    Kodhanasutta

    Irritable

    “सत्तिमे, भिक्खवे, धम्मा सपत्तकन्ता सपत्तकरणा कोधनं आगच्छन्ति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा। कतमे सत्त?

    “Sattime, bhikkhave, dhammā sapattakantā sapattakaraṇā kodhanaṁ āgacchanti itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā. Katame satta?

    “Bhikkhus, these seven things that please and assist an enemy happen to an irritable woman or man. What seven?

    इध, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स एवं इच्छति: ‘अहो वतायं दुब्बण्णो अस्साऽति। तं किस्स हेतु? न, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स वण्णवताय नन्दति। कोधनोयं, भिक्खवे, पुरिसपुग्गलो कोधाभिभूतो कोधपरेतो, किञ्चापि सो होति सुन्हातो सुविलित्तो कप्पितकेसमस्सु ओदातवत्थवसनो; अथ खो सो दुब्बण्णोव होति कोधाभिभूतो। अयं, भिक्खवे, पठमो धम्मो सपत्तकन्तो सपत्तकरणो कोधनं आगच्छति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा।

    Idha, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa evaṁ icchati: ‘aho vatāyaṁ dubbaṇṇo assā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Na, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa vaṇṇavatāya nandati. Kodhanoyaṁ, bhikkhave, purisapuggalo kodhābhibhūto kodhapareto, kiñcāpi so hoti sunhāto suvilitto kappitakesamassu odātavatthavasano; atha kho so dubbaṇṇova hoti kodhābhibhūto. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo dhammo sapattakanto sapattakaraṇo kodhanaṁ āgacchati itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā.

    Firstly, an enemy wishes for an enemy: ‘If only they’d become ugly!’ Why is that? Because an enemy doesn’t like to have a beautiful enemy. An irritable person, overcome and overwhelmed by anger, is ugly, even though they’re nicely bathed and anointed, with hair and beard dressed, and wearing white clothes. This is the first thing that pleases and assists an enemy which happens to an irritable woman or man.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स एवं इच्छति: ‘अहो वतायं दुक्खं सयेय्याऽति। तं किस्स हेतु? न, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स सुखसेय्याय नन्दति। कोधनोयं, भिक्खवे, पुरिसपुग्गलो कोधाभिभूतो कोधपरेतो, किञ्चापि सो पल्लङ्के सेति गोनकत्थते पटलिकत्थते कदलिमिगपवरपच्चत्थरणे सौत्तरच्छदे उभतोलोहितकूपधाने; अथ खो सो दुक्खञ्ञेव सेति कोधाभिभूतो। अयं, भिक्खवे, दुतियो धम्मो सपत्तकन्तो सपत्तकरणो कोधनं आगच्छति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa evaṁ icchati: ‘aho vatāyaṁ dukkhaṁ sayeyyā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Na, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa sukhaseyyāya nandati. Kodhanoyaṁ, bhikkhave, purisapuggalo kodhābhibhūto kodhapareto, kiñcāpi so pallaṅke seti gonakatthate paṭalikatthate kadalimigapavarapaccattharaṇe sauttaracchade ubhatolohitakūpadhāne; atha kho so dukkhaññeva seti kodhābhibhūto. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo dhammo sapattakanto sapattakaraṇo kodhanaṁ āgacchati itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā.

    Furthermore, an enemy wishes for an enemy: ‘If only they’d sleep badly!’ Why is that? Because an enemy doesn’t like to have an enemy who sleeps at ease. An irritable person, overcome and overwhelmed by anger, sleeps badly, even though they sleep on a couch spread with woolen covers—shag-piled, pure white, or embroidered with flowers—and spread with a fine deer hide, with a canopy above and red pillows at both ends.     पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स एवं इच्छति: ‘अहो वतायं न पचुरत्थो अस्साऽति। तं किस्स हेतु? न, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स पचुरत्थताय नन्दति। कोधनोयं, भिक्खवे, पुरिसपुग्गलो कोधाभिभूतो कोधपरेतो, अनत्थम्पि गहेत्वा ‘अत्थो मे गहितोऽति मञ्ञति, अत्थम्पि गहेत्वा ‘अनत्थो मे गहितोऽति मञ्ञति। तस्सिमे धम्मा अञ्ञमञ्ञं विपच्चनीका गहिता दीघरत्तं अहिताय दुक्खाय संवत्तन्ति कोधाभिभूतस्स। अयं, भिक्खवे, ततियो धम्मो सपत्तकन्तो सपत्तकरणो कोधनं आगच्छति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa evaṁ icchati: ‘aho vatāyaṁ na pacurattho assā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Na, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa pacuratthatāya nandati. Kodhanoyaṁ, bhikkhave, purisapuggalo kodhābhibhūto kodhapareto, anatthampi gahetvā ‘attho me gahito’ti maññati, atthampi gahetvā ‘anattho me gahito’ti maññati. Tassime dhammā aññamaññaṁ vipaccanīkā gahitā dīgharattaṁ ahitāya dukkhāya saṁvattanti kodhābhibhūtassa. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo dhammo sapattakanto sapattakaraṇo kodhanaṁ āgacchati itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā.

