Nanda’s Mother
एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं आयस्मा च सारिपुत्तो आयस्मा च महामोग्गल्लानो दक्खिणागिरिस्मिं चारिकं चरन्ति महता भिक्खुसङ्घेन सद्धिं। तेन खो पन समयेन वेळुकण्डकी नन्दमाता उपासिका रत्तिया पच्चूससमयं पच्चुट्ठाय पारायनं सरेन भासति।
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno dakkhiṇāgirismiṁ cārikaṁ caranti mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ. Tena kho pana samayena veḷukaṇḍakī1 nandamātā upāsikā rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya pārāyanaṁ2 sarena bhāsati.
So I have heard. At one time the venerables Sāriputta and Mahāmoggallāna were wandering in the Southern Hills together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Now at that time the laywoman Veḷukaṇṭakī, Nanda’s mother, rose at the crack of dawn and recited the verses of “The Way to the Far Shore”.
तेन खो पन समयेन वेस्सवणो महाराजा उत्तराय दिसाय दक्खिणं दिसं गच्छति केनचिदेव करणीयेन। अस्सोसि खो वेस्सवणो महाराजा नन्दमाताय उपासिकाय पारायनं सरेन भासन्तिया, सुत्वा कथापरियोसानं आगमयमानो अट्ठासि।
Tena kho pana samayena vessavaṇo mahārājā uttarāya disāya dakkhiṇaṁ disaṁ gacchati kenacideva karaṇīyena. Assosi kho vessavaṇo mahārājā nandamātāya upāsikāya pārāyanaṁ sarena bhāsantiyā, sutvā kathāpariyosānaṁ āgamayamāno aṭṭhāsi.
And at that time the great king Vessavaṇa was on his way from the north to the south on some business. He heard Nanda’s Mother reciting, and stood waiting for her to finish.
अथ खो नन्दमाता उपासिका पारायनं सरेन भासित्वा तुण्ही अहोसि। अथ खो वेस्सवणो महाराजा नन्दमाताय उपासिकाय कथापरियोसानं विदित्वा अब्भानुमोदि: “साधु, भगिनि, साधु, भगिनी”ति।
Atha kho nandamātā upāsikā pārāyanaṁ sarena bhāsitvā tuṇhī ahosi. Atha kho vessavaṇo mahārājā nandamātāya upāsikāya kathāpariyosānaṁ viditvā abbhānumodi: “sādhu, bhagini, sādhu, bhaginī”ti.
Then when her recital was over she fell silent. Then, knowing she had finished, Vessavaṇa applauded, saying, “Good, sister! Good, sister!”
“को पनेसो, भद्रमुखा”ति?
“Ko paneso, bhadramukhā”ti?
“But who might you be, my dear?”
“अहं ते, भगिनि, भाता वेस्सवणो, महाराजा”ति।
“Ahaṁ te, bhagini, bhātā vessavaṇo, mahārājā”ti.
“Sister, I am your brother Vessavaṇa, the great king.”
“साधु, भद्रमुख, तेन हि यो मे अयं धम्मपरियायो भणितो इदं ते होतु आतिथेय्यन्”ति।
“Sādhu, bhadramukha, tena hi yo me ayaṁ dhammapariyāyo bhaṇito idaṁ te hotu ātitheyyan”ti.
“Good, my dear! Then may my recital of the teaching be my offering to you as my guest.”
“साधु, भगिनि, एतञ्चेव मे होतु आतिथेय्यं। स्वेव सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानप्पमुखो भिक्खुसङ्घो अकतपातरासो वेळुकण्डकं आगमिस्सति, तञ्च भिक्खुसङ्घं परिविसित्वा मम दक्खिणं आदिसेय्यासि। एतञ्चेव मे भविस्सति आतिथेय्यन्”ति।
“Sādhu, bhagini, etañceva me hotu ātitheyyaṁ. Sveva3 sāriputtamoggallānappamukho bhikkhusaṅgho akatapātarāso veḷukaṇḍakaṁ āgamissati, tañca bhikkhusaṅghaṁ parivisitvā mama dakkhiṇaṁ ādiseyyāsi. Etañceva4 me bhavissati ātitheyyan”ti.
