Lipooxygenase Inhibitor
Definition 1
Any substance that inhibits lipooxygenase, an enzyme that catalyses the dioxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in lipids. Lipooxygenase is involved in the metabolism of eicosanoids (such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes) and its inhibition can suppress hypersensitivity reactions. (NCI Thesaurus)
Definition 2
Compounds or agents that combine with lipoxygenase and thereby prevent its substrate-enzyme combination with arachidonic acid and the formation of the eicosanoid products hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid and various leukotrienes. (NLM, Medical Subject Headings)
