Don’t Fear Good Deeds
“मा, भिक्खवे, पुञ्ञानं भायित्थ। सुखस्सेतं, भिक्खवे, अधिवचनं यदिदं पुञ्ञानि। अभिजानामि खो पनाहं, भिक्खवे, दीघरत्तं कतानं पुञ्ञानं दीघरत्तं इट्ठं कन्तं मनापं विपाकं पच्चनुभूतं। सत्त वस्सानि मेत्तचित्तं भावेसिं। सत्त वस्सानि मेत्तचित्तं भावेत्वा सत्त संवट्टविवट्टकप्पे नयिमं लोकं पुनागमासिं। संवट्टमाने सुदाहं, भिक्खवे, लोके आभस्सरूपगो होमि, विवट्टमाने लोके सुञ्ञं ब्रह्मविमानं उपपज्जामि।
“Mā, bhikkhave, puññānaṁ bhāyittha. Sukhassetaṁ, bhikkhave, adhivacanaṁ yadidaṁ puññāni. Abhijānāmi kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, dīgharattaṁ katānaṁ puññānaṁ dīgharattaṁ iṭṭhaṁ1 kantaṁ manāpaṁ vipākaṁ paccanubhūtaṁ. Satta vassāni mettacittaṁ2 bhāvesiṁ. Satta vassāni mettacittaṁ3 bhāvetvā satta saṁvaṭṭavivaṭṭakappe nayimaṁ lokaṁ punāgamāsiṁ. Saṁvaṭṭamāne sudāhaṁ, bhikkhave, loke ābhassarūpago homi, vivaṭṭamāne loke suññaṁ brahmavimānaṁ upapajjāmi.
“Bhikkhus, don’t fear good deeds. For ‘good deeds’ is a term for happiness. I recall undergoing for a long time the likable, desirable, and agreeable results of good deeds performed over a long time. I developed a mind of love for seven years. As a result, for seven eons of the cosmos contracting and expanding I didn’t return to this world again. As the cosmos contracted I went to the realm of streaming radiance. As it expanded I was reborn in an empty mansion of Brahmā.
तत्र सुदं, भिक्खवे, ब्रह्मा होमि महाब्रह्मा अभिभू अनभिभूतो अञ्ञदत्थुदसो वसवत्ती। छत्तिंसक्खत्तुं खो पनाहं, भिक्खवे, सक्को अहोसिं देवानमिन्दो; अनेकसतक्खत्तुं राजा अहोसिं चक्कवत्ती धम्मिको धम्मराजा चातुरन्तो विजितावी जनपदत्थावरियप्पत्तो सत्तरतनसमन्नागतो। तस्स मय्हं, भिक्खवे, इमानि सत्त रतनानि अहेसुं, सेय्यथिदं—चक्करतनं, हत्थिरतनं, अस्सरतनं, मणिरतनं, इत्थिरतनं, गहपतिरतनं, परिणायकरतनमेव सत्तमं। परोसहस्सं खो पन मे, भिक्खवे, पुत्ता अहेसुं सूरा वीरङ्गरूपा परसेनप्पमद्दना। सो इमं पथविं सागरपरियन्तं अदण्डेन असत्थेन धम्मेन अभिविजिय अज्झावसिन्ति।
Tatra sudaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmā homi mahābrahmā abhibhū anabhibhūto aññadatthudaso vasavattī. Chattiṁsakkhattuṁ kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sakko ahosiṁ devānamindo; anekasatakkhattuṁ rājā ahosiṁ cakkavattī dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato. Tassa mayhaṁ, bhikkhave, imāni satta ratanāni ahesuṁ, seyyathidaṁ—cakkaratanaṁ, hatthiratanaṁ, assaratanaṁ, maṇiratanaṁ, itthiratanaṁ, gahapatiratanaṁ, pariṇāyakaratanameva sattamaṁ. Parosahassaṁ kho pana me, bhikkhave, puttā ahesuṁ sūrā vīraṅgarūpā parasenappamaddanā. So imaṁ pathaviṁ sāgarapariyantaṁ adaṇḍena asatthena dhammena abhivijiya ajjhāvasinti.
There I was Brahmā, the Great Brahmā, the vanquisher, the unvanquished, the universal seer, the wielder of power. I was Sakka, lord of gods, thirty-six times. Many hundreds of times I was a king, a wheel-turning monarch, a just and principled king. My dominion extended to all four sides, I achieved stability in the country, and I possessed the seven treasures. These were my seven treasures: the wheel, the elephant, the horse, the jewel, the woman, the treasurer, and the counselor as the seventh treasure. I had over a thousand sons who were valiant and heroic, crushing the armies of my enemies. After conquering this land girt by sea, I reigned by principle, without rod or sword.
