Mathematical Derivative
The rate of change of a function y with respect to an independent variable x. Graphically if y is plotted against x, this is the slope; it is measured by the quotient (delta y / delta x) of two small increments along a plot line or a curve at a selected location. The derivative is designated as dy/dx. (NCI Thesaurus)
