    With Mahākaccāna

    तत्र खो आयस्मा महाकच्चानो भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “आवुसो भिक्खवे”ति।

    Tatra kho āyasmā mahākaccāno bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti.

    There Mahākaccāna addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus!”

    “आवुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो महाकच्चानस्स पच्चस्सोसुं। आयस्मा महाकच्चानो एतदवोच:

    “Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato mahākaccānassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā mahākaccāno etadavoca:

    “Friend,” they replied. Venerable Mahākaccāna said this:

    “अच्छरियं, आवुसो; अब्भुतं, आवुसो। यावञ्चिदं तेन भगवता जानता पस्सता अरहता सम्मासम्बुद्धेन सम्बाधे ओकासाधिगमो अनुबुद्धो सत्तानं विसुद्धिया सोकपरिदेवानं समतिक्कमाय दुक्खदोमनस्सानं अत्थङ्गमाय ञायस्स अधिगमाय निब्बानस्स सच्छिकिरियाय, यदिदं छ अनुस्सतिट्ठानानि। कतमानि छ?

    “acchariyaṁ, āvuso; abbhutaṁ, āvuso. Yāvañcidaṁ tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena sambādhe okāsādhigamo anubuddho sattānaṁ visuddhiyā sokaparidevānaṁ samatikkamāya dukkhadomanassānaṁ atthaṅgamāya ñāyassa adhigamāya nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya, yadidaṁ cha anussatiṭṭhānāni. Katamāni cha?

    “It’s incredible, friends, it’s amazing! How this Blessed One who knows and sees, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, has found an opportunity amid confinement; that is, the six topics for recollection. They are in order to purify sentient beings, to get past sorrow and crying, to make an end of pain and sadness, to discover the system, and to realize Nibbana. What six?

    इधावुसो, अरियसावको तथागतं अनुस्सरति: ‘इतिपि सो भगवा …पे… सत्था देवमनुस्सानं बुद्धो भगवाऽति। यस्मिं, आवुसो, समये अरियसावको तथागतं अनुस्सरति नेवस्स तस्मिं समये रागपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न दोसपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न मोहपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति; उजुगतमेवस्स तस्मिं समये चित्तं होति, निक्खन्तं मुत्तं वुट्ठितं गेधम्हा। ‘गेधोऽति खो, आवुसो, पञ्चन्नेतं कामगुणानं अधिवचनं। स खो सो, आवुसो, अरियसावको सब्बसो आकाससमेन चेतसा विहरति विपुलेन महग्गतेन अप्पमाणेन अवेरेन अब्यापज्जेन। इदम्पि खो, आवुसो, आरम्मणं करित्वा एवम्ऽइधेकच्चे सत्ता विसुद्धिधम्मा भवन्ति।

    Idhāvuso, ariyasāvako tathāgataṁ anussarati: ‘itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti. Yasmiṁ, āvuso, samaye ariyasāvako tathāgataṁ anussarati nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti, nikkhantaṁ muttaṁ vuṭṭhitaṁ gedhamhā. ‘Gedho’ti kho, āvuso, pañcannetaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Sa kho so, āvuso, ariyasāvako sabbaso ākāsasamena cetasā viharati vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena. Idampi kho, āvuso, ārammaṇaṁ karitvā evam’idhekacce sattā visuddhidhammā bhavanti.

    Firstly, a noble disciple recollects the Realized One: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ When a noble disciple recollects the Realized One their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. At that time their mind is unswerving. They’ve left behind greed; they’re free of it and have risen above it. ‘Greed’ is a term for the five kinds of sensual stimulation. That noble disciple meditates with a heart just like space, abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will. Relying on this, some sentient beings become pure in this way.

    पुन चपरं, आवुसो, अरियसावको धम्मं अनुस्सरति: ‘स्वाक्खातो भगवता धम्मो …पे… पच्चत्तं वेदितब्बो विञ्ञूहीऽति। यस्मिं, आवुसो, समये अरियसावको धम्मं अनुस्सरति नेवस्स तस्मिं समये रागपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न दोसपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न मोहपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति; उजुगतमेवस्स तस्मिं समये चित्तं होति, निक्खन्तं मुत्तं वुट्ठितं गेधम्हा। ‘गेधोऽति खो, आवुसो, पञ्चन्नेतं कामगुणानं अधिवचनं। स खो सो, आवुसो, अरियसावको सब्बसो आकाससमेन चेतसा विहरति विपुलेन महग्गतेन अप्पमाणेन अवेरेन अब्यापज्जेन। इदम्पि खो, आवुसो, आरम्मणं करित्वा एवम्ऽइधेकच्चे सत्ता विसुद्धिधम्मा भवन्ति।

    Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, ariyasāvako dhammaṁ anussarati: ‘svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo …pe… paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti. Yasmiṁ, āvuso, samaye ariyasāvako dhammaṁ anussarati nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti, nikkhantaṁ muttaṁ vuṭṭhitaṁ gedhamhā. ‘Gedho’ti kho, āvuso, pañcannetaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Sa kho so, āvuso, ariyasāvako sabbaso ākāsasamena cetasā viharati vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena.     Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects the teaching: ‘The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’ When a noble disciple recollects the teaching their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. …

    पुन चपरं, आवुसो, अरियसावको सङ्घं अनुस्सरति: ‘सुप्पटिपन्नो भगवतो सावकसङ्घो …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्साऽति। यस्मिं, आवुसो, समये अरियसावको सङ्घं अनुस्सरति नेवस्स तस्मिं समये रागपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न दोसपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न मोहपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति; उजुगतमेवस्स तस्मिं समये चित्तं होति, निक्खन्तं मुत्तं वुट्ठितं गेधम्हा। ‘गेधोऽति खो, आवुसो, पञ्चन्नेतं कामगुणानं अधिवचनं। स खो सो, आवुसो, अरियसावको सब्बसो आकाससमेन चेतसा विहरति विपुलेन महग्गतेन अप्पमाणेन अवेरेन अब्यापज्जेन। इदम्पि खो, आवुसो, आरम्मणं करित्वा एवम्ऽइधेकच्चे सत्ता विसुद्धिधम्मा भवन्ति।

    Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, ariyasāvako saṅghaṁ anussarati: ‘suppaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti. Yasmiṁ, āvuso, samaye ariyasāvako saṅghaṁ anussarati nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti, nikkhantaṁ muttaṁ vuṭṭhitaṁ gedhamhā. ‘Gedho’ti kho, āvuso, pañcannetaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Sa kho so, āvuso, ariyasāvako sabbaso ākāsasamena cetasā viharati vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena. Idampi kho, āvuso, ārammaṇaṁ karitvā evam’idhekacce sattā visuddhidhammā bhavanti.

    Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects the Saṅgha: ‘The Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. This is the Saṅgha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’ When a noble disciple recollects the Saṅgha their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. …

    पुन चपरं, आवुसो, अरियसावको अत्तनो सीलानि अनुस्सरति अखण्डानि …पे… समाधिसंवत्तनिकानि। यस्मिं, आवुसो, समये अरियसावको अत्तनो सीलं अनुस्सरति नेवस्स तस्मिं समये रागपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न दोसपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न मोहपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति; उजुगतमेवस्स तस्मिं समये चित्तं होति, निक्खन्तं मुत्तं वुट्ठितं गेधम्हा। ‘गेधोऽति खो, आवुसो, पञ्चन्नेतं कामगुणानं अधिवचनं। स खो सो, आवुसो, अरियसावको सब्बसो आकाससमेन चेतसा विहरति विपुलेन महग्गतेन अप्पमाणेन अवेरेन अब्यापज्जेन। इदम्पि खो, आवुसो, आरम्मणं करित्वा एवम्ऽइधेकच्चे सत्ता विसुद्धिधम्मा भवन्ति।

    Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, ariyasāvako attano sīlāni anussarati akhaṇḍāni …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikāni. Yasmiṁ, āvuso, samaye ariyasāvako attano sīlaṁ anussarati nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti, nikkhantaṁ muttaṁ vuṭṭhitaṁ gedhamhā. ‘Gedho’ti kho, āvuso, pañcannetaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Sa kho so, āvuso, ariyasāvako sabbaso ākāsasamena cetasā viharati vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena. Idampi kho, āvuso, ārammaṇaṁ karitvā evam’idhekacce sattā visuddhidhammā bhavanti.

    Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects their own ethical precepts, which are unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion. When a noble disciple recollects their ethical precepts their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. …

    पुन चपरं, आवुसो, अरियसावको अत्तनो चागं अनुस्सरति: ‘लाभा वत मे, सुलद्धं वत मे …पे… याचयोगो दानसंविभागरतोऽति। यस्मिं, आवुसो, समये अरियसावको अत्तनो चागं अनुस्सरति नेवस्स तस्मिं समये रागपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न दोसपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न मोहपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति; उजुगतमेवस्स तस्मिं समये चित्तं होति, निक्खन्तं मुत्तं वुट्ठितं गेधम्हा। ‘गेधोऽति खो, आवुसो, पञ्चन्नेतं कामगुणानं अधिवचनं। स खो सो, आवुसो, अरियसावको सब्बसो आकाससमेन चेतसा विहरति विपुलेन महग्गतेन अप्पमाणेन अवेरेन अब्यापज्जेन। इदम्पि खो, आवुसो, आरम्मणं करित्वा एवम्ऽइधेकच्चे सत्ता विसुद्धिधम्मा भवन्ति।

Yasmiṁ, āvuso, samaye ariyasāvako attano cāgaṁ anussarati nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti, nikkhantaṁ muttaṁ vuṭṭhitaṁ gedhamhā. ‘Gedho’ti kho, āvuso, pañcannetaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Sa kho so, āvuso, ariyasāvako sabbaso ākāsasamena cetasā viharati vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena.     Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects their own generosity: ‘I’m so fortunate, so very fortunate! Among people full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.’ When a noble disciple recollects their own generosity their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. …

    पुन चपरं, आवुसो, अरियसावको देवता अनुस्सरति: ‘सन्ति देवा चातुमहाराजिका, सन्ति देवा …पे… ततुत्तरि। यथारूपाय सद्धाय समन्नागता ता देवता इतो चुता तत्थ उपपन्ना; मय्हम्पि तथारूपा सद्धा संविज्जति। यथारूपेन सीलेन … सुतेन … चागेन … पञ्ञाय समन्नागता ता देवता इतो चुता तत्थ उपपन्ना; मय्हम्पि तथारूपा पञ्ञा संविज्जतीऽति। यस्मिं, आवुसो, समये अरियसावको अत्तनो च तासञ्च देवतानं सद्धञ्च सीलञ्च सुतञ्च चागञ्च पञ्ञञ्च अनुस्सरति नेवस्स तस्मिं समये रागपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न दोसपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति, न मोहपरियुट्ठितं चित्तं होति; उजुगतमेवस्स तस्मिं समये चित्तं होति, निक्खन्तं मुत्तं वुट्ठितं गेधम्हा। ‘गेधोऽति खो, आवुसो, पञ्चन्नेतं कामगुणानं अधिवचनं। स खो सो, आवुसो, अरियसावको सब्बसो आकाससमेन चेतसा विहरति विपुलेन महग्गतेन अप्पमाणेन अवेरेन अब्यापज्जेन। इदम्पि खो, आवुसो, आरम्मणं करित्वा एवम्ऽइधेकच्चे सत्ता विसुद्धिधम्मा भवन्ति।

    Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, ariyasāvako devatā anussarati: ‘santi devā cātumahārājikā, santi devā …pe… tatuttari. Yathārūpāya saddhāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā; mayhampi tathārūpā saddhā saṁvijjati. Yathārūpena sīlena … sutena … cāgena … paññāya samannāgatā tā devatā ito cutā tattha upapannā; mayhampi tathārūpā paññā saṁvijjatī’ti. Yasmiṁ, āvuso, samaye ariyasāvako attano ca tāsañca devatānaṁ saddhañca sīlañca sutañca cāgañca paññañca anussarati nevassa tasmiṁ samaye rāgapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na dosapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti, na mohapariyuṭṭhitaṁ cittaṁ hoti; ujugatamevassa tasmiṁ samaye cittaṁ hoti, nikkhantaṁ muttaṁ vuṭṭhitaṁ gedhamhā. ‘Gedho’ti kho, āvuso, pañcannetaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Sa kho so, āvuso, ariyasāvako sabbaso ākāsasamena cetasā viharati vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena. Idampi kho, āvuso, ārammaṇaṁ karitvā evam’idhekacce sattā visuddhidhammā bhavanti.

    Furthermore, a noble disciple recollects the deities: ‘There are the Gods of the Four Great Kings, the Gods of the Thirty-Three, the Gods of Yama, the Joyful Gods, the Gods Who Love to Create, the Gods Who Control the Creations of Others, the Gods of Brahmā’s Host, and gods even higher than these. When those deities passed away from here, they were reborn there because of their faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. I, too, have the same kind of faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom.’ When a noble disciple recollects the faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom of both themselves and the deities their mind is not full of greed, hate, and delusion. At that time their mind is unswerving. They’ve left behind greed; they’re free of it and have risen above it. ‘Greed’ is a term for the five kinds of sensual stimulation. That noble disciple meditates with a heart just like space, abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will. Relying on this, some sentient beings become pure in this way.

    It’s incredible, friends, it’s amazing!
