minocycline-EDTA
Pronunciation
Definition 1
A substance being studied in the prevention of bacterial infections that occur in catheters (thin tubes that carry fluids into or out of the body). It is a combination of minocycline, an antibiotic that blocks the growth of bacteria, and EDTA, a substance that keeps blood clots from forming. Minocycline-EDTA removes metals that bacteria use to form biofilms (thin layers stuck to surfaces). Also called M-EDTA. (NCI Dictionary)
Definition 2
A combination preparation containing minocycline, a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic, and ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) with antimicrobial and anticoagulant activities. Minocycline exerts its bacteriostatic effect by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit and preventing binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex during protein translation. This leads to an inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis and consequently interferes with cell growth. EDTA, a metal chelator, exerts its anticoagulant activity by binding to calcium, thereby impeding the activity of calcium-dependent coagulation proteins. This leads to an inhibition of thrombotic occlusion and prevention of bacterial colonization that could occur upon clot formation. (NCI Thesaurus)
Definition 3
A substance being studied in the treatment of bacterial infections from catheters (flexible tubes used to deliver fluids into or take fluids from the body). It combines a drug used to treat infections with a drug that prevents blood clots. It is a type of tetracycline antibiotic. (NCI Dictionary)