‘Good, sister! And let this also be your offering to me as your guest. Tomorrow, the bhikkhu Saṅgha headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna will arrive at Veḷukaṇṭa before breakfast. When you’ve served the Saṅgha, please dedicate the religious donation to me. Then that will also be your offering to me as your guest.”
अथ खो नन्दमाता उपासिका तस्सा रत्तिया अच्चयेन सके निवेसने पणीतं खादनीयं भोजनीयं पटियादापेसि। अथ खो सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानप्पमुखो भिक्खुसङ्घो अकतपातरासो येन वेळुकण्डको तदवसरि। अथ खो नन्दमाता उपासिका अञ्ञतरं पुरिसं आमन्तेसि: “एहि त्वं, अम्भो पुरिस, आरामं गन्त्वा भिक्खुसङ्घस्स कालं आरोचेहि: ‘कालो, भन्ते, अय्याय नन्दमातुया निवेसने निट्ठितं भत्तन्ऽ”ति।
Atha kho nandamātā upāsikā tassā rattiyā accayena sake nivesane paṇītaṁ khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyaṁ paṭiyādāpesi. Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānappamukho bhikkhusaṅgho akatapātarāso yena veḷukaṇḍako tadavasari. Atha kho nandamātā upāsikā aññataraṁ purisaṁ āmantesi: “ehi tvaṁ, ambho purisa, ārāmaṁ gantvā bhikkhusaṅghassa kālaṁ ārocehi: ‘kālo, bhante, ayyāya nandamātuyā nivesane niṭṭhitaṁ bhattan’”ti.
And when the night had passed the lay woman Nanda’s Mother had delicious fresh and cooked foods prepared in her own home. Then the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna arrived at Veḷukaṇṭa. Then Nanda’s Mother addressed a man, “Please, mister, go to the monastery and announce the time to the Saṅgha, saying: ‘Sirs, it’s time. The meal is ready in the home of the lady Nanda’s Mother.’”
“एवं, अय्ये”ति खो सो पुरिसो नन्दमाताय उपासिकाय पटिस्सुत्वा आरामं गन्त्वा भिक्खुसङ्घस्स कालं आरोचेसि: “कालो, भन्ते, अय्याय नन्दमातुया निवेसने निट्ठितं भत्तन्”ति।
“Evaṁ, ayye”ti kho so puriso nandamātāya upāsikāya paṭissutvā ārāmaṁ gantvā bhikkhusaṅghassa kālaṁ ārocesi: “kālo, bhante, ayyāya nandamātuyā nivesane niṭṭhitaṁ bhattan”ti.
“Yes, Ma’am,” that man replied, and he did as she said.
अथ खो सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानप्पमुखो भिक्खुसङ्घो पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन नन्दमाताय उपासिकाय निवेसनं तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा पञ्ञत्ते आसने निसीदि। अथ खो नन्दमाता उपासिका सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानप्पमुखं भिक्खुसङ्घं पणीतेन खादनीयेन भोजनीयेन सहत्था सन्तप्पेसि सम्पवारेसि।
Atha kho sāriputtamoggallānappamukho bhikkhusaṅgho pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena nandamātāya upāsikāya nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Atha kho nandamātā upāsikā sāriputtamoggallānappamukhaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.
And then the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, went to the home of Nanda’s Mother, where they sat on the seats spread out. Then Nanda’s Mother served and satisfied them with her own hands with delicious fresh and cooked foods.
अथ खो नन्दमाता उपासिका आयस्मन्तं सारिपुत्तं भुत्ताविं ओनीतपत्तपाणिं एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो नन्दमातरं उपासिकं आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो एतदवोच: “को पन ते, नन्दमाते, भिक्खुसङ्घस्स अब्भागमनं आरोचेसी”ति?
Atha kho nandamātā upāsikā āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho nandamātaraṁ upāsikaṁ āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca: “ko pana te, nandamāte, bhikkhusaṅghassa abbhāgamanaṁ ārocesī”ti?
When Sāriputta had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, Nanda’s Mother sat down to one side. Sāriputta said to her, “Nanda’s Mother, who told you that the Saṅgha of bhikkhus was about to arrive?”
