Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance

Definition 1
A benign condition in which there is a higher-than-normal level of a protein called M protein in the blood. Patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance are at an increased risk of developing cancer. Also called MGUS. (NCI Dictionary)
Definition 2
A plasma cell disorder in which an abnormal amount of a single immunoglobulin is present in the serum. Up to 25% of cases of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) progress to a B-cell malignancy or myeloma. MGUS may occur in conjunction with various carcinomas, chronic inflammatory and infectious conditions, and other diseases. (NCI Thesaurus)
