“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, कुम्भा। कतमे चत्तारो?
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, kumbhā. Katame cattāro?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four pots. What four?
तुच्छो पिहितो,
Tuccho pihito,
Covered but hollow,
पूरो विवटो,
pūro vivaṭo,
uncovered but full,
तुच्छो विवटो,
tuccho vivaṭo,
uncovered and hollow, and
पूरो पिहितो—
pūro pihito—
covered and full.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो कुम्भा। एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो कुम्भूपमा पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो?
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro kumbhā. Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattāro kumbhūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro?
These are the four pots. In the same way, these four people similar to pots are found in the world. What four?
तुच्छो पिहितो,
Tuccho pihito,
Covered but hollow,
पूरो विवटो,
pūro vivaṭo,
uncovered but full,
तुच्छो विवटो,
tuccho vivaṭo,
uncovered and hollow, and
पूरो पिहितो।
pūro pihito.
covered and full.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो तुच्छो होति पिहितो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स पासादिकं होति अभिक्कन्तं पटिक्कन्तं आलोकितं विलोकितं समिञ्जितं पसारितं सङ्घाटिपत्तचीवरधारणं। सो ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो तुच्छो होति पिहितो। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, कुम्भो तुच्छो पिहितो; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo tuccho hoti pihito? Idha, bhikkhave, ekaccassa puggalassa pāsādikaṁ hoti abhikkantaṁ paṭikkantaṁ ālokitaṁ vilokitaṁ samiñjitaṁ pasāritaṁ saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇaṁ. So ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo tuccho hoti pihito. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, kumbho tuccho pihito; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.
And how is a person covered but hollow? It’s when a person is impressive when going out and coming back, when looking ahead and aside, when bending and extending the limbs, and when bearing the outer robe, bowl and robes. But they don’t truly understand: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. That’s how a person is covered but hollow. That person is like a pot that’s covered but hollow, I say.