“इधाहं, भन्ते, रत्तिया पच्चूससमयं पच्चुट्ठाय पारायनं सरेन भासित्वा तुण्ही अहोसिं। अथ खो, भन्ते, वेस्सवणो महाराजा मम कथापरियोसानं विदित्वा अब्भानुमोदि: ‘साधु, भगिनि, साधु, भगिनीऽति।
“Idhāhaṁ, bhante, rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya pārāyanaṁ sarena bhāsitvā tuṇhī ahosiṁ. Atha kho, bhante, vessavaṇo mahārājā mama kathāpariyosānaṁ viditvā abbhānumodi: ‘sādhu, bhagini, sādhu, bhaginī’ti.
“Sir, last night I rose at the crack of dawn and recited the verses of ‘The Way to the Far Shore’, and then I fell silent. Then the great king Vessavaṇa, knowing I had finished, applauded me, ‘Good, sister! Good, sister!’
‘को पनेसो, भद्रमुखाऽति?
‘Ko paneso, bhadramukhā’ti?
I asked: ‘But who might you be, my dear?’
‘अहं ते, भगिनि, भाता वेस्सवणो, महाराजाऽति।
‘Ahaṁ te, bhagini, bhātā vessavaṇo, mahārājā’ti.
‘Sister, I am your brother Vessavaṇa, the great king.’
‘साधु, भद्रमुख, तेन हि यो मे अयं धम्मपरियायो भणितो इदं ते होतु आतिथेय्यन्ऽति।
‘Sādhu, bhadramukha, tena hi yo me ayaṁ dhammapariyāyo bhaṇito idaṁ te hotu ātitheyyan’ti.
‘Good, my dear! Then may my recital of the teaching be my offering to you as my guest.’
‘साधु, भगिनि, एतञ्चेव मे होतु आतिथेय्यं। स्वेव सारिपुत्तमोग्गल्लानप्पमुखो भिक्खुसङ्घो अकतपातरासो वेळुकण्डकं आगमिस्सति, तञ्च भिक्खुसङ्घं परिविसित्वा मम दक्खिणं आदिसेय्यासि। एतञ्चेव मे भविस्सति आतिथेय्यन्ऽति।
‘Sādhu, bhagini, etañceva me hotu ātitheyyaṁ. Sveva sāriputtamoggallānappamukho bhikkhusaṅgho akatapātarāso veḷukaṇḍakaṁ āgamissati, tañca bhikkhusaṅghaṁ parivisitvā mama dakkhiṇaṁ ādiseyyāsi. Etañceva5 me bhavissati ātitheyyan’ti.
‘Good, sister! And let this also be your offering to me as your guest. Tomorrow, the bhikkhu Saṅgha headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna will arrive at Veḷukaṇṭa before breakfast. When you’ve served the Saṅgha, please dedicate the religious donation to me. Then that will also be your offering to me as your guest.’
यदिदं, भन्ते, दाने पुञ्ञञ्च पुञ्ञमही च तं वेस्सवणस्स महाराजस्स सुखाय होतू”ति।
Yadidaṁ, bhante, dāne puññañca puññamahī ca taṁ6 vessavaṇassa mahārājassa sukhāya hotū”ti.
And so, sir, may the merit and the growth of merit in this gift be for the happiness of the great king Vessavaṇa.”
“अच्छरियं, नन्दमाते, अब्भुतं, नन्दमाते। यत्र हि नाम वेस्सवणेन महाराजेन एवंमहिद्धिकेन एवंमहेसक्खेन देवपुत्तेन सम्मुखा सल्लपिस्ससी”ति।
“Acchariyaṁ, nandamāte, abbhutaṁ, nandamāte. Yatra hi nāma vessavaṇena mahārājena evaṁmahiddhikena evaṁmahesakkhena devaputtena sammukhā sallapissasī”ti.
“It’s incredible, Nanda’s Mother, it’s amazing that you converse face to face with a mighty and illustrious god like the great king Vessavaṇa.”
