Ways of Answering Questions
“चत्तारिमानि, भिक्खवे, पञ्हब्याकरणानि। कतमानि चत्तारि? अत्थि, भिक्खवे, पञ्हो एकंसब्याकरणीयो; अत्थि, भिक्खवे, पञ्हो विभज्जब्याकरणीयो; अत्थि, भिक्खवे, पञ्हो पटिपुच्छाब्याकरणीयो; अत्थि, भिक्खवे, पञ्हो ठपनीयो।
“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, pañhabyākaraṇāni. Katamāni cattāri? Atthi, bhikkhave, pañho ekaṁsabyākaraṇīyo; atthi, bhikkhave, pañho vibhajjabyākaraṇīyo; atthi, bhikkhave, pañho paṭipucchābyākaraṇīyo; atthi, bhikkhave, pañho ṭhapanīyo.
“Bhikkhus, there are these four ways of answering questions. What four? There is a question that should be answered definitively. There is a question that should be answered analytically. There is a question that should be answered with a counter-question. There is a question that should be set aside.
इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारि पञ्हब्याकरणानीति।
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri pañhabyākaraṇānīti.
These are the four ways of answering questions.
एकंसवचनं एकं, विभज्जवचनापरं; ततियं पटिपुच्छेय्य, चतुत्थं पन ठापये।
Ekaṁsavacanaṁ ekaṁ, vibhajjavacanāparaṁ; Tatiyaṁ paṭipuccheyya, catutthaṁ pana ṭhāpaye.
One is stated definitively, another analytically, a third with a counter-question, while a fourth is set aside.
यो च तेसं तत्थ तत्थ, जानाति अनुधम्मतं; चतुपञ्हस्स कुसलो, आहु भिक्खुं तथाविधं।
Yo ca tesaṁ1 tattha tattha, jānāti anudhammataṁ; Catupañhassa kusalo, āhu bhikkhuṁ tathāvidhaṁ.
A bhikkhu who knows each of these, in line with good principles, is said to be skilled in the four kinds of questions.
दुरासदो दुप्पसहो, गम्भीरो दुप्पधंसियो; अथो अत्थे अनत्थे च, उभयस्स होति कोविदो।
Durāsado duppasaho, gambhīro duppadhaṁsiyo; Atho atthe anatthe ca, ubhayassa hoti kovido.
They’re intimidating, hard to defeat, deep, and hard to crush. They’re expert in both what the meaning is and what it isn’t.
अनत्थं परिवज्जेति, अत्थं गण्हाति पण्डितो; अत्थाभिसमया धीरो, पण्डितोति पवुच्चती”ति।
Anatthaṁ parivajjeti, atthaṁ gaṇhāti paṇḍito; Atthābhisamayā dhīro, paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.
Rejecting what is not the meaning, an astute person grasps the meaning. A wise one, comprehending the meaning, is said to be astute.”