    Furthermore, an enemy wishes for an enemy: ‘If only they don’t get all they need!’ Why is that? Because an enemy doesn’t like to have an enemy who gets all they need. When an irritable person, overcome and overwhelmed by anger, gets what they don’t need they think, ‘I’ve got what I need.’ When they get what they need they think, ‘I’ve got what I don’t need.’ When an angry person gets these things that are the exact opposite of what they need, it’s for their lasting harm and suffering.     पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स एवं इच्छति: ‘अहो वतायं न भोगवा अस्साऽति। तं किस्स हेतु? न, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स भोगवताय नन्दति। कोधनस्स, भिक्खवे, पुरिसपुग्गलस्स कोधाभिभूतस्स कोधपरेतस्स, येपिस्स ते होन्ति भोगा उट्ठानवीरियाधिगता बाहाबलपरिचिता सेदावक्खित्ता धम्मिका धम्मलद्धा, तेपि राजानो राजकोसं पवेसेन्ति कोधाभिभूतस्स। अयं, भिक्खवे, चतुत्थो धम्मो सपत्तकन्तो सपत्तकरणो कोधनं आगच्छति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa evaṁ icchati: ‘aho vatāyaṁ na bhogavā assā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Na, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa bhogavatāya nandati. Kodhanassa, bhikkhave, purisapuggalassa kodhābhibhūtassa kodhaparetassa, yepissa te honti bhogā uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatā bāhābalaparicitā sedāvakkhittā dhammikā dhammaladdhā, tepi rājāno rājakosaṁ pavesenti kodhābhibhūtassa. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho dhammo sapattakanto sapattakaraṇo kodhanaṁ āgacchati itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā.

    Furthermore, an enemy wishes for an enemy: ‘If only they weren’t wealthy!’ Why is that? Because an enemy doesn’t like to have an enemy who is wealthy. When a person is irritable, overcome and overwhelmed by anger, the rulers seize the legitimate wealth they’ve earned by their efforts, built up with their own hands, gathered by the sweat of their brow.     पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स एवं इच्छति: ‘अहो वतायं न यसवा अस्साऽति। तं किस्स हेतु? न, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स यसवताय नन्दति। कोधनोयं, भिक्खवे, पुरिसपुग्गलो कोधाभिभूतो कोधपरेतो, योपिस्स सो होति यसो अप्पमादाधिगतो, तम्हापि धंसति कोधाभिभूतो। अयं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमो धम्मो सपत्तकन्तो सपत्तकरणो कोधनं आगच्छति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa evaṁ icchati: ‘aho vatāyaṁ na yasavā assā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Na, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa yasavatāya nandati. Kodhanoyaṁ, bhikkhave, purisapuggalo kodhābhibhūto kodhapareto, yopissa so hoti yaso appamādādhigato, tamhāpi dhaṁsati kodhābhibhūto. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo dhammo sapattakanto sapattakaraṇo kodhanaṁ āgacchati itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā.

    Furthermore, an enemy wishes for an enemy: ‘If only they weren’t famous!’ Why is that? Because an enemy doesn’t like to have a famous enemy. When a person is irritable, overcome and overwhelmed by anger, any fame they have acquired by diligence falls to dust. This is the fifth thing …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स एवं इच्छति: ‘अहो वतायं न मित्तवा अस्साऽति। तं किस्स हेतु? न, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स मित्तवताय नन्दति। कोधनं, भिक्खवे, पुरिसपुग्गलं कोधाभिभूतं कोधपरेतं, येपिस्स ते होन्ति मित्तामच्चा ञातिसालोहिता, तेपि आरका परिवज्जन्ति कोधाभिभूतं। अयं, भिक्खवे, छट्ठो धम्मो सपत्तकन्तो सपत्तकरणो कोधनं आगच्छति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa evaṁ icchati: ‘aho vatāyaṁ na mittavā assā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Na, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa mittavatāya nandati. Kodhanaṁ, bhikkhave, purisapuggalaṁ kodhābhibhūtaṁ kodhaparetaṁ, yepissa te honti mittāmaccā ñātisālohitā, tepi ārakā parivajjanti kodhābhibhūtaṁ. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, chaṭṭho dhammo sapattakanto sapattakaraṇo kodhanaṁ āgacchati itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā.

