    Should Not Associate, Etc.

    “दसहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पुग्गलो न सेवितब्बो। कतमेहि दसहि? पाणातिपाती होति, अदिन्नादायी होति, कामेसुमिच्छाचारी होति, मुसावादी होति, पिसुणवाचो होति, फरुसवाचो होति, सम्फप्पलापी होति, अभिज्झालु होति, ब्यापन्नचित्तो होति, मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति—इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, दसहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पुग्गलो न सेवितब्बो।

    “Dasahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato puggalo na sevitabbo. Katamehi dasahi? Pāṇātipātī hoti, adinnādāyī hoti, kāmesumicchācārī hoti, musāvādī hoti, pisuṇavāco hoti, pharusavāco hoti, samphappalāpī hoti, abhijjhālu hoti, byāpannacitto hoti, micchādiṭṭhiko hoti—imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato puggalo na sevitabbo.

    “Bhikkhus, you should not associate with a person who has ten qualities. What ten? They kill living creatures, steal, and commit sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. You should not associate with a person who has these ten qualities.

    दसहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पुग्गलो सेवितब्बो। कतमेहि दसहि? पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो होति, अदिन्नादाना पटिविरतो होति, कामेसुमिच्छाचारा पटिविरतो होति, मुसावादा पटिविरतो होति, पिसुणाय वाचाय पटिविरतो होति, फरुसाय वाचाय पटिविरतो होति, सम्फप्पलापा पटिविरतो होति, अनभिज्झालु होति, अब्यापन्नचित्तो होति, सम्मादिट्ठिको होति—इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, दसहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पुग्गलो सेवितब्बो।

    Dasahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato puggalo sevitabbo. Katamehi dasahi? Pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato hoti, musāvādā paṭivirato hoti, pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti, anabhijjhālu hoti, abyāpannacitto hoti, sammādiṭṭhiko hoti—imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato puggalo sevitabbo.

    You should associate with a person who has ten qualities. What ten? They don’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re contented, kind-hearted, with right view. You should associate with a person who has these ten qualities.”

    दसहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पुग्गलो न भजितब्बो …पे… भजितब्बो … न पयिरुपासितब्बो … पयिरुपासितब्बो … न पुज्जो होति … पुज्जो होति … न पासंसो होति … पासंसो होति … अगारवो होति … गारवो होति … अप्पतिस्सो होति … सप्पतिस्सो होति … न आराधको होति … आराधको होति … न विसुज्झति … विसुज्झति … मानं नाधिभोति … मानं अधिभोति … पञ्ञाय न वड्ढति … पञ्ञाय वड्ढति …पे…।

    Dasahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato puggalo na bhajitabbo …pe… bhajitabbo … na payirupāsitabbo … payirupāsitabbo … na pujjo hoti … pujjo hoti … na pāsaṁso hoti … pāsaṁso hoti … agāravo hoti … gāravo hoti … appatisso hoti … sappatisso hoti … na ārādhako hoti … ārādhako hoti … na visujjhati … visujjhati … mānaṁ nādhibhoti … mānaṁ adhibhoti … paññāya na vaḍḍhati … paññāya vaḍḍhati …pe….

    “Bhikkhus, you should not frequent a person who has ten qualities. you should frequent … you should not pay homage … you should pay homage … you should not venerate … you should venerate … you should not praise … you should praise … you should not revere … you should revere … you should not defer to … you should defer to … is not a success … is a success … is not pure … is pure … does not win over conceit … wins over conceit … does not grow in wisdom … grows in wisdom …

    दसहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पुग्गलो बहुं अपुञ्ञं पसवति … बहुं पुञ्ञं पसवति। कतमेहि दसहि? पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो होति, अदिन्नादाना पटिविरतो होति, कामेसुमिच्छाचारा पटिविरतो होति, मुसावादा पटिविरतो होति, पिसुणाय वाचाय पटिविरतो होति, फरुसाय वाचाय पटिविरतो होति, सम्फप्पलापा पटिविरतो होति, अनभिज्झालु होति, अब्यापन्नचित्तो होति, सम्मादिट्ठिको होति—इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, दसहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो पुग्गलो बहुं पुञ्ञं पसवती”ति।

    Dasahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato puggalo bahuṁ apuññaṁ pasavati … bahuṁ puññaṁ pasavati. Katamehi dasahi? Pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato hoti, musāvādā paṭivirato hoti, pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti, anabhijjhālu hoti, abyāpannacitto hoti, sammādiṭṭhiko hoti—imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato puggalo bahuṁ puññaṁ pasavatī”ti.

    A person who has these ten qualities makes much bad karma. … makes much merit. What ten? They don’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re contented, kind-hearted, with right view. A person who has these ten qualities makes much merit.”

    अपरपुग्गलवग्गो पञ्चमो।

    Aparapuggalavaggo pañcamo.

    चतुत्थो पण्णासको समत्तो।
