A Lump of Salt
“यो, भिक्खवे, एवं वदेय्य: ‘यथा यथायं पुरिसो कम्मं करोति तथा तथा तं पटिसंवेदियतीऽति, एवं सन्तं, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मचरियवासो न होति, ओकासो न पञ्ञायति सम्मा दुक्खस्स अन्तकिरियाय।
“Yo, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadeyya: ‘yathā yathāyaṁ puriso kammaṁ karoti tathā tathā taṁ paṭisaṁvediyatī’ti, evaṁ santaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmacariyavāso na hoti, okāso na paññāyati sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāya.
“Bhikkhus, suppose you say: ‘No matter how this person performs a deed, they experience it the same way.’ This being so, the spiritual life could not be lived, and there’d be no chance of making a complete end of suffering.
यो च खो, भिक्खवे, एवं वदेय्य: ‘यथा यथा वेदनीयं अयं पुरिसो कम्मं करोति तथा तथास्स विपाकं पटिसंवेदियतीऽति, एवं सन्तं, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मचरियवासो होति, ओकासो पञ्ञायति सम्मा दुक्खस्स अन्तकिरियाय।
Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadeyya: ‘yathā yathā vedanīyaṁ ayaṁ puriso kammaṁ karoti tathā tathāssa vipākaṁ paṭisaṁvediyatī’ti, evaṁ santaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmacariyavāso hoti, okāso paññāyati sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāya.
Suppose you say: ‘No matter how this person performs a deed, they experience the result as it should be experienced.’ This being so, the spiritual life can be lived, and there is a chance of making a complete end of suffering.
इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स अप्पमत्तकम्पि पापकम्मं कतं तमेनं निरयं उपनेति। इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं दिट्ठधम्मवेदनीयं होति, नाणुपि खायति, किं बहुदेव।
Idha, bhikkhave, ekaccassa puggalassa appamattakampi pāpakammaṁ1 kataṁ tamenaṁ nirayaṁ upaneti. Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekaccassa puggalassa tādisaṁyeva appamattakaṁ pāpakammaṁ kataṁ diṭṭhadhammavedanīyaṁ hoti, nāṇupi khāyati, kiṁ bahudeva.
Take the case of a person who does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell. Meanwhile, another person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, let alone a lot.
कथंरूपस्स, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलस्स अप्पमत्तकम्पि पापकम्मं कतं तमेनं निरयं उपनेति? इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अभावितकायो होति अभावितसीलो अभावितचित्तो अभावितपञ्ञो परित्तो अप्पातुमो अप्पदुक्खविहारी। एवरूपस्स, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलस्स अप्पमत्तकम्पि पापकम्मं कतं तमेनं निरयं उपनेति।
Kathaṁrūpassa, bhikkhave, puggalassa appamattakampi pāpakammaṁ kataṁ tamenaṁ nirayaṁ upaneti? Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo abhāvitakāyo hoti abhāvitasīlo abhāvitacitto abhāvitapañño paritto appātumo appadukkhavihārī. Evarūpassa, bhikkhave, puggalassa appamattakampi pāpakammaṁ kataṁ tamenaṁ nirayaṁ upaneti.
What kind of person does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell? A person who hasn’t developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, or wisdom. They’re small-minded and mean-spirited, living in suffering. That kind of person does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell.
कथंरूपस्स, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं दिट्ठधम्मवेदनीयं होति, नाणुपि खायति, किं बहुदेव? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो भावितकायो होति भावितसीलो भावितचित्तो भावितपञ्ञो अपरित्तो महत्तो अप्पमाणविहारी। एवरूपस्स, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं दिट्ठधम्मवेदनीयं होति, नाणुपि खायति, किं बहुदेव।
Kathaṁrūpassa, bhikkhave, puggalassa tādisaṁyeva appamattakaṁ pāpakammaṁ kataṁ diṭṭhadhammavedanīyaṁ hoti, nāṇupi khāyati, kiṁ bahudeva? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo bhāvitakāyo hoti bhāvitasīlo bhāvitacitto bhāvitapañño aparitto mahatto2 appamāṇavihārī. Evarūpassa, bhikkhave, puggalassa tādisaṁyeva appamattakaṁ pāpakammaṁ kataṁ diṭṭhadhammavedanīyaṁ hoti, nāṇupi khāyati, kiṁ bahudeva.
What kind of person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, let alone a lot? A person who has developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom. They’re not small-minded, but are big-hearted, living without limits. That kind of person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, not to speak of a lot.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो लोणकपल्लं परित्ते उदकमल्लके पक्खिपेय्य। तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु तं परित्तं उदकं अमुना लोणकपल्लेन लोणं अस्स अपेय्यन्”ति?
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso loṇakapallaṁ3 paritte udakamallake4 pakkhipeyya. Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu taṁ parittaṁ udakaṁ5 amunā loṇakapallena loṇaṁ assa apeyyan”ti?
Suppose a person was to drop a lump of salt into a small bowl of water. What do you think, bhikkhus? Would that small bowl of water become salty and undrinkable?”
“एवं, भन्ते”। “तं किस्स हेतु”? “अदुञ्हि, भन्ते, परित्तं उदककपल्लके उदकं, तं अमुना लोणकपल्लेन लोणं अस्स अपेय्यन्”ति।
“Evaṁ, bhante”. “Taṁ kissa hetu”? “Aduñhi, bhante, parittaṁ udakakapallake udakaṁ, taṁ amunā loṇakapallena loṇaṁ assa apeyyan”ti.
“Yes, sir. Why is that? Because there is only a little water in the bowl.”
“सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो लोणकपल्लकं गङ्गाय नदिया पक्खिपेय्य। तं किं मञ्ञथ, भिक्खवे, अपि नु सा गङ्गा नदी अमुना लोणकपल्लेन लोणं अस्स अपेय्या”ति?
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso loṇakapallakaṁ gaṅgāya nadiyā pakkhipeyya. Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, api nu sā gaṅgā nadī amunā loṇakapallena loṇaṁ assa apeyyā”ti?

