Manāpadāyīsutta
Agreeable
एकं समयं भगवा वेसालियं विहरति महावने कूटागारसालायं। अथ खो भगवा पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन उग्गस्स गहपतिनो वेसालिकस्स निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ. Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena uggassa gahapatino vesālikassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the householder Ugga of Vesālī, where he sat on the seat spread out.
अथ खो उग्गो गहपति वेसालिको येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो उग्गो गहपति वेसालिको भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “सम्मुखा मेतं, भन्ते, भगवतो सुतं सम्मुखा पटिग्गहितं: ‘मनापदायी लभते मनापन्ऽति। मनापं मे, भन्ते, सालपुप्फकं खादनीयं; तं मे भगवा पटिग्गण्हातु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। पटिग्गहेसि भगवा अनुकम्पं उपादाय।
Atha kho uggo gahapati vesāliko yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho uggo gahapati vesāliko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ: ‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti. Manāpaṁ me, bhante, sālapupphakaṁ1 khādanīyaṁ; taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
Then Ugga went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha: ‘The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable.’ My sal flower porridge is agreeable: may the Buddha please accept it from me out of compassion.” So the Buddha accepted it out of compassion.
“सम्मुखा मेतं, भन्ते, भगवतो सुतं सम्मुखा पटिग्गहितं: ‘मनापदायी लभते मनापन्ऽति। मनापं मे, भन्ते, सम्पन्नकोलकं सूकरमंसं; तं मे भगवा पटिग्गण्हातु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। पटिग्गहेसि भगवा अनुकम्पं उपादाय।
“Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ: ‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti. Manāpaṁ me, bhante, sampannakolakaṁ sūkaramaṁsaṁ; taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
“Sir, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha: ‘The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable.’ My pork with jujube is agreeable: may the Buddha please accept it from me out of compassion.” So the Buddha accepted it out of compassion.
“सम्मुखा मेतं, भन्ते, भगवतो सुतं सम्मुखा पटिग्गहितं: ‘मनापदायी लभते मनापन्ऽति। मनापं मे, भन्ते, निब्बत्ततेलकं नालियसाकं; तं मे भगवा पटिग्गण्हातु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। पटिग्गहेसि भगवा अनुकम्पं उपादाय।
“Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ: ‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti. Manāpaṁ me, bhante, nibbattatelakaṁ2 nāliyasākaṁ; taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
“… My fried vegetable stalks are agreeable: may the Buddha please accept them from me out of compassion.” So the Buddha accepted them out of compassion.
“सम्मुखा मेतं, भन्ते, भगवतो सुतं सम्मुखा पटिग्गहितं: ‘मनापदायी लभते मनापन्ऽति। मनापो मे, भन्ते, सालीनं ओदनो विचितकाळको अनेकसूपो अनेकब्यञ्जनो; तं मे भगवा पटिग्गण्हातु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। पटिग्गहेसि भगवा अनुकम्पं उपादाय।
“Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ: ‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti. Manāpo me, bhante, sālīnaṁ odano vicitakāḷako3 anekasūpo anekabyañjano; taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
“… My boiled fine rice with the dark grains picked out, served with many soups and sauces is agreeable: may the Buddha please accept it from me out of compassion.” So the Buddha accepted it out of compassion.
“सम्मुखा मेतं, भन्ते, भगवतो सुतं सम्मुखा पटिग्गहितं: ‘मनापदायी लभते मनापन्ऽति। मनापानि मे, भन्ते, कासिकानि वत्थानि; तानि मे भगवा पटिग्गण्हातु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। पटिग्गहेसि भगवा अनुकम्पं उपादाय।
“Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ: ‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti. Manāpāni me, bhante, kāsikāni vatthāni; tāni me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
“… My cloths imported from Kāsi are agreeable: may the Buddha please accept them from me out of compassion.” So the Buddha accepted them out of compassion.
“सम्मुखा मेतं, भन्ते, भगवतो सुतं सम्मुखा पटिग्गहितं: ‘मनापदायी लभते मनापन्ऽति। मनापो मे, भन्ते, पल्लङ्को गोनकत्थतो पटलिकत्थतो कदलिमिगपवरपच्चत्थरणो सौत्तरच्छदो उभतोलोहितकूपधानो। अपि च, भन्ते, मयम्पेतं जानाम: ‘नेतं भगवतो कप्पतीऽति। इदं मे, भन्ते, चन्दनफलकं अग्घति अधिकसतसहस्सं; तं मे भगवा पटिग्गण्हातु अनुकम्पं उपादाया”ति। पटिग्गहेसि भगवा अनुकम्पं उपादाय।
“Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ: ‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti. Manāpo me, bhante, pallaṅko gonakatthato paṭalikatthato kadalimigapavarapaccattharaṇo4 sauttaracchado ubhatolohitakūpadhāno. Api ca, bhante, mayampetaṁ jānāma: ‘netaṁ bhagavato kappatī’ti. Idaṁ me, bhante, candanaphalakaṁ agghati adhikasatasahassaṁ; taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti. Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
“… My couch spread with woolen covers—shag-piled or embroidered with flowers—and spread with a fine deer hide, with a canopy above and red pillows at both ends is agreeable. But, sir, I know that this is not proper for the Buddha. However, this plank of sandalwood is worth over a thousand dollars. May the Buddha please accept it from me out of compassion.” So the Buddha accepted it out of compassion.
