With Koṭṭhita on Impermanence
अथ खो आयस्मा महाकोट्ठिको येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा कोट्ठिको भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “साधु मे, भन्ते, भगवा सङ्खित्तेन धम्मं देसेतु, यमहं भगवतो धम्मं सुत्वा एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरेय्यन्”ति।
Atha kho āyasmā mahākoṭṭhiko1 yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā koṭṭhiko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan”ti.
Then Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita went up to the Buddha … and asked him, “Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”
“यं खो, कोट्ठिक, अनिच्चं तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। किञ्च, कोट्ठिक, अनिच्चं? चक्खु खो, कोट्ठिक, अनिच्चं; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। रूपा अनिच्चा; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। चक्खुविञ्ञाणं अनिच्चं; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। चक्खुसम्फस्सो अनिच्चो; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। यम्पिदं चक्खुसम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति वेदयितं सुखं वा दुक्खं वा अदुक्खमसुखं वा तम्पि अनिच्चं; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो …पे…
“Yaṁ kho, koṭṭhika, aniccaṁ tatra te chando pahātabbo. Kiñca, koṭṭhika, aniccaṁ? Cakkhu kho, koṭṭhika, aniccaṁ; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Rūpā aniccā; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Cakkhuviññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Cakkhusamphasso anicco; tatra te chando pahātabbo. “Koṭṭhita, you should give up desire for what is impermanent. And what is impermanent? The eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact are impermanent: you should give up desire for them. The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact is also impermanent: you should give up desire for it.
जिव्हा अनिच्चा; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। रसा अनिच्चा; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। जिव्हाविञ्ञाणं अनिच्चं; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। जिव्हासम्फस्सो अनिच्चो; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। यम्पिदं जिव्हासम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति वेदयितं सुखं वा दुक्खं वा अदुक्खमसुखं वा तम्पि अनिच्चं; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो …पे… मनो अनिच्चो; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। धम्मा अनिच्चा; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। मनोविञ्ञाणं अनिच्चं; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। मनोसम्फस्सो अनिच्चो; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो। यम्पिदं मनोसम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति वेदयितं सुखं वा दुक्खं वा अदुक्खमसुखं वा तम्पि अनिच्चं; तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो।
jivhā aniccā; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Rasā aniccā; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Jivhāviññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Jivhāsamphasso anicco; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Yampidaṁ jivhāsamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aniccaṁ; tatra te chando pahātabbo …pe… mano anicco; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Dhammā aniccā; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Manoviññāṇaṁ aniccaṁ; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Manosamphasso anicco; tatra te chando pahātabbo. Yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aniccaṁ; tatra te chando pahātabbo.
The ear … nose … tongue … body … The mind, thoughts, mind consciousness, and mind contact are impermanent: you should give up desire for them. The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is also impermanent: you should give up desire for it.
यं खो, कोट्ठिक, अनिच्चं तत्र ते छन्दो पहातब्बो”ति।
Yaṁ kho, koṭṭhika, aniccaṁ tatra te chando pahātabbo”ti.
Koṭṭhita, you should give up desire for what is impermanent.”