“नो हेतं, भन्ते”। “तं किस्स हेतु”? “असु हि, भन्ते, गङ्गाय नदिया महा उदकक्खन्धो सो अमुना लोणकपल्लेन लोणो न अस्स अपेय्यो”ति।
“No hetaṁ, bhante”. “Taṁ kissa hetu”? “Asu hi, bhante, gaṅgāya nadiyā mahā udakakkhandho so amunā loṇakapallena loṇo na assa apeyyo”ti.
“No, sir. Why is that? Because the Ganges river is a vast mass of water.”
“एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स अप्पमत्तकम्पि पापकम्मं कतं तमेनं निरयं उपनेति। इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं दिट्ठधम्मवेदनीयं होति, नाणुपि खायति, किं बहुदेव।
“Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekaccassa puggalassa appamattakampi pāpakammaṁ kataṁ tamenaṁ nirayaṁ upaneti. Idha, bhikkhave, ekaccassa puggalassa tādisaṁyeva appamattakaṁ pāpakammaṁ kataṁ diṭṭhadhammavedanīyaṁ hoti, nāṇupi khāyati, kiṁ bahudeva.
“This is how it is in the case of a person who does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell. Meanwhile, another person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, not to speak of a lot. …

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco aḍḍhakahāpaṇenapi bandhanaṁ nigacchati, kahāpaṇenapi bandhanaṁ nigacchati, kahāpaṇasatenapi bandhanaṁ nigacchati. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco aḍḍhakahāpaṇenapi na bandhanaṁ nigacchati, kahāpaṇenapi na bandhanaṁ nigacchati, kahāpaṇasatenapi na bandhanaṁ nigacchati.
Take the case of a person who is thrown in jail for stealing half a dollar, a dollar, or a hundred dollars. While another person isn’t thrown in jail for stealing half a dollar, a dollar, or a hundred dollars.
कथंरूपो, भिक्खवे, अड्ढकहापणेनपि बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणेनपि बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणसतेनपि बन्धनं निगच्छति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो दलिद्दो होति अप्पस्सको अप्पभोगो। एवरूपो, भिक्खवे, अड्ढकहापणेनपि बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणेनपि बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणसतेनपि बन्धनं निगच्छति।

कथंरूपो, भिक्खवे, अड्ढकहापणेनपि न बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणेनपि न बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणसतेनपि न बन्धनं निगच्छति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अड्ढो होति महद्धनो महाभोगो। एवरूपो, भिक्खवे, अड्ढकहापणेनपि न बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणेनपि न बन्धनं निगच्छति, कहापणसतेनपि न बन्धनं निगच्छति।

एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं। तमेनं निरयं उपनेति। इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं दिट्ठधम्मवेदनीयं होति, नाणुपि खायति, किं बहुदेव।

इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो भावितकायो होति भावितसीलो भावितचित्तो भावितपञ्ञो अपरित्तो महत्तो अप्पमाणविहारी। एवरूपस्स, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं दिट्ठधम्मवेदनीयं होति, नाणुपि खायति, किं बहुदेव। सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ओरब्भिको वा उरब्भघातको वा अप्पेकच्चं उरब्भं अदिन्नं आदियमानं पहोति हन्तुं वा बन्धितुं वा जापेतुं वा यथापच्चयं वा कातुं, अप्पेकच्चं उरब्भं अदिन्नं आदियमानं नप्पहोति हन्तुं वा बन्धितुं वा जापेतुं वा यथापच्चयं वा कातुं।
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo bhāvitakāyo hoti bhāvitasīlo bhāvitacitto bhāvitapañño aparitto mahatto appamāṇavihārī. Evarūpassa, bhikkhave, puggalassa tādisaṁyeva appamattakaṁ pāpakammaṁ kataṁ diṭṭhadhammavedanīyaṁ hoti, nāṇupi khāyati, kiṁ bahudeva. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, orabbhiko vā urabbhaghātako vā appekaccaṁ urabbhaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyamānaṁ pahoti hantuṁ vā bandhituṁ vā jāpetuṁ vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā kātuṁ, appekaccaṁ urabbhaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyamānaṁ nappahoti hantuṁ vā bandhituṁ vā jāpetuṁ vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā kātuṁ.
It’s like a sheep dealer or butcher. They can execute, jail, fine, or otherwise punish one person who steals from them, but not another.
कथंरूपं, भिक्खवे, ओरब्भिको वा उरब्भघातको वा उरब्भं अदिन्नं आदियमानं पहोति हन्तुं वा बन्धितुं वा जापेतुं वा यथापच्चयं वा कातुं? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो दलिद्दो होति अप्पस्सको अप्पभोगो। एवरूपं, भिक्खवे, ओरब्भिको वा उरब्भघातको वा उरब्भं अदिन्नं आदियमानं पहोति हन्तुं वा बन्धितुं वा जापेतुं वा यथापच्चयं वा कातुं।

