    Five Factors

“Pañcaṅgavippahīno, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato imasmiṁ dhammavinaye ‘kevalī vusitavā uttamapuriso’ti vuccati.

“Bhikkhus, in this teaching and training a bhikkhu who has given up five factors and possesses five factors is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgavippahīno hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kāmacchando pahīno hoti, byāpādo pahīno hoti, thinamiddhaṁ1 pahīnaṁ hoti, uddhaccakukkuccaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti, vicikicchā pahīnā hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgavippahīno hoti.

And how has a bhikkhu given up five factors? It’s when a bhikkhu has given up sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. That’s how a bhikkhu has given up five factors.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato hoti.

And how does a bhikkhu have five factors? It’s when a bhikkhu has the entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and knowledge and vision of freedom. That’s how a bhikkhu has five factors.

Pañcaṅgavippahīno kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pañcaṅgasamannāgato imasmiṁ dhammavinaye ‘kevalī vusitavā uttamapuriso’ti vuccati.

In this teaching and training a bhikkhu who has given up five factors and possesses five factors is called consummate, accomplished, a supreme person.

Kāmacchando ca byāpādo, thinamiddhañca bhikkhuno; Uddhaccaṁ vicikicchā ca, sabbasova na vijjati.

Sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness, and doubt are not found in a bhikkhu at all.

Asekhena ca sīlena, asekhena samādhinā; Vimuttiyā ca sampanno, ñāṇena ca tathāvidho.

One like this is accomplished in an adept’s ethics, an adept’s immersion, and freedom and knowledge.

Possessing these five factors, and rid of five factors, in this teaching and training they’re called ‘consummate’.”

    Dutiyaṁ.