    Furthermore, an enemy wishes for an enemy: ‘If only they had no friends!’ Why is that? Because an enemy doesn’t like to have an enemy with friends. When a person is irritable, overcome and overwhelmed by anger, their friends and colleagues, relatives and kin avoid them from afar. This is the sixth thing …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स एवं इच्छति: ‘अहो वतायं कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जेय्याऽति। तं किस्स हेतु? न, भिक्खवे, सपत्तो सपत्तस्स सुगतिगमने नन्दति। कोधनोयं, भिक्खवे, पुरिसपुग्गलो कोधाभिभूतो कोधपरेतो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरति, वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरति, मनसा दुच्चरितं चरति। सो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरित्वा वाचाय …पे… कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जति कोधाभिभूतो। अयं, भिक्खवे, सत्तमो धम्मो सपत्तकन्तो सपत्तकरणो कोधनं आगच्छति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वा।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa evaṁ icchati: ‘aho vatāyaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjeyyā’ti. Taṁ kissa hetu? Na, bhikkhave, sapatto sapattassa sugatigamane nandati. Kodhanoyaṁ, bhikkhave, purisapuggalo kodhābhibhūto kodhapareto kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati. So kāyena duccaritaṁ caritvā vācāya …pe… kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati kodhābhibhūto. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, sattamo dhammo sapattakanto sapattakaraṇo kodhanaṁ āgacchati itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā.

    Furthermore, an enemy wishes for an enemy: ‘If only, when their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell!’ Why is that? Because an enemy doesn’t like to have an enemy who goes to a good place. When a person is irritable, overcome and overwhelmed by anger, they do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. This is the seventh thing that pleases and assists an enemy which happens to an irritable woman or man.

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, सत्त धम्मा सपत्तकन्ता सपत्तकरणा कोधनं आगच्छन्ति इत्थिं वा पुरिसं वाति।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, satta dhammā sapattakantā sapattakaraṇā kodhanaṁ āgacchanti itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vāti.

    These are the seven things that please and assist an enemy which happen to an irritable woman or man.

    कोधनो दुब्बण्णो होति, अथो दुक्खम्पि सेति सो; अथो अत्थं गहेत्वान, अनत्थं अधिपज्जति।

    Kodhano dubbaṇṇo hoti, atho dukkhampi seti so; Atho atthaṁ gahetvāna, anatthaṁ adhipajjati.

    An irritable person is ugly and they sleep badly. When they get what they need, they take it to be what they don’t need.

    ततो कायेन वाचाय, वधं कत्वान कोधनो; कोधाभिभूतो पुरिसो, धनजानिं निगच्छति।

    Tato kāyena vācāya, vadhaṁ katvāna kodhano; Kodhābhibhūto puriso, dhanajāniṁ nigacchati.

    An angry person kills with body or speech; overcome with anger, they lose their wealth.

    कोधसम्मदसम्मत्तो, आयसक्यं निगच्छति; ञातिमित्ता सुहज्जा च, परिवज्जन्ति कोधनं।

    Kodhasammadasammatto, āyasakyaṁ nigacchati; Ñātimittā suhajjā ca, parivajjanti kodhanaṁ.

    Mad with anger, they fall into disgrace. Family, friends, and loved ones avoid an irritable person.

    अनत्थजननो कोधो, कोधो चित्तप्पकोपनो; भयमन्तरतो जातं, तं जनो नावबुज्झति।

    Anatthajanano kodho, kodho cittappakopano; Bhayamantarato jātaṁ, taṁ jano nāvabujjhati.

    Anger creates harm; anger upsets the mind. That person doesn’t recognize the danger that arises within.

    कुद्धो अत्थं न जानाति, कुद्धो धम्मं न पस्सति; अन्धतमं तदा होति, यं कोधो सहते नरं।

    Kuddho atthaṁ na jānāti, kuddho dhammaṁ na passati; Andhatamaṁ tadā hoti, yaṁ kodho sahate naraṁ.

    An angry person doesn’t know the good. An angry person doesn’t see the truth. When a person is beset by anger, only blind darkness is left.

    यं कुद्धो उपरोधेति, सुकरं विय दुक्करं; पच्छा सो विगते कोधे, अग्गिदड्ढोव तप्पति।

    Yaṁ kuddho uparodheti, sukaraṁ viya dukkaraṁ; Pacchā so vigate kodhe, aggidaḍḍhova tappati.

    An angry person destroys with ease what was hard to build. Afterwards, when the anger is spent, they’re tormented as if burnt by fire.

    दुम्मङ्कुयं पदस्सेति, धूमं धूमीव पावको; यतो पतायति कोधो, येन कुज्झन्ति मानवा।

    Dummaṅkuyaṁ padasseti, dhūmaṁ dhūmīva pāvako; Yato patāyati kodho, yena kujjhanti mānavā.

    Their look betrays their sulkiness like a fire’s smoky plume. And when their anger flares up, they make others angry.

