“तयोमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे तयो? पासाणलेखूपमो पुग्गलो, पथविलेखूपमो पुग्गलो, उदकलेखूपमो पुग्गलो।
“Tayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame tayo? Pāsāṇalekhūpamo puggalo, pathavilekhūpamo puggalo, udakalekhūpamo puggalo.
“Bhikkhus, these three people are found in the world. What three? A person like a line drawn in stone, a person like a line drawn in sand, and a person like a line drawn in water.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, पासाणलेखूपमो पुग्गलो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अभिण्हं कुज्झति। सो च ख्वस्स कोधो दीघरत्तं अनुसेति। सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, पासाणे लेखा न खिप्पं लुज्जति वातेन वा उदकेन वा, चिरट्ठितिका होति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुग्गलो अभिण्हं कुज्झति। सो च ख्वस्स कोधो दीघरत्तं अनुसेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पासाणलेखूपमो पुग्गलो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāsāṇalekhūpamo puggalo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo abhiṇhaṁ kujjhati. So ca khvassa kodho dīgharattaṁ anuseti. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, pāsāṇe lekhā na khippaṁ lujjati vātena vā udakena vā, ciraṭṭhitikā hoti; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo abhiṇhaṁ kujjhati. So ca khvassa kodho dīgharattaṁ anuseti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāsāṇalekhūpamo puggalo.
And who is the person like a line drawn in stone? It’s a person who is often angry, and their anger lingers for a long time. It’s like a line drawn in stone, which isn’t quickly worn away by wind and water, but lasts for a long time. In the same way, this person is often angry, and their anger lingers for a long time. This is called a person like a line drawn in stone.

कतमो च, भिक्खवे, उदकलेखूपमो पुग्गलो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो आगाळ्हेनपि वुच्चमानो फरुसेनपि वुच्चमानो अमनापेनपि वुच्चमानो सन्धियतिमेव संसन्दतिमेव सम्मोदतिमेव। सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, उदके लेखा खिप्पंयेव पटिविगच्छति, न चिरट्ठितिका होति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुग्गलो आगाळ्हेनपि वुच्चमानो फरुसेनपि वुच्चमानो अमनापेनपि वुच्चमानो सन्धियतिमेव संसन्दतिमेव सम्मोदतिमेव। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, उदकलेखूपमो पुग्गलो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, udakalekhūpamo puggalo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo āgāḷhenapi vuccamāno pharusenapi vuccamāno amanāpenapi vuccamāno sandhiyatimeva1 saṁsandatimeva sammodatimeva. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, udake lekhā khippaṁyeva paṭivigacchati, na ciraṭṭhitikā hoti; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo āgāḷhenapi vuccamāno pharusenapi vuccamāno amanāpenapi vuccamāno sandhiyatimeva saṁsandatimeva sammodatimeva. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, udakalekhūpamo puggalo.
And who is the person like a line drawn in water? It’s a person who, though spoken to by someone in a rough, harsh, and disagreeable manner, still stays in touch, interacts with, and greets them. It’s like a line drawn in water, which vanishes right away, and doesn’t last long. In the same way, this person, though spoken to by someone in a rough, harsh, and disagreeable manner, still stays in touch, interacts with, and greets them. This is called a person like a line drawn in water.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, तयो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
These are the three people found in the world.”
