    An Adviser for Nuns

    एकं समयं भगवा वेसालियं विहरति महावने कूटागारसालायं। अथ खो आयस्मा आनन्दो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा आनन्दो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ. Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

    “कतिहि नु खो, भन्ते, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु भिक्खुनोवादको सम्मन्नितब्बो”ति?

    “katihi nu kho, bhante, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu bhikkhunovādako sammannitabbo”ti?

    “Sir, how many qualities should a monk have to be deemed an adviser for nuns?”

    “अट्ठहि खो, आनन्द, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु भिक्खुनोवादको सम्मन्नितब्बो। कतमेहि अट्ठहि?

    “Aṭṭhahi kho, ānanda, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu bhikkhunovādako sammannitabbo. Katamehi aṭṭhahi?

    “Ānanda, a monk with eight qualities may be deemed an adviser for nuns. What eight?

    इधानन्द, भिक्खु सीलवा होति …पे… समादाय सिक्खति सिक्खापदेसु;

    Idhānanda, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu;

    Firstly, a monk is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.

    बहुस्सुतो होति …पे… दिट्ठिया सुप्पटिविद्धा;

    bahussuto hoti …pe… diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā;

    They’re learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

    उभयानि खो पनस्स पातिमोक्खानि वित्थारेन स्वागतानि होन्ति सुविभत्तानि सुप्पवत्तीनि सुविनिच्छितानि सुत्तसो अनुब्यञ्जनसो;

    ubhayāni kho panassa pātimokkhāni vitthārena svāgatāni honti suvibhattāni suppavattīni suvinicchitāni suttaso anubyañjanaso;

    Both monastic codes have been passed down to them in detail, well analyzed, well mastered, well judged in both the rules and accompanying material.

    कल्याणवाचो होति कल्याणवाक्करणो, पोरिया वाचाय समन्नागतो विस्सट्ठाय अनेलगळाय अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनिया;

    kalyāṇavāco hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo, poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya1 anelagaḷāya atthassa viññāpaniyā;

    They’re a good speaker. Their voice is polished, clear, articulate, and expresses the meaning.

    पटिबलो होति भिक्खुनिसङ्घस्स धम्मिया कथाय सन्दस्सेतुं समादपेतुं समुत्तेजेतुं सम्पहंसेतुं;

    paṭibalo hoti bhikkhunisaṅghassa dhammiyā kathāya sandassetuṁ samādapetuṁ samuttejetuṁ sampahaṁsetuṁ;

    They’re able to educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire the community of nuns.

    येभुय्येन भिक्खुनीनं पियो होति मनापो;

    yebhuyyena bhikkhunīnaṁ piyo hoti manāpo;

    They’re likable and agreeable to most of the nuns.

    न खो पनेतं भगवन्तं उद्दिस्स पब्बजिताय कासायवत्थवसनाय गरुधम्मं अज्झापन्नपुब्बो होति;

    na kho panetaṁ bhagavantaṁ uddissa pabbajitāya kāsāyavatthavasanāya garudhammaṁ ajjhāpannapubbo hoti;

    They have never previously sexually harassed any woman wearing the ocher robe who has gone forth in the Buddha’s name.

    वीसतिवस्सो वा होति अतिरेकवीसतिवस्सो वा।

    vīsativasso vā hoti atirekavīsativasso vā.

    They have been ordained for twenty years or more.

    इमेहि खो, आनन्द, अट्ठहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु भिक्खुनोवादको सम्मन्नितब्बो”ति।

    Imehi kho, ānanda, aṭṭhahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu bhikkhunovādako sammannitabbo”ti.

    A monk with these eight qualities may be deemed an adviser for nuns.”

    दुतियं।

    Dutiyaṁ.
