    Lokasutta

    The World

    “लोको, भिक्खवे, तथागतेन अभिसम्बुद्धो। लोकस्मा तथागतो विसंयुत्तो। लोकसमुदयो, भिक्खवे, तथागतेन अभिसम्बुद्धो। लोकसमुदयो तथागतस्स पहीनो। लोकनिरोधो, भिक्खवे, तथागतेन अभिसम्बुद्धो। लोकनिरोधो तथागतस्स सच्छिकतो। लोकनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदा, भिक्खवे, तथागतेन अभिसम्बुद्धा। लोकनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदा तथागतस्स भाविता।

    “Loko, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddho. Lokasmā tathāgato visaṁyutto. Lokasamudayo, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddho. Lokasamudayo tathāgatassa pahīno. Lokanirodho, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddho. Lokanirodho tathāgatassa sacchikato. Lokanirodhagāminī paṭipadā, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddhā. Lokanirodhagāminī paṭipadā tathāgatassa bhāvitā.

    “Bhikkhus, the world has been understood by the Realized One; and he is detached from the world. The origin of the world has been understood by the Realized One; and he has given up the origin of the world. The cessation of the world has been understood by the Realized One; and he has realized the cessation of the world. The practice that leads to the cessation of the world has been understood by the Realized One; and he has developed the practice that leads to the cessation of the world.

    यं, भिक्खवे, सदेवकस्स लोकस्स समारकस्स सब्रह्मकस्स सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय दिट्ठं सुतं मुतं विञ्ञातं पत्तं परियेसितं अनुविचरितं मनसा, सब्बं तं तथागतेन अभिसम्बुद्धं। तस्मा ‘तथागतोऽति वुच्चति।

    Yaṁ, bhikkhave, sadevakassa lokassa samārakassa sabrahmakassa sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya diṭṭhaṁ sutaṁ mutaṁ viññātaṁ pattaṁ pariyesitaṁ anuvicaritaṁ manasā, sabbaṁ taṁ tathāgatena abhisambuddhaṁ. Tasmā ‘tathāgato’ti vuccati.

    In this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—whatever is seen, heard, thought, known, attained, sought, and explored by the mind, all that has been understood by the Realized One. That’s why he’s called the ‘Realized One’.

    यञ्च, भिक्खवे, रत्तिं तथागतो अनुत्तरं सम्मासम्बोधिं अभिसम्बुज्झति यञ्च रत्तिं अनुपादिसेसाय निब्बानधातुया परिनिब्बायति, यं एतस्मिं अन्तरे भासति लपति निद्दिसति सब्बं तं तथेव होति, नो अञ्ञथा। तस्मा ‘तथागतोऽति वुच्चति।

    Yañca, bhikkhave, rattiṁ tathāgato anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambujjhati yañca rattiṁ anupādisesāya nibbānadhātuyā parinibbāyati, yaṁ etasmiṁ antare bhāsati lapati niddisati sabbaṁ taṁ tatheva hoti, no aññathā. Tasmā ‘tathāgato’ti vuccati.

    From the night when the Realized One understands the supreme perfect awakening until the night he becomes fully extinguished—in the element of Nibbana with nothing left over—everything he speaks, says, and expresses is real, not otherwise. That’s why he’s called the ‘Realized One’.

    यथावादी, भिक्खवे, तथागतो तथाकारी, यथाकारी तथावादी। इति यथावादी तथाकारी, यथाकारी तथावादी। तस्मा ‘तथागतोऽति वुच्चति।

    Yathāvādī, bhikkhave, tathāgato tathākārī, yathākārī tathāvādī. Iti yathāvādī tathākārī, yathākārī tathāvādī. Tasmā ‘tathāgato’ti vuccati.

    The Realized One does as he says, and says as he does. Since this is so, that’s why he’s called the ‘Realized One’.

    सदेवके, भिक्खवे, लोके समारके सब्रह्मके सस्समणब्राह्मणिया पजाय सदेवमनुस्साय तथागतो अभिभू अनभिभूतो अञ्ञदत्थु दसो वसवत्ती। तस्मा ‘तथागतोऽति वुच्चति।

    Sadevake, bhikkhave, loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya tathāgato abhibhū anabhibhūto aññadatthu daso vasavattī. Tasmā ‘tathāgato’ti vuccati.

    In this world—with its gods, Māras and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humans—the Realized One is the vanquisher, the unvanquished, the universal seer, the wielder of power. That’s why he’s called the ‘Realized One’.

    सब्बं लोकं अभिञ्ञाय, सब्बं लोके यथातथं; सब्बं लोकं विसंयुत्तो, सब्बलोके अनूपयो।

    Sabbaṁ lokaṁ abhiññāya, sabbaṁ loke yathātathaṁ; Sabbaṁ lokaṁ1 visaṁyutto, sabbaloke anūpayo.

    Directly knowing the whole world as it is, and everything in it, he is detached from the whole world, disengaged from the whole world.

    स वे सब्बाभिभू धीरो, सब्बगन्थप्पमोचनो; फुट्ठऽस्स परमा सन्ति, निब्बानं अकुतोभयं।

    Sa ve sabbābhibhū dhīro, sabbaganthappamocano; Phuṭṭha’ssa paramā santi, nibbānaṁ akutobhayaṁ.

    That wise one is the champion who is released from all ties. He has reached ultimate peace: Nibbana, fearing nothing from any quarter.

    एस खीणासवो बुद्धो, अनीघो छिन्नसंसयो; सब्बकम्मक्खयं पत्तो, विमुत्तो उपधिसङ्खये।

    Esa khīṇāsavo buddho, anīgho chinnasaṁsayo; Sabbakammakkhayaṁ patto, vimutto upadhisaṅkhaye.

    He is the Buddha, with defilements ended, untroubled, with doubts cut off. He has attained the end of all deeds, freed with the end of attachments.

    एस सो भगवा बुद्धो, एस सीहो अनुत्तरो; सदेवकस्स लोकस्स, ब्रह्मचक्कं पवत्तयी।

    Esa so bhagavā buddho, esa sīho anuttaro; Sadevakassa lokassa, brahmacakkaṁ pavattayī.

    That Blessed One is the Buddha, he is the supreme lion, in all the world with its gods, he turns the holy wheel.

    इति देवा मनुस्सा च, ये बुद्धं सरणं गता; सङ्गम्म तं नमस्सन्ति, महन्तं वीतसारदं।

    Iti devā manussā ca, ye buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gatā; Saṅgamma taṁ namassanti, mahantaṁ vītasāradaṁ.

    And so those gods and humans, who have gone to the Buddha for refuge, come together and revere him, great of heart and rid of naivety:

    दन्तो दमयतं सेट्ठो, सन्तो समयतं इसि; मुत्तो मोचयतं अग्गो, तिण्णो तारयतं वरो।

    Danto damayataṁ seṭṭho, santo samayataṁ isi; Mutto mocayataṁ aggo, tiṇṇo tārayataṁ varo.

    ‘Tamed, he is the best of tamers, peaceful, he is the seer among the peaceful, liberated, he is the foremost of liberators, crossed over, he is the most excellent of guides across.’

    इति हेतं नमस्सन्ति, महन्तं वीतसारदं; सदेवकस्मिं लोकस्मिं, नत्थि मे पटिपुग्गलो”ति।

    Iti hetaṁ namassanti, mahantaṁ vītasāradaṁ; Sadevakasmiṁ lokasmiṁ, natthi me2 paṭipuggalo”ti.

    And so they revere him, great of heart and rid of naivety. In the world with its gods, he has no rival.”
