariññāya. Alañca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyā”ti.