“न खो मे, भन्ते, एसेव अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। अत्थि मे अञ्ञोपि अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। इध मे, भन्ते, नन्दो नाम एकपुत्तको पियो मनापो। तं राजानो किस्मिञ्चिदेव पकरणे ओकस्स पसय्ह जीविता वोरोपेसुं। तस्मिं खो पनाहं, भन्ते, दारके गहिते वा गय्हमाने वा वधे वा वज्झमाने वा हते वा हञ्ञमाने वा नाभिजानामि चित्तस्स अञ्ञथत्तन्”ति।
“Na kho me, bhante, eseva acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Atthi me aññopi acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Idha me, bhante, nando nāma ekaputtako piyo manāpo. Taṁ rājāno kismiñcideva pakaraṇe okassa pasayha jīvitā voropesuṁ. Tasmiṁ kho panāhaṁ, bhante, dārake gahite vā gayhamāne vā vadhe vā vajjhamāne vā hate vā haññamāne vā nābhijānāmi cittassa aññathattan”ti.
“Sir, this is not my only incredible and amazing quality; there is another. I had an only son called Nanda who I loved dearly. The rulers forcibly abducted him on some pretext and had him executed. But I can’t recall getting upset when my boy was under arrest or being arrested, imprisoned or being put in prison, killed or being killed.”
“अच्छरियं, नन्दमाते, अब्भुतं नन्दमाते। यत्र हि नाम चित्तुप्पादम्पि परिसोधेस्ससी”ति।
“Acchariyaṁ, nandamāte, abbhutaṁ nandamāte. Yatra hi nāma cittuppādampi7 parisodhessasī”ti.
“It’s incredible, Nanda’s Mother, it’s amazing that you purify even the arising of a thought.”
“न खो मे, भन्ते, एसेव अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। अत्थि मे अञ्ञोपि अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। इध मे, भन्ते, सामिको कालङ्कतो अञ्ञतरं यक्खयोनिं उपपन्नो। सो मे तेनेव पुरिमेन अत्तभावेन उद्दस्सेसि। न खो पनाहं, भन्ते, अभिजानामि ततोनिदानं चित्तस्स अञ्ञथत्तन्”ति।
“Na kho me, bhante, eseva acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Atthi me aññopi acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Idha me, bhante, sāmiko kālaṅkato aññataraṁ yakkhayoniṁ upapanno. So me teneva purimena attabhāvena uddassesi. Na kho panāhaṁ, bhante, abhijānāmi tatonidānaṁ cittassa aññathattan”ti.
“Sir, this is not my only incredible and amazing quality; there is another. When my husband passed away he was reborn in one of the realms of spirits. He revealed to me his previous life-form. But I can’t recall getting upset on that account.”
“अच्छरियं, नन्दमाते, अब्भुतं, नन्दमाते। यत्र हि नाम चित्तुप्पादम्पि परिसोधेस्ससी”ति।
“Acchariyaṁ, nandamāte, abbhutaṁ, nandamāte. Yatra hi nāma cittuppādampi parisodhessasī”ti.
“It’s incredible, Nanda’s Mother, it’s amazing that you purify even the arising of a thought.”
“न खो मे, भन्ते, एसेव अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। अत्थि मे अञ्ञोपि अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। यतोहं, भन्ते, सामिकस्स दहरस्सेव दहरा आनीता नाभिजानामि सामिकं मनसापि अतिचरिता, कुतो पन कायेना”ति।
“Na kho me, bhante, eseva acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Atthi me aññopi acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Yatohaṁ, bhante, sāmikassa daharasseva daharā ānītā nābhijānāmi sāmikaṁ manasāpi aticaritā, kuto pana kāyenā”ti.
“Sir, this is not my only incredible and amazing quality; there is another. Ever since we were both young, and I was given in marriage to my husband, I can’t recall betraying him even in thought, still less in deed.”
“अच्छरियं, नन्दमाते, अब्भुतं, नन्दमाते। यत्र हि नाम चित्तुप्पादम्पि परिसोधेस्ससी”ति।
“Acchariyaṁ, nandamāte, abbhutaṁ, nandamāte. Yatra hi nāma cittuppādampi parisodhessasī”ti.
“It’s incredible, Nanda’s Mother, it’s amazing that you purify even the arising of a thought.”
“न खो मे, भन्ते, एसेव अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। अत्थि मे अञ्ञोपि अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। यदाहं, भन्ते, उपासिका पटिदेसिता नाभिजानामि किञ्चि सिक्खापदं सञ्चिच्च वीतिक्कमिता”ति।
“Na kho me, bhante, eseva acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Atthi me aññopi acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Yadāhaṁ, bhante, upāsikā paṭidesitā nābhijānāmi kiñci sikkhāpadaṁ sañcicca vītikkamitā”ti.
