Nāgasutta
A Royal Elephant
“चतूहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो नागो राजारहो होति राजभोग्गो, रञ्ञो अङ्गन्तेव सङ्खं गच्छति। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो सोता च होति, हन्ता च, खन्ता च, गन्ता च।
“Catūhi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato rañño nāgo rājāraho hoti rājabhoggo, rañño aṅganteva saṅkhaṁ gacchati. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo sotā ca hoti, hantā ca, khantā ca, gantā ca.
“Bhikkhus, a royal bull elephant with four factors is worthy of a king, fit to serve a king, and is considered a factor of kingship. What four? A royal bull elephant listens, destroys, endures, and goes fast.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो सोता होति? इध, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो यमेनं हत्थिदम्मसारथि कारणं कारेति—यदि वा कतपुब्बं यदि वा अकतपुब्बं—तं अट्ठिं कत्वा मनसि कत्वा सब्बचेतसा समन्नाहरित्वा ओहितसोतो सुणाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो सोता होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo sotā hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo yamenaṁ hatthidammasārathi kāraṇaṁ kāreti—yadi vā katapubbaṁ yadi vā akatapubbaṁ—taṁ aṭṭhiṁ katvā1 manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasoto suṇāti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo sotā hoti.
And how does a royal bull elephant listen? It’s when a royal bull elephant pays attention, applies the mind, concentrates wholeheartedly, and actively listens to whatever task the elephant trainer has it do, whether or not it has done it before. That’s how a royal bull elephant listens.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो हन्ता होति? इध, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो सङ्गामगतो हत्थिम्पि हनति, हत्थारुहम्पि हनति, अस्सम्पि हनति, अस्सारुहम्पि हनति, रथम्पि हनति, रथिकम्पि हनति, पत्तिकम्पि हनति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो हन्ता होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo hantā hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo saṅgāmagato hatthimpi hanati, hatthāruhampi hanati, assampi hanati, assāruhampi hanati, rathampi hanati, rathikampi hanati, pattikampi hanati. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo hantā hoti.
And how does a royal bull elephant destroy? It’s when a royal bull elephant in battle destroys elephants with their riders, horses with their riders, chariots and charioteers, and foot soldiers. That’s how a royal bull elephant destroys.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो खन्ता होति? इध भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो सङ्गामगतो खमो होति सत्तिप्पहारानं असिप्पहारानं उसुप्पहारानं फरसुप्पहारानं भेरिपणवसङ्खतिणवनिन्नादसद्दानं। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो खन्ता होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo khantā hoti? Idha bhikkhave, rañño nāgo saṅgāmagato khamo hoti sattippahārānaṁ asippahārānaṁ usuppahārānaṁ2 pharasuppahārānaṁ bheripaṇavasaṅkhatiṇavaninnādasaddānaṁ. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo khantā hoti.
And how does a royal bull elephant endure? It’s when a royal bull elephant in battle endures being struck by spears, swords, arrows, and axes; it endures the thunder of the drums, kettledrums, horns, and cymbals. That’s how a royal bull elephant endures.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो गन्ता होति? इध, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो यमेनं हत्थिदम्मसारथि दिसं पेसेति—यदि वा गतपुब्बं यदि वा अगतपुब्बं—तं खिप्पमेव गन्ता होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो गन्ता होति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो नागो राजारहो होति राजभोग्गो, रञ्ञो अङ्गन्तेव सङ्खं गच्छति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo gantā hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo yamenaṁ hatthidammasārathi disaṁ peseti—yadi vā gatapubbaṁ yadi vā agatapubbaṁ—taṁ khippameva3 gantā hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo gantā hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi aṅgehi samannāgato rañño nāgo rājāraho hoti rājabhoggo, rañño aṅganteva saṅkhaṁ gacchati.
And how does a royal bull elephant go fast? It’s when a royal bull elephant swiftly goes in whatever direction the elephant trainer sends it, whether or not it has been there before. That’s how a royal bull elephant goes fast. A royal bull elephant with four factors is worthy of a king, fit to serve a king, and is considered a factor of kingship.
एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो होति …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्स। कतमेहि चतूहि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सोता च होति, हन्ता च, खन्ता च, गन्ता च।
Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa. Katamehi catūhi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sotā ca hoti, hantā ca, khantā ca, gantā ca.
In the same way, a bhikkhu with four qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What four? A bhikkhu listens, destroys, endures, and goes fast.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सोता होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु तथागतप्पवेदिते धम्मविनये देसियमाने अट्ठिं कत्वा मनसि कत्वा सब्बचेतसा समन्नाहरित्वा ओहितसोतो धम्मं सुणाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सोता होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sotā hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye desiyamāne aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasoto dhammaṁ suṇāti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sotā hoti.
And how does a bhikkhu listen? It’s when a bhikkhu pays attention, applies the mind, concentrates wholeheartedly, and actively listens when the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One is being taught. That’s how a bhikkhu listens.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु हन्ता होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु उप्पन्नं कामवितक्कं नाधिवासेति पजहति विनोदेति हनति ब्यन्तीकरोति अनभावं गमेति, उप्पन्नं ब्यापादवितक्कं …पे… उप्पन्नं विहिंसावितक्कं …पे… उप्पन्नुप्पन्ने पापके अकुसले धम्मे नाधिवासेति पजहति विनोदेति हनति ब्यन्तीकरोति अनभावं गमेति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु हन्ता होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hantā hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaṁ kāmavitakkaṁ nādhivāseti pajahati vinodeti hanati byantīkaroti anabhāvaṁ gameti, uppannaṁ byāpādavitakkaṁ …pe… uppannaṁ vihiṁsāvitakkaṁ …pe… uppannuppanne pāpake akusale dhamme nādhivāseti pajahati vinodeti hanati byantīkaroti anabhāvaṁ gameti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hantā hoti.
And how does a bhikkhu destroy? It’s when a bhikkhu doesn’t tolerate a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought. They don’t tolerate any bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen, but give them up, get rid of them, eliminate them, and obliterate them. That’s how a bhikkhu destroys.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु खन्ता होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु खमो होति सीतस्स उण्हस्स जिघच्छाय पिपासाय, डंसमकसवातातपसरीसपसम्फस्सानं दुरुत्तानं दुरागतानं वचनपथानं उप्पन्नानं सारीरिकानं वेदनानं दुक्खानं तिब्बानं खरानं कटुकानं असातानं अमनापानं पाणहरानं अधिवासकजातिको होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु खन्ता होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu khantā hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu khamo hoti sītassa uṇhassa jighacchāya pipāsāya, ḍaṁsamakasavātātapasarīsapasamphassānaṁ duruttānaṁ durāgatānaṁ vacanapathānaṁ uppannānaṁ sārīrikānaṁ vedanānaṁ dukkhānaṁ tibbānaṁ kharānaṁ kaṭukānaṁ asātānaṁ amanāpānaṁ pāṇaharānaṁ adhivāsakajātiko hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu khantā hoti.
And how does a bhikkhu endure? It’s when a bhikkhu endures cold, heat, hunger, and thirst; the touch of flies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and reptiles; rude and unwelcome criticism; and they put up with physical pain—sharp, severe, acute, unpleasant, disagreeable, and life-threatening. That’s how a bhikkhu endures.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु गन्ता होति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु यायं दिसा अगतपुब्बा इमिना दीघेन अद्धुना यदिदं सब्बसङ्खारसमथो सब्बूपधिपटिनिस्सग्गो तण्हाक्खयो विरागो निरोधो निब्बानं, तं खिप्पञ्ञेव गन्ता होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु गन्ता होति। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, चतूहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो होति …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्सा”ति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu gantā hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yāyaṁ disā agatapubbā iminā dīghena addhunā yadidaṁ sabbasaṅkhārasamatho sabbūpadhipaṭinissaggo taṇhākkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbānaṁ, taṁ khippaññeva gantā hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu gantā hoti. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā”ti.
And how does a bhikkhu go fast? It’s when a bhikkhu swiftly goes in the direction they’ve never gone before in all this long time; that is, the stilling of all activities, the letting go of all attachments, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation, Nibbana. That’s how a bhikkhu goes fast. A bhikkhu with these four qualities … is the supreme field of merit for the world.”
