“चत्तारिमानि, भिक्खवे, सम्मप्पधानानि। कतमानि चत्तारि?
“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, sammappadhānāni. Katamāni cattāri?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four right efforts. What four?
इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु अनुप्पन्नानं पापकानं अकुसलानं धम्मानं अनुप्पादाय छन्दं जनेति वायमति वीरियं आरभति चित्तं पग्गण्हाति पदहति;
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaṁ pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ anuppādāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati;
A bhikkhu generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise.
उप्पन्नानं पापकानं अकुसलानं धम्मानं पहानाय छन्दं जनेति वायमति वीरियं आरभति चित्तं पग्गण्हाति पदहति;
uppannānaṁ pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahānāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati;
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.
अनुप्पन्नानं कुसलानं धम्मानं उप्पादाय छन्दं जनेति वायमति वीरियं आरभति चित्तं पग्गण्हाति पदहति;
anuppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ uppādāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati;
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.
uppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripūriyā chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vīriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati.
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are fulfilled by development.
इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारि सम्मप्पधानानीति।
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri sammappadhānānīti.
These are the four right efforts.
Sammappadhānā māradheyyābhibhūtā, Te asitā jātimaraṇabhayassa pāragū; Te tusitā jetvā māraṁ savāhiniṁ1 te anejā, Sabbaṁ namucibalaṁ upātivattā te sukhitā”ti.
By rightly striving,
they’ve crushed Māra’s sovereignty; unattached, they’ve gone beyondthe peril of birth and death. Contented and unstirred,they’ve vanquished Māra and his mount; now they’ve gone beyond all Namuci’s forces,they’re happy.”
ततियं।
