Bad Principles (1st)
“अधम्मो च, भिक्खवे, वेदितब्बो अनत्थो च; धम्मो च वेदितब्बो अत्थो च। अधम्मञ्च विदित्वा अनत्थञ्च, धम्मञ्च विदित्वा अत्थञ्च यथा धम्मो यथा अत्थो तथा पटिपज्जितब्बं।
“Adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo anattho ca; dhammo ca veditabbo attho ca. Adhammañca viditvā anatthañca, dhammañca viditvā atthañca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paṭipajjitabbaṁ.
“Bhikkhus, you should know bad principles with bad results. And you should know good principles with good results. Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good principles with good results.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, अधम्मो च अनत्थो च? मिच्छादिट्ठि, मिच्छासङ्कप्पो, मिच्छावाचा, मिच्छाकम्मन्तो, मिच्छाआजीवो, मिच्छावायामो, मिच्छासति, मिच्छासमाधि, मिच्छाञाणं, मिच्छाविमुत्ति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अधम्मो च अनत्थो च।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, adhammo ca anattho ca? Micchādiṭṭhi, micchāsaṅkappo, micchāvācā, micchākammanto, micchāājīvo, micchāvāyāmo, micchāsati, micchāsamādhi, micchāñāṇaṁ, micchāvimutti—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhammo ca anattho ca.
And what are bad principles with bad results? Wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong immersion, wrong knowledge, and wrong freedom. These are called bad principles with bad results.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, धम्मो च अत्थो च? सम्मादिट्ठि, सम्मासङ्कप्पो, सम्मावाचा, सम्माकम्मन्तो, सम्माआजीवो, सम्मावायामो, सम्मासति, सम्मासमाधि, सम्माञाणं, सम्माविमुत्ति—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, धम्मो च अत्थो च।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, dhammo ca attho ca? Sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi, sammāñāṇaṁ, sammāvimutti—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dhammo ca attho ca.
And what are good principles with good results? Right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right immersion, right knowledge, and right freedom. These are called good principles with good results.
‘अधम्मो च, भिक्खवे, वेदितब्बो अनत्थो च; धम्मो च वेदितब्बो अत्थो च। अधम्मञ्च विदित्वा अनत्थञ्च, धम्मञ्च विदित्वा अत्थञ्च यथा धम्मो यथा अत्थो तथा पटिपज्जितब्बन्ऽति, इति यं तं वुत्तं, इदमेतं पटिच्च वुत्तन्”ति।
‘Adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo anattho ca; dhammo ca veditabbo attho ca. Adhammañca viditvā anatthañca, dhammañca viditvā atthañca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paṭipajjitabban’ti, iti yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ, idametaṁ paṭicca vuttan”ti.
‘You should know bad principles with bad results. And you should know good principles with good results. Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good principles with good results.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.”
