    Mahācorasutta

    A Master Thief

    “तीहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो महाचोरो सन्धिम्पि छिन्दति, निल्लोपम्पि हरति, एकागारिकम्पि करोति, परिपन्थेपि तिट्ठति। कतमेहि तीहि?

    “Tīhi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato mahācoro sandhimpi chindati, nillopampi harati, ekāgārikampi karoti, paripanthepi tiṭṭhati. Katamehi tīhi?

    “Bhikkhus, a master thief with three factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery. What three?

    इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो विसमनिस्सितो च होति, गहननिस्सितो च होति, बलवनिस्सितो च होति। कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो विसमनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो नदीविदुग्गं वा निस्सितो होति पब्बतविसमं वा। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो विसमनिस्सितो होति।

    Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito ca hoti, gahananissito ca hoti, balavanissito ca hoti. Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro nadīviduggaṁ vā nissito hoti pabbatavisamaṁ vā. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito hoti.

    A master thief relies on uneven ground, on thick cover, and on powerful individuals. And how does a master thief rely on uneven ground? It’s when a master thief relies on inaccessible riverlands or rugged mountains. That’s how a master thief relies on uneven ground.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो गहननिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो तिणगहनं वा निस्सितो होति, रुक्खगहनं वा रोधं वा महावनसण्डं वा। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो गहननिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro gahananissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro tiṇagahanaṁ vā nissito hoti, rukkhagahanaṁ vā rodhaṁ1 vā mahāvanasaṇḍaṁ vā. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro gahananissito hoti.

    And how does a master thief rely on thick cover? It’s when a master thief relies on thick grass, thick trees, a ridge, or a large dense wood. That’s how a master thief relies on thick cover.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो बलवनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो राजानं वा राजमहामत्तानं वा निस्सितो होति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘सचे मं कोचि किञ्चि वक्खति, इमे मे राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणिस्सन्तीऽति। सचे नं कोचि किञ्चि आह, त्यास्स राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणन्ति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो बलवनिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro balavanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro rājānaṁ vā rājamahāmattānaṁ vā nissito hoti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ime me rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇissantī’ti. Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tyāssa rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇanti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro balavanissito hoti.

    And how does a master thief rely on powerful individuals? It’s when a master thief relies on rulers or their ministers. They think: ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, these rulers or their ministers will speak in my defense in the case.’ And that’s exactly what happens. That’s how a master thief relies on powerful individuals.

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, तीहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो महाचोरो सन्धिम्पि छिन्दति, निल्लोपम्पि हरति, एकागारिकम्पि करोति, परिपन्थेपि तिट्ठति।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, tīhi aṅgehi samannāgato mahācoro sandhimpi chindati, nillopampi harati, ekāgārikampi karoti, paripanthepi tiṭṭhati.

    A master thief with these three factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery.

    एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, तीहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो पापभिक्खु खतं उपहतं अत्तानं परिहरति, सावज्जो च होति सानुवज्जो च विञ्ञूनं, बहुञ्च अपुञ्ञं पसवति। कतमेहि तीहि?

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tīhi aṅgehi samannāgato pāpabhikkhu khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo ca viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavati. Katamehi tīhi?

    In the same way, when a bad bhikkhu has three factors, they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they make much bad karma. What three?

    इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमनिस्सितो च होति गहननिस्सितो च बलवनिस्सितो च।

    Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito ca hoti gahananissito ca balavanissito ca.

    A bad bhikkhu relies on uneven ground, on thick cover, and on powerful individuals.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमेन कायकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति, विसमेन वचीकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति, विसमेन मनोकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमनिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamena kāyakammena samannāgato hoti, visamena vacīkammena samannāgato hoti, visamena manokammena samannāgato hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito hoti.

    And how does a bad bhikkhu rely on uneven ground? It’s when a bad bhikkhu has unethical conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. That’s how a bad bhikkhu relies on uneven ground.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु गहननिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति, अन्तग्गाहिकाय दिट्ठिया समन्नागतो होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु गहननिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu gahananissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu micchādiṭṭhiko hoti, antaggāhikāya diṭṭhiyā samannāgato hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu gahananissito hoti.

    And how does a bad bhikkhu rely on thick cover? It’s when a bad bhikkhu has wrong view, he’s attached to an extremist view. That’s how a bad bhikkhu relies on thick cover.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु बलवनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु राजानं वा राजमहामत्तानं वा निस्सितो होति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘सचे मं कोचि किञ्चि वक्खति, इमे मे राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणिस्सन्तीऽति। सचे नं कोचि किञ्चि आह, त्यास्स राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणन्ति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु बलवनिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu balavanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu rājānaṁ vā rājamahāmattānaṁ vā nissito hoti.     इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, तीहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पापभिक्खु खतं उपहतं अत्तानं परिहरति, सावज्जो च होति सानुवज्जो च विञ्ञूनं, बहुञ्च अपुञ्ञं पसवती”ति।

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, tīhi dhammehi samannāgato pāpabhikkhu khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo ca viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavatī”ti.

    When a bad bhikkhu has these three qualities, they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they make much bad karma.”

    Cūḷavaggo pañcamo.

    Tassuddānaṁ

    सम्मुखी ठानत्थवसं, पवत्ति पण्डित सीलवं; सङ्खतं पब्बतातप्पं, महाचोरेनेकादसाति।

    Sammukhī ṭhānatthavasaṁ, pavatti paṇḍita sīlavaṁ; Saṅkhataṁ pabbatātappaṁ, mahācorenekādasāti.

    पठमो पण्णासको समत्तो।