“Sir, this is not my only incredible and amazing quality; there is another. Ever since I declared myself a lay follower, I can’t recall deliberately breaking any precept.”
“अच्छरियं, नन्दमाते, अब्भुतं, नन्दमाते”ति।
“Acchariyaṁ, nandamāte, abbhutaṁ, nandamāte”ti.
“It’s incredible, Nanda’s Mother, it’s amazing!”
“न खो मे, भन्ते, एसेव अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। अत्थि मे अञ्ञोपि अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। इधाहं, भन्ते, यावदे आकङ्खामि विविच्चेव कामेहि विविच्च अकुसलेहि धम्मेहि सवितक्कं सविचारं विवेकजं पीतिसुखं पठमं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरामि। वितक्कविचारानं वूपसमा अज्झत्तं सम्पसादनं चेतसो एकोदिभावं अवितक्कं अविचारं विवेकजं पीतिसुखं दुतियं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरामि। पीतिया च विरागा उपेक्खिका च विहरामि सता च सम्पजाना सुखञ्च कायेन पटिसंवेदेमि, यं तं अरिया आचिक्खन्ति: ‘उपेक्खको सतिमा सुखविहारीऽति ततियं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरामि। सुखस्स च पहाना दुक्खस्स च पहाना पुब्बेव सोमनस्सदोमनस्सानं अत्थङ्गमा अदुक्खमसुखं उपेक्खासतिपारिसुद्धिं चतुत्थं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरामी”ति।
“Na kho me, bhante, eseva acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Atthi me aññopi acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Idhāhaṁ, bhante, yāvade ākaṅkhāmi vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṁ savicāraṁ vivekajaṁ pītisukhaṁ paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharāmi. Vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā ajjhattaṁ sampasādanaṁ cetaso ekodibhāvaṁ avitakkaṁ avicāraṁ vivekajaṁ pītisukhaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharāmi. Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhikā ca viharāmi satā ca sampajānā sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṁvedemi, yaṁ taṁ ariyā ācikkhanti: ‘upekkhako satimā sukhavihārī’ti tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharāmi. Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṁ atthaṅgamā adukkhamasukhaṁ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṁ catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharāmī”ti.
“Sir, this is not my only incredible and amazing quality; there is another. Whenever I want, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, I enter and remain in the first jhāna, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected. As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, I enter and remain in the second jhāna, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected. And with the fading away of rapture, I enter and remain in the third jhāna, where I meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.’ With the giving up of pleasure and pain, and the ending of former happiness and sadness, I enter and remain in the fourth jhāna, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.”
“अच्छरियं, नन्दमाते, अब्भुतं, नन्दमाते”ति।
“Acchariyaṁ, nandamāte, abbhutaṁ, nandamāte”ti.
“It’s incredible, Nanda’s Mother, it’s amazing!”
“न खो मे, भन्ते, एसेव अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। अत्थि मे अञ्ञोपि अच्छरियो अब्भुतो धम्मो। यानिमानि, भन्ते, भगवता देसितानि पञ्चोरम्भागियानि संयोजनानि नाहं तेसं किञ्चि अत्तनि अप्पहीनं समनुपस्सामी”ति।
“Na kho me, bhante, eseva acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Atthi me aññopi acchariyo abbhuto dhammo. Yānimāni, bhante, bhagavatā desitāni pañcorambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni nāhaṁ tesaṁ kiñci attani appahīnaṁ samanupassāmī”ti.
“Sir, this is not my only incredible and amazing quality; there is another. Of the five lower fetters taught by the Buddha, I don’t see any that I haven’t given up.”
“अच्छरियं, नन्दमाते, अब्भुतं, नन्दमाते”ति।
“Acchariyaṁ, nandamāte, abbhutaṁ, nandamāte”ti.
“It’s incredible, Nanda’s Mother, it’s amazing!”
अथ खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो नन्दमातरं उपासिकं धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सेत्वा समादपेत्वा समुत्तेजेत्वा सम्पहंसेत्वा उट्ठायासना पक्कामीति।
Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto nandamātaraṁ upāsikaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmīti.
Then Venerable Sāriputta educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired Nanda’s Mother with a Dhamma talk, after which he got up from his seat and left.
