    A Master Thief

    “पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो महाचोरो सन्धिम्पि छिन्दति, निल्लोपम्पि हरति, एकागारिकम्पि करोति, परिपन्थेपि तिट्ठति। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो विसमनिस्सितो च होति, गहननिस्सितो च, बलवनिस्सितो च, भोगचागी च, एकचारी च।

    “Pañcahi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato mahācoro sandhimpi chindati, nillopampi harati, ekāgārikampi karoti, paripanthepi tiṭṭhati. Katamehi pañcahi? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito ca hoti, gahananissito ca, balavanissito ca, bhogacāgī ca, ekacārī ca.

    “Bhikkhus, a master thief with five factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery. What five? A master thief relies on rough ground, on thick cover, and on powerful individuals; they pay bribes, and they act alone.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो विसमनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो नदीविदुग्गं वा निस्सितो होति पब्बतविसमं वा। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो विसमनिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro nadīviduggaṁ vā nissito hoti pabbatavisamaṁ vā. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro visamanissito hoti.

    And how does a master thief rely on rough ground? It’s when a master thief relies on inaccessible riverlands or rugged mountains. That’s how a master thief relies on rough ground.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो गहननिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो तिणगहनं वा निस्सितो होति रुक्खगहनं वा रोधं वा महावनसण्डं वा। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो गहननिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro gahananissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro tiṇagahanaṁ vā nissito hoti rukkhagahanaṁ vā rodhaṁ1 vā mahāvanasaṇḍaṁ vā. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro gahananissito hoti.

    And how does a master thief rely on thick cover? It’s when a master thief relies on thick grass, thick trees, a blind spot, or a large dense wood. That’s how a master thief relies on thick cover.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो बलवनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो राजानं वा राजमहामत्तानं वा निस्सितो होति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘सचे मं कोचि किञ्चि वक्खति, इमे मे राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणिस्सन्तीऽति। सचे नं कोचि किञ्चि आह, त्यस्स राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणन्ति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो बलवनिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro balavanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro rājānaṁ vā rājamahāmattānaṁ vā nissito hoti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ime me rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇissantī’ti. Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tyassa rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇanti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro balavanissito hoti.

    And how does a master thief rely on powerful individuals? It’s when a master thief relies on rulers or their ministers. They think: ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, these rulers or their ministers will speak in my defense in the case.’ And that’s exactly what happens. That’s how a master thief relies on powerful individuals.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो भोगचागी होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो अड्ढो होति महद्धनो महाभोगो। तस्स एवं होति: ‘सचे मं कोचि किञ्चि वक्खति, इतो भोगेन पटिसन्थरिस्सामीऽति। सचे नं कोचि किञ्चि आह, ततो भोगेन पटिसन्थरति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो भोगचागी होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro bhogacāgī hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro aḍḍho hoti mahaddhano mahābhogo. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ito bhogena paṭisantharissāmī’ti. Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tato bhogena paṭisantharati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro bhogacāgī hoti.

    And how does a master thief pay bribes? It’s when a master thief is rich, affluent, and wealthy. They think: ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, I’ll settle it with a bribe.’ And that’s exactly what happens. That’s how a master thief pays bribes.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो एकचारी होति? इध, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो एककोव गहणानि कत्ता होति। तं किस्स हेतु? ‘मा मे गुय्हमन्ता बहिद्धा सम्भेदं अगमंसूऽति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, महाचोरो एकचारी होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, mahācoro ekacārī hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, mahācoro ekakova gahaṇāni2 kattā hoti. Taṁ kissa hetu? ‘Mā me guyhamantā bahiddhā sambhedaṁ agamaṁsū’ti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mahācoro ekacārī hoti.

    And how does a master thief act alone? It’s when a master thief carries out robbery all alone. Why is that? So that their secret plans are not leaked to others. That’s how a master thief acts alone.

    इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहङ्गेहि समन्नागतो महाचोरो सन्धिम्पि छिन्दति निल्लोपम्पि हरति एकागारिकम्पि करोति परिपन्थेपि तिट्ठति।

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahaṅgehi samannāgato mahācoro sandhimpi chindati nillopampi harati ekāgārikampi karoti paripanthepi tiṭṭhati.

    A master thief with these five factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery.

    एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पापभिक्खु खतं उपहतं अत्तानं परिहरति, सावज्जो च होति सानुवज्जो विञ्ञूनं, बहुञ्च अपुञ्ञं पसवति। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमनिस्सितो च होति, गहननिस्सितो च, बलवनिस्सितो च, भोगचागी च, एकचारी च।

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato pāpabhikkhu khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavati. Katamehi pañcahi? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito ca hoti, gahananissito ca, balavanissito ca, bhogacāgī ca, ekacārī ca.

    In the same way, when a bad bhikkhu has five qualities, they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they make much bad karma. What five? A bad bhikkhu relies on rough ground, on thick cover, and on powerful individuals; they pay bribes, and they act alone.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमेन कायकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति, विसमेन वचीकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति, विसमेन मनोकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु विसमनिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamena kāyakammena samannāgato hoti, visamena vacīkammena samannāgato hoti, visamena manokammena samannāgato hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu visamanissito hoti.

    And how does a bad bhikkhu rely on rough ground? It’s when a bad bhikkhu has unethical conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. That’s how a bad bhikkhu relies on rough ground.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु गहननिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति अन्तग्गाहिकाय दिट्ठिया समन्नागतो। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु गहननिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu gahananissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu micchādiṭṭhiko hoti antaggāhikāya diṭṭhiyā samannāgato. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu gahananissito hoti.

    And how does a bad bhikkhu rely on thick cover? It’s when a bad bhikkhu has wrong view, he’s attached to an extremist view. That’s how a bad bhikkhu relies on thick cover.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु बलवनिस्सितो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु राजानं वा राजमहामत्तानं वा निस्सितो होति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘सचे मं कोचि किञ्चि वक्खति, इमे मे राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणिस्सन्तीऽति। सचे नं कोचि किञ्चि आह, त्यस्स राजानो वा राजमहामत्ता वा परियोधाय अत्थं भणन्ति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु बलवनिस्सितो होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu balavanissito hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu rājānaṁ vā rājamahāmattānaṁ vā nissito hoti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ime me rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇissantī’ti. Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tyassa rājāno vā rājamahāmattā vā pariyodhāya atthaṁ bhaṇanti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu balavanissito hoti.

    And how does a bad bhikkhu rely on powerful individuals? It’s when a bad bhikkhu relies on rulers or their ministers. They think: ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, these rulers or their ministers will speak in my defense in the case.’ And that’s exactly what happens. That’s how a bad bhikkhu relies on powerful individuals.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु भोगचागी होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु लाभी होति चीवरपिण्डपातसेनासनगिलानप्पच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारानं। तस्स एवं होति: ‘सचे मं कोचि किञ्चि वक्खति, इतो लाभेन पटिसन्थरिस्सामीऽति। सचे नं कोचि किञ्चि आह, ततो लाभेन पटिसन्थरति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु भोगचागी होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu bhogacāgī hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu lābhī hoti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘sace maṁ koci kiñci vakkhati, ito lābhena paṭisantharissāmī’ti. Sace naṁ koci kiñci āha, tato lābhena paṭisantharati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu bhogacāgī hoti.

    And how does a bad bhikkhu pay bribes? It’s when a bad bhikkhu receives robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. They think: ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, I’ll settle it with a bribe.’ And that’s exactly what happens. That’s how a bad bhikkhu pays bribes.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु एकचारी होति? इध, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु एककोव पच्चन्तिमेसु जनपदेसु निवासं कप्पेति। सो तत्थ कुलानि उपसङ्कमन्तो लाभं लभति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पापभिक्खु एकचारी होति।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu ekacārī hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu ekakova paccantimesu janapadesu nivāsaṁ kappeti. So tattha kulāni upasaṅkamanto lābhaṁ labhati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pāpabhikkhu ekacārī hoti.

    And how does a bad bhikkhu act alone? It’s when a bad bhikkhu dwells alone in the borderlands. They visit families there to get material possessions. That’s how a bad bhikkhu acts alone.

    इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पापभिक्खु खतं उपहतं अत्तानं परिहरति, सावज्जो च होति सानुवज्जो विञ्ञूनं, बहुञ्च अपुञ्ञं पसवती”ति।

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato pāpabhikkhu khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavatī”ti.
