MC1R Protein
Definition 1
Human melanocortin 1 receptor protein (317 aa, ~34.7 kDa) is encoded by the melanocortin 1 receptor gene (MC1R). This integral membrane protein belongs to the G protein coupled receptor superfamily, and is a regulator of eumelanin and phaeomelanin production. These proteins are directly involved in pigmentation phenotypes. (NCI Thesaurus)
Definition 2
A protein found in skin and eye cells that make melanin (a pigment that gives color to the skin and helps protect it from damage by ultraviolet light). People with certain changes in the gene for MC1R have a higher risk of developing melanoma (skin cancer that begins in melanocytes). (NCI Dictionary)