    नास्स हिरी न ओत्तप्पं, न वाचो होति गारवो; कोधेन अभिभूतस्स, न दीपं होति किञ्चनं।

    Nāssa hirī na ottappaṁ, na vāco hoti gāravo; Kodhena abhibhūtassa, na dīpaṁ hoti kiñcanaṁ.

    They have no conscience or prudence, nor any respectful speech. One overcome by anger has no island refuge anywhere.

    तपनीयानि कम्मानि, यानि धम्मेहि आरका; तानि आरोचयिस्सामि, तं सुणाथ यथा तथं।

    Tapanīyāni kammāni, yāni dhammehi ārakā; Tāni ārocayissāmi, taṁ suṇātha yathā tathaṁ.

    The deeds that torment a man are far from those that are good. I’ll explain them now; listen to this, for it is the truth.

    कुद्धो हि पितरं हन्ति, हन्ति कुद्धो समातरं; कुद्धो हि ब्राह्मणं हन्ति, हन्ति कुद्धो पुथुज्जनं।

    Kuddho hi pitaraṁ hanti, hanti kuddho samātaraṁ; Kuddho hi brāhmaṇaṁ hanti, hanti kuddho puthujjanaṁ.

    An angry person slays their father; their mother, too, they slay. An angry person slays a saint; a normal person, too, they slay.

    याय मातु भतो पोसो, इमं लोकं अवेक्खति; तम्पि पाणददिं सन्तिं, हन्ति कुद्धो पुथुज्जनो।

    Yāya mātu bhato poso, imaṁ lokaṁ avekkhati; Tampi pāṇadadiṁ santiṁ, hanti kuddho puthujjano.

    A man is raised by his mother, who shows him the world. But an angry ordinary person slays even that good woman who gave him life.

    अत्तूपमा हि ते सत्ता, अत्ता हि परमो पियो; हन्ति कुद्धो पुथुत्तानं, नानारूपेसु मुच्छितो।

    Attūpamā hi te sattā, attā hi paramo1 piyo; Hanti kuddho puthuttānaṁ, nānārūpesu mucchito.

    Like oneself, all sentient beings hold themselves most dear. But angry people kill themselves all kinds of ways, distraught for many reasons.

    असिना हन्ति अत्तानं, विसं खादन्ति मुच्छिता; रज्जुया बज्झ मीयन्ति, पब्बतामपि कन्दरे।

    Asinā hanti attānaṁ, visaṁ khādanti mucchitā; Rajjuyā bajjha mīyanti, pabbatāmapi kandare.

    Some kill themselves with swords, some, distraught, take poison. Some hang themselves with rope, or fling themselves down a mountain gorge.

    भूनहच्चानि कम्मानि, अत्तमारणियानि च; करोन्ता नावबुज्झन्ति, कोधजातो पराभवो।

    Bhūnahaccāni2 kammāni, attamāraṇiyāni ca; Karontā nāvabujjhanti, kodhajāto parābhavo.

    When they commit deeds of destroying life and killing themselves, they don’t realize what they do, for anger leads to their downfall.

    इतायं कोधरूपेन, मच्चुपासो गुहासयो; तं दमेन समुच्छिन्दे, पञ्ञावीरियेन दिट्ठिया।

    Itāyaṁ kodharūpena, maccupāso guhāsayo; Taṁ damena samucchinde, paññāvīriyena diṭṭhiyā.

    The snare of death in the form of anger lies hidden in the heart. You should cut it out by self-control, by wisdom, energy, and right ideas.

    यथा मेतं अकुसलं, समुच्छिन्देथ पण्डितो; तथेव धम्मे सिक्खेथ, मा नो दुम्मङ्कुयं अहु।

    Yathā metaṁ3 akusalaṁ, samucchindetha paṇḍito; Tatheva dhamme sikkhetha, mā no dummaṅkuyaṁ ahu.

    An astute person should cut out this unskillful thing. And they’d train in the teaching in just the same way, not yielding to sulkiness.

    वीतकोधा अनायासा, वीतलोभा अनुस्सुका; दन्ता कोधं पहन्त्वान, परिनिब्बन्ति अनासवा”ति।

    Vītakodhā anāyāsā, Vītalobhā anussukā; Dantā kodhaṁ pahantvāna, Parinibbanti anāsavā”ti.

    Free of anger, free of despair, free of greed, with no more longing, tamed, having given up anger, the undefiled become fully extinguished.

    एकादसमं।

    Ekādasamaṁ.

    अब्याकतवग्गो छट्ठो।

    Abyākatavaggo chaṭṭho.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    अब्याकतो पुरिसगति, तिस्स सीह अरक्खियं; किमिलं सत्त पचला, मेत्ता भरिया कोधेकादसाति।

    Abyākato purisagati, Tissa sīha arakkhiyaṁ; Kimilaṁ satta pacalā, Mettā bhariyā kodhekādasāti.
