Worthy of Offerings Dedicated to the Gods (1st)
“अट्ठहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो होति पाहुनेय्यो दक्खिणेय्यो अञ्जलिकरणीयो अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्स। कतमेहि अट्ठहि?
“Aṭṭhahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa. Katamehi aṭṭhahi?
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What eight?
इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सीलवा होति …पे… समादाय सिक्खति सिक्खापदेसु;
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu;
It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
बहुस्सुतो होति …पे… दिट्ठिया सुप्पटिविद्धा;
bahussuto hoti …pe… diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā;
They’re learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
कल्याणमित्तो होति कल्याणसहायो कल्याणसम्पवङ्को;
kalyāṇamitto hoti kalyāṇasahāyo kalyāṇasampavaṅko;
They have good friends, companions, and associates.
सम्मादिट्ठिको होति, सम्मादस्सनेन समन्नागतो;
sammādiṭṭhiko hoti, sammādassanena samannāgato;
They have right view, possessing right perspective.
चतुन्नं झानानं आभिचेतसिकानं दिट्ठधम्मसुखविहारानं निकामलाभी होति अकिच्छलाभी अकसिरलाभी;
catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhī hoti akicchalābhī akasiralābhī;
They get the four jhānas—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
अनेकविहितं पुब्बेनिवासं अनुस्सरति, सेय्यथिदं—एकम्पि जातिं द्वेपि जातियो …पे… इति साकारं सौद्देसं अनेकविहितं पुब्बेनिवासं अनुस्सरति;
anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati, seyyathidaṁ—ekampi jātiṁ dvepi jātiyo …pe… iti sākāraṁ sauddesaṁ anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati;
They recollect many kinds of past lives, with features and details.
दिब्बेन चक्खुना विसुद्धेन अतिक्कन्तमानुसकेन …पे… यथाकम्मूपगे सत्ते पजानाति;
dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena …pe… yathākammūpage satte pajānāti;
With clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, they see how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.
आसवानं खया …पे… सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरति।
āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.
They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो होति …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्सा”ति।
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā”ti.
A bhikkhu with these eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.”
