    The Simile of the Tortoise

    “भूतपुब्बं, भिक्खवे, कुम्मो कच्छपो सायन्हसमयं अनुनदीतीरे गोचरपसुतो अहोसि। सिङ्गालोपि खो, भिक्खवे, सायन्हसमयं अनुनदीतीरे गोचरपसुतो अहोसि। अद्दसा खो, भिक्खवे, कुम्मो कच्छपो सिङ्गालं दूरतोव गोचरपसुतं। दिस्वान सोण्डिपञ्चमानि अङ्गानि सके कपाले समोदहित्वा अप्पोस्सुक्को तुण्हीभूतो सङ्कसायति।

    “Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, kummo kacchapo sāyanhasamayaṁ anunadītīre gocarapasuto ahosi. Siṅgālopi1 kho, bhikkhave, sāyanhasamayaṁ anunadītīre gocarapasuto ahosi. Addasā kho, bhikkhave, kummo kacchapo siṅgālaṁ dūratova gocarapasutaṁ. Disvāna soṇḍipañcamāni aṅgāni sake kapāle samodahitvā appossukko tuṇhībhūto saṅkasāyati.

    “Once upon a time, bhikkhus, a tortoise was grazing along the bank of a river in the afternoon. At the same time, a jackal was also hunting along the river bank. The tortoise saw the jackal off in the distance hunting, so it drew its limbs and neck inside its shell, and kept passive and silent.

    सिङ्गालोपि खो, भिक्खवे, अद्दस कुम्मं कच्छपं दूरतोव गोचरपसुतं। दिस्वान येन कुम्मो कच्छपो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा कुम्मं कच्छपं पच्चुपट्ठितो अहोसि: ‘यदायं कुम्मो कच्छपो सोण्डिपञ्चमानं अङ्गानं अञ्ञतरं वा अञ्ञतरं वा अङ्गं अभिनिन्नामेस्सति, तत्थेव नं गहेत्वा उद्दालित्वा खादिस्सामीऽति।

    Siṅgālopi kho, bhikkhave, addasa kummaṁ kacchapaṁ dūratova gocarapasutaṁ. Disvāna yena kummo kacchapo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā kummaṁ kacchapaṁ paccupaṭṭhito ahosi: ‘yadāyaṁ kummo kacchapo soṇḍipañcamānaṁ aṅgānaṁ aññataraṁ vā aññataraṁ vā aṅgaṁ abhininnāmessati, tattheva naṁ gahetvā uddālitvā khādissāmī’ti.

    But the jackal also saw the tortoise off in the distance grazing. So it went up to the tortoise and waited nearby, thinking, ‘When that tortoise sticks one or other of its limbs or neck out from its shell, I’ll grab it right there, rip it out, and eat it!’

    यदा खो, भिक्खवे, कुम्मो कच्छपो सोण्डिपञ्चमानं अङ्गानं अञ्ञतरं वा अञ्ञतरं वा अङ्गं न अभिनिन्नामि, अथ सिङ्गालो कुम्मम्हा निब्बिज्ज पक्कामि, ओतारं अलभमानो।

    Yadā kho, bhikkhave, kummo kacchapo soṇḍipañcamānaṁ aṅgānaṁ aññataraṁ vā aññataraṁ vā aṅgaṁ na abhininnāmi, atha siṅgālo kummamhā nibbijja pakkāmi, otāraṁ alabhamāno.

    But when that tortoise didn’t stick one or other of its limbs or neck out from its shell, the jackal left disappointed, since it couldn’t find a vulnerability.

    एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, तुम्हेपि मारो पापिमा सततं समितं पच्चुपट्ठितो: ‘अप्पेव नामाहं इमेसं चक्खुतो वा ओतारं लभेय्यं …पे… जिव्हातो वा ओतारं लभेय्यं …पे… मनतो वा ओतारं लभेय्यन्ऽति। तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, इन्द्रियेसु गुत्तद्वारा विहरथ।

    Evameva kho, bhikkhave, tumhepi māro pāpimā satataṁ samitaṁ paccupaṭṭhito: ‘appeva nāmāhaṁ imesaṁ cakkhuto vā otāraṁ labheyyaṁ …pe… jivhāto vā otāraṁ labheyyaṁ …pe… manato vā otāraṁ labheyyan’ti. Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, indriyesu guttadvārā viharatha.

    In the same way, Māra the Wicked is always waiting nearby, thinking: ‘Hopefully I can find a vulnerability in the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind.’ That’s why you should live with sense doors guarded.

    चक्खुना रूपं दिस्वा मा निमित्तग्गाहिनो अहुवत्थ, मा अनुब्यञ्जनग्गाहिनो। यत्वाधिकरणमेनं चक्खुन्द्रियं असंवुतं विहरन्तं अभिज्झादोमनस्सा पापका अकुसला धम्मा अन्वास्सवेय्युं, तस्स संवराय पटिपज्जथ, रक्खथ चक्खुन्द्रियं, चक्खुन्द्रिये संवरं आपज्जथ।

    Cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā mā nimittaggāhino ahuvattha, mā anubyañjanaggāhino. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ cakkhundriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjatha, rakkhatha cakkhundriyaṁ, cakkhundriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjatha.

    When you see a sight with your eyes, don’t get caught up in the features and details. If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving its restraint.

    मनसा धम्मं विञ्ञाय मा निमित्तग्गाहिनो अहुवत्थ, मा अनुब्यञ्जनग्गाहिनो। यत्वाधिकरणमेनं मनिन्द्रियं असंवुतं विहरन्तं अभिज्झादोमनस्सा पापका अकुसला धम्मा अन्वास्सवेय्युं, तस्स संवराय पटिपज्जथ, रक्खथ मनिन्द्रियं, मनिन्द्रिये संवरं आपज्जथ।

    manasā dhammaṁ viññāya mā nimittaggāhino ahuvattha, mā anubyañjanaggāhino. Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ manindriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjatha, rakkhatha manindriyaṁ, manindriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjatha.

    When you know a thought with your mind, don’t get caught up in the features and details. If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of covetousness and displeasure would become overwhelming. For this reason, practice restraint, protecting the faculty of mind, and achieving its restraint.

    यतो तुम्हे, भिक्खवे, इन्द्रियेसु गुत्तद्वारा विहरिस्सथ, अथ तुम्हेहिपि मारो पापिमा निब्बिज्ज पक्कमिस्सति, ओतारं अलभमानो—कुम्मम्हाव सिङ्गालोति।

    Yato tumhe, bhikkhave, indriyesu guttadvārā viharissatha, atha tumhehipi māro pāpimā nibbijja pakkamissati, otāraṁ alabhamāno—kummamhāva siṅgāloti.

    When you live with your sense doors guarded, Māra will leave you disappointed, since he can’t find a vulnerability, just like the jackal left the tortoise.

    कुम्मोव अङ्गानि सके कपाले, समोदहं भिक्खु मनोवितक्के; अनिस्सितो अञ्ञमहेठयानो, परिनिब्बुतो नूपवदेय्य कञ्ची”ति।

    Kummova aṅgāni sake kapāle, Samodahaṁ bhikkhu manovitakke; Anissito aññamaheṭhayāno, Parinibbuto nūpavadeyya kañcī”ti.

    A bhikkhu should collect their thoughts as a tortoise draws its limbs into its shell. Independent, not disturbing others, quenched: they wouldn’t blame anyone.”