पस्स पुञ्ञानं विपाकं, कुसलानं सुखेसिनो; मेत्तं चित्तं विभावेत्वा, सत्त वस्सानि भिक्खवो; सत्तसंवट्टविवट्टकप्पे, नयिमं लोकं पुनागमिं।
Passa puññānaṁ vipākaṁ, Kusalānaṁ sukhesino; Mettaṁ cittaṁ vibhāvetvā, Satta vassāni bhikkhavo; Sattasaṁvaṭṭavivaṭṭakappe, Nayimaṁ lokaṁ punāgamiṁ.
See the result of good deeds, of skillful deeds, for one seeking happiness. I developed a mind of love for seven years, bhikkhus. For seven eons of expansion and contraction I didn’t return to this world again.
संवट्टमाने लोकम्हि, होमि आभस्सरूपगो; विवट्टमाने लोकस्मिं, सुञ्ञब्रह्मूपगो अहुं।
Saṁvaṭṭamāne lokamhi, homi ābhassarūpago; Vivaṭṭamāne lokasmiṁ, suññabrahmūpago ahuṁ.
As the world contracted I went to the realm of streaming radiance. And when it expanded I went to an empty mansion of Brahmā.
सत्तक्खत्तुं महाब्रह्मा, वसवत्ती तदा अहुं; छत्तिंसक्खत्तुं देविन्दो, देवरज्जमकारयिं।
Sattakkhattuṁ mahābrahmā, vasavattī tadā ahuṁ; Chattiṁsakkhattuṁ devindo, devarajjamakārayiṁ.
Seven times I was a Great Brahmā, and at that time I was the wielder of power. Thirty-six times I was lord of gods, acting as ruler of the gods.
चक्कवत्ती अहुं राजा, जम्बुमण्डस्स इस्सरो; मुद्धावसित्तो खत्तियो, मनुस्साधिपती अहुं।
Then I was king, a wheel-turning monarch, ruler of all India. An anointed aristocrat, I was sovereign of all humans.
अदण्डेन असत्थेन, विजेय्य पथविं इमं; असाहसेन कम्मेन, समेन मनुसासि तं।
Adaṇḍena asatthena, vijeyya pathaviṁ imaṁ; Asāhasena kammena, samena manusāsi taṁ.
Without rod or sword, I conquered this land. Through non-violent action I guided it justly.
धम्मेन रज्जं कारेत्वा, अस्मिं पथविमण्डले; महद्धने महाभोगे, अड्ढे अजायिहं कुले।
Dhammena rajjaṁ kāretvā, asmiṁ pathavimaṇḍale; Mahaddhane mahābhoge, aḍḍhe ajāyihaṁ kule.
After ruling this vast territory by means of principle, I was born in a rich family, affluent and wealthy.
सब्बकामेहि सम्पन्ने, रतनेहि च सत्तहि; बुद्धा सङ्गाहका लोके, तेहि एतं सुदेसितं।
Sabbakāmehi sampanne, ratanehi ca sattahi; Buddhā saṅgāhakā loke, tehi etaṁ sudesitaṁ.
It was replete with all sense pleasures, and the seven treasures. This was well taught by the Buddhas, who bring the world together.
एसो हेतु महन्तस्स, पथब्यो मे न विपज्जति; पहूतवित्तूपकरणो, राजा होति पतापवा।
Eso hetu mahantassa, pathabyo me na vipajjati; Pahūtavittūpakaraṇo, rājā hoti6 patāpavā.
This is the cause of greatness by which one is called a lord of the land. I was a majestic king, with lots of property and assets.
इद्धिमा यसवा होति, जम्बुमण्डस्स इस्सरो; को सुत्वा नप्पसीदेय्य, अपि कण्हाभिजातियो।
Iddhimā yasavā hoti, jambumaṇḍassa7 issaro; Ko sutvā nappasīdeyya, api kaṇhābhijātiyo.
Successful and glorious, I was lord of India. Who would not be inspired by this, even someone of dark birth.
तस्मा हि अत्तकामेन, महत्तमभिकङ्खता; सद्धम्मो गरुकातब्बो, सरं बुद्धानसासनन्”ति।
Tasmā hi attakāmena, mahattamabhikaṅkhatā; Saddhammo garukātabbo, saraṁ buddhānasāsanan”ti.
Therefore someone who cares for their own welfare, and wants to become the very best they can be, should respect the true teaching, remembering the instructions of the Buddhas.”