What kind of person can they punish? A person who is poor, with few possessions and little wealth. That’s the kind of person they can punish.
कथंरूपं, भिक्खवे, ओरब्भिको वा उरब्भघातको वा उरब्भं अदिन्नं आदियमानं नप्पहोति हन्तुं वा बन्धितुं वा जापेतुं वा यथापच्चयं वा कातुं। इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अड्ढो होति महद्धनो महाभोगो राजा वा राजमहामत्तो वा। एवरूपं, भिक्खवे, ओरब्भिको वा उरब्भघातको वा उरब्भं अदिन्नं आदियमानं नप्पहोति हन्तुं वा बन्धितुं वा जापेतुं वा यथापच्चयं वा कातुं। अञ्ञदत्थु पञ्जलिकोव नं याचति: ‘देहि मे, मारिस, उरब्भं वा उरब्भधनं वाऽति।
Kathaṁrūpaṁ, bhikkhave, orabbhiko vā urabbhaghātako vā urabbhaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyamānaṁ nappahoti hantuṁ vā bandhituṁ vā jāpetuṁ vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā kātuṁ. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco aḍḍho hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo rājā vā rājamahāmatto vā. Evarūpaṁ, bhikkhave, orabbhiko vā urabbhaghātako vā urabbhaṁ adinnaṁ ādiyamānaṁ nappahoti hantuṁ vā bandhituṁ vā jāpetuṁ vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā kātuṁ. Aññadatthu pañjalikova6 naṁ yācati: ‘dehi me, mārisa, urabbhaṁ vā urabbhadhanaṁ vā’ti.
What kind of person can’t they punish? A ruler or their minister who is rich, affluent, and wealthy. That’s the kind of person they can’t punish. In fact, all they can do is raise their joined palms and ask: ‘Please, good sir, give me my sheep or pay me for it.’
एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकम्पि पापकम्मं कतं तमेनं निरयं उपनेति। इध पन, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स तादिसंयेव अप्पमत्तकं पापकम्मं कतं दिट्ठधम्मवेदनीयं होति, नाणुपि खायति, किं बहुदेव।

This is how it is in the case of a person who does a trivial bad deed, but it lands them in hell. Meanwhile, another person does the same trivial bad deed, but experiences it in the present life, without even a bit left over, not to speak of a lot. …
कथंरूपस्स, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलस्स अप्पमत्तकम्पि पापकम्मं कतं तमेनं निरयं उपनेति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अभावितकायो होति अभावितसीलो अभावितचित्तो अभावितपञ्ञो परित्तो अप्पातुमो अप्पदुक्खविहारी। एवरूपस्स, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलस्स अप्पमत्तकम्पि पापकम्मं कतं तमेनं निरयं उपनेति।

Yo, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadeyya: ‘yathā yathāyaṁ puriso kammaṁ karoti tathā tathā taṁ paṭisaṁvedetī’ti, evaṁ santaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmacariyavāso na hoti, okāso na paññāyati sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāya.
Bhikkhus, suppose you say: ‘No matter how this person performs a deed, they experience it the same way.’ This being so, the spiritual life could not be lived, and there’d be no chance of making a complete end of suffering.
यो च खो, भिक्खवे, एवं वदेय्य: ‘यथा यथा वेदनीयं अयं पुरिसो कम्मं करोति तथा तथा तस्स विपाकं पटिसंवेदेतीऽति, एवं सन्तं, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मचरियवासो होति, ओकासो पञ्ञायति सम्मा दुक्खस्स अन्तकिरियाया”ति।
Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadeyya: ‘yathā yathā vedanīyaṁ ayaṁ puriso kammaṁ karoti tathā tathā tassa vipākaṁ paṭisaṁvedetī’ti, evaṁ santaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmacariyavāso hoti, okāso paññāyati sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāyā”ti.
Suppose you say: ‘No matter how this person performs a deed, they experience the result as it should be experienced.’ This being so, the spiritual life can be lived, and there is a chance of making a complete end of suffering.”
