Giving Up
“तिस्सो इमा, भिक्खवे, वेदना। कतमा तिस्सो?
“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, vedanā. Katamā tisso?
“Bhikkhus, there are these three feelings. What three?
सुखा वेदना, दुक्खा वेदना, अदुक्खमसुखा वेदना।
Sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanā.
Pleasant, painful, and neutral feeling.
सुखाय, भिक्खवे, वेदनाय रागानुसयो पहातब्बो, दुक्खाय वेदनाय पटिघानुसयो पहातब्बो, अदुक्खमसुखाय वेदनाय अविज्जानुसयो पहातब्बो।
Sukhāya, bhikkhave, vedanāya rāgānusayo pahātabbo, dukkhāya vedanāya paṭighānusayo pahātabbo, adukkhamasukhāya vedanāya avijjānusayo pahātabbo.
The underlying tendency to greed should be given up when it comes to pleasant feeling. The underlying tendency to repulsion should be given up when it comes to painful feeling. The underlying tendency to ignorance should be given up when it comes to neutral feeling.
यतो खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो सुखाय वेदनाय रागानुसयो पहीनो होति, दुक्खाय वेदनाय पटिघानुसयो पहीनो होति, अदुक्खमसुखाय वेदनाय अविज्जानुसयो पहीनो होति, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, ‘भिक्खु निरनुसयो सम्मद्दसो अच्छेच्छि तण्हं, विवत्तयि संयोजनं, सम्मा मानाभिसमया अन्तमकासि दुक्खस्साऽति।
Yato kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno sukhāya vedanāya rāgānusayo pahīno hoti, dukkhāya vedanāya paṭighānusayo pahīno hoti, adukkhamasukhāya vedanāya avijjānusayo pahīno hoti, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ‘bhikkhu niranusayo sammaddaso acchecchi1 taṇhaṁ, vivattayi saṁyojanaṁ, sammā mānābhisamayā antamakāsi dukkhassā’ti.
When a bhikkhu has given up these underlying tendencies, they’re called a bhikkhu without underlying tendencies, who sees rightly, has cut off craving, untied the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit has made an end of suffering.
सुखं वेदयमानस्स, वेदनं अप्पजानतो; सो रागानुसयो होति, अनिस्सरणदस्सिनो।
Sukhaṁ vedayamānassa, vedanaṁ appajānato; So rāgānusayo hoti, anissaraṇadassino.
When you feel pleasure without understanding feeling, the underlying tendency to greed is there, if you don’t see the escape.
दुक्खं वेदयमानस्स, वेदनं अप्पजानतो; पटिघानुसयो होति, अनिस्सरणदस्सिनो।
Dukkhaṁ vedayamānassa, vedanaṁ appajānato; Paṭighānusayo hoti, anissaraṇadassino.
When you feel pain without understanding feeling, the underlying tendency to repulsion is there, if you don’t see the escape.
अदुक्खमसुखं सन्तं, भूरिपञ्ञेन देसितं; तञ्चापि अभिनन्दति, नेव दुक्खा पमुच्चति।
Adukkhamasukhaṁ santaṁ, bhūripaññena desitaṁ; Tañcāpi abhinandati, neva dukkhā pamuccati.
As for that peaceful, neutral feeling: he of vast wisdom has taught that if you relish it, you’re still not released from suffering.
यतो च भिक्खु आतापी, सम्पजञ्ञं न रिञ्चति; ततो सो वेदना सब्बा, परिजानाति पण्डितो।
Yato ca bhikkhu ātāpī, sampajaññaṁ na riñcati; Tato so vedanā sabbā, parijānāti paṇḍito.
But when a bhikkhu is keen, not neglecting situational awareness, that astute person understands all feelings.
सो वेदना परिञ्ञाय, दिट्ठे धम्मे अनासवो; कायस्स भेदा धम्मट्ठो, सङ्ख्यं नोपेति वेदगू”ति।
So vedanā pariññāya, diṭṭhe dhamme anāsavo; Kāyassa bhedā dhammaṭṭho, saṅkhyaṁ nopeti vedagū”ti.
Completely understanding feelings, they’re without defilements in this very life. That knowledge master is firm in principle; when their body breaks up, they can’t be reckoned.”