अथ खो भगवा उग्गं गहपतिं वेसालिकं इमिना अनुमोदनीयेन अनुमोदि:
Atha kho bhagavā uggaṁ gahapatiṁ vesālikaṁ iminā anumodanīyena anumodi:
And then the Buddha rejoiced with Ugga with these verses of appreciation:
“मनापदायी लभते मनापं, यो उज्जुभूतेसु ददाति छन्दसा; अच्छादनं सयनमन्नपानं, नानाप्पकारानि च पच्चयानि।
“Manāpadāyī labhate manāpaṁ, Yo ujjubhūtesu5 dadāti chandasā; Acchādanaṁ sayanamannapānaṁ, Nānāppakārāni ca paccayāni.
“The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable, enthusiastically giving clothing, bedding, food and drink, and various requisites to those of upright conduct.
चत्तञ्च मुत्तञ्च अनुग्गहीतं, खेत्तूपमे अरहन्ते विदित्वा; सो दुच्चजं सप्पुरिसो चजित्वा, मनापदायी लभते मनापन्”ति।
Cattañca muttañca anuggahītaṁ, Khettūpame arahante viditvā; So duccajaṁ sappuriso cajitvā, Manāpadāyī labhate manāpan”ti.
Knowing the perfected ones to be like a field for what’s given, offered and not held back, a good person gives what’s hard to give: the giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable.”
अथ खो भगवा उग्गं गहपतिं वेसालिकं इमिना अनुमोदनीयेन अनुमोदित्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कामि।
Atha kho bhagavā uggaṁ gahapatiṁ vesālikaṁ iminā anumodanīyena anumoditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi.
And then the Buddha, having rejoiced with Ugga with these verses of appreciation, got up from his seat and left.
अथ खो उग्गो गहपति वेसालिको अपरेन समयेन कालमकासि। कालङ्कतो च उग्गो गहपति वेसालिको अञ्ञतरं मनोमयं कायं उपपज्जि। तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।
Atha kho uggo gahapati vesāliko aparena samayena kālamakāsi. Kālaṅkato6 ca uggo gahapati vesāliko aññataraṁ manomayaṁ kāyaṁ upapajji. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
Then after some time Ugga passed away, and was reborn in a host of mind-made gods. At that time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
अथ खो उग्गो देवपुत्तो अभिक्कन्ताय रत्तिया अभिक्कन्तवण्णो केवलकप्पं जेतवनं ओभासेत्वा येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठासि। एकमन्तं ठितं खो उग्गं देवपुत्तं भगवा एतदवोच: “कच्चि ते, उग्ग, यथाधिप्पायो”ति?
Atha kho uggo devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitaṁ kho uggaṁ devaputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “kacci te, ugga, yathādhippāyo”ti?
Then, late at night, the glorious god Ugga, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Ugga, I trust it is all you wished?”
“तग्घ मे, भगवा, यथाधिप्पायो”ति। अथ खो भगवा उग्गं देवपुत्तं गाथाहि अज्झभासि:
“Taggha me, bhagavā, yathādhippāyo”ti. Atha kho bhagavā uggaṁ devaputtaṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
“Sir, it is indeed just as I wished.” Then the Buddha addressed Ugga in verse:
“मनापदायी लभते मनापं, अग्गस्स दाता लभते पुनग्गं; वरस्स दाता वरलाभि होति, सेट्ठं ददो सेट्ठमुपेति ठानं।
“Manāpadāyī labhate manāpaṁ, Aggassa dātā labhate punaggaṁ; Varassa dātā varalābhi hoti, Seṭṭhaṁ dado seṭṭhamupeti ṭhānaṁ.
“The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable, the giver of the foremost gets the foremost, the giver of the excellent gets the excellent, the giver of the best gets the best.
यो अग्गदायी वरदायी, सेट्ठदायी च यो नरो; दीघायु यसवा होति, यत्थ यत्थूपपज्जती”ति।
Yo aggadāyī varadāyī, seṭṭhadāyī ca yo naro; Dīghāyu yasavā hoti, yattha yatthūpapajjatī”ti.
A person who gives the foremost, the excellent, the best: they’re long-lived and famous wherever they’re reborn.”
